Neo Twewy actually does that.
If you combo an enemy for long, they eventually break out with an attack of their own. This revenge value can be reset through status ailments and other attacks so its not random either.
That's not the same thing, revenge value is a gimmick where you just trial and error memorize what string will do the most damage without triggering them. You're not adjusting your combo on the fly, just stopping when you know to.
this is a mod,not the original game
[...]
because it would punish people that mastered how to combo in these games, the reward for dominating the combat is watching how you destroy a single enemy in mid air, what you propose would be anti fun.
Landing one attack leading to a 15 second risk free guaranteed combo isn't exactly engaging, sempai. You might enjoy turning your brain off but we do not.

Well, revenge value in NEO TWEWY actually had a visual cue to when you are about to trigger its retaliation so I would say the perfect it in this game
i think a kingdom hearts super boss has something like this, but not normal enemies
Neo Twewy actually does that.
If you combo an enemy for long, they eventually break out with an attack of their own. This revenge value can be reset through status ailments and other attacks so its not random either.
Transformers Devastation gives nearly every enemy & boss the same defensive options as the player even when they're being attacked, so they will sometimes dodge or parry you and you have to adjust for that; Sideswipe's flash step lets him instantly keep up offense after an enemy dodge just feels good even though I prefer Optimus & Grimlock.
Bayo 1 and 2, 3 was a mistake
DMC3/4/5 are extremely fun too
Truth be told, all action games are great and you should enjoy them all equally
I will never be this good but at least I can pure platinum normal. Except Bayo 1, I can only platinum normal and I can't beat angel slayer or the hardest witch trial in 2 and 3.
It's a skill issue. I've accepted it. Doesn't mean I can't have fun and I'm no slouch but I've always struggled with technical controls like fighting games and can feel a hard limit that I can't surpass. It took me about 50-60 hours just to start to get witch time down.
I completely agree. 1>O>3>2 but 2 is still a very good game on its own merits, just weaker than the other entries. 2 for a while was the most aesthetically pleasing Bayo game but Origins is gorgeous so it's kind of 2nd-best at best in every category except music.
2 is just 1 but worse, 3 is flawed but does enough good unique stuff to make it worth playing, plus the game makes yuritrannies seethe which is an automatic bonus.
Balder & Rodin are pretty fun but they're locked to Tag Climax which is just not very interesting after a couple runs because of it being competitive instead of cooperative and the many TC-exclusive encounters being locked to that as well. Viola feels incomplete not in terms of being unfinished but in terms of her not having enough moves to flesh out all the ideas they tried to cram into her, but I DO like the idea there is with her, if only because she's the first time I've seen a character feel inspired by DMC4SE Trish in some capacity.
>2 is just 1 but worse
And 3 might as well not be a Bayonetta game, both gameplay-wise and story-wise
Demon Slave is a braindead mechanic, Viola is the worst character in the whole genre (yes, worse than 4Nero and V), the green toothpaste enemies are terrible, and the story is terrible even for Bayonetta standards
Do people hate V? He's such a bizarre character who just kinda goes nowhere that it's like having an opinion on DMC4 Gloria beyond looks.

Nah, I'm talking about gameplay
I love V, but his playstyle sucks donkey balls

V's the literal embodiment of "you can have the coolest concept ever but execution matters"
He's been so badly executed conceptually that it wasted the potential he had. Even the top tier players just spam a specific move and run around with very little engagement. The mains issue with him is a lack of direct control, which makes him feel like a passenger in his own gameplay style. It's completely absurd
>Demon Slave is a braindead mechanic
Demon Slave is a very open-ended mechanic that feels braindead because they don't make you ration Magic nor make the scoring system encourage Bayo & Demons attacking in tandem because they want the spectacle of Bayo dancing in the foreground as a giant demon fights more than they want the actual potential of the mechanic to be utilized. People give UC from 2 a little too much shit when it can be used very strategically, but Demon Slave has WAY more variety and potential uses in offense and defense than UC ever did. >Viola is the worst character in the entire genre
When her parry windows were fricked up, I might've agreed just because they made her not function properly but now no. >worse than 4Nero and V
4Nero I get, since 4Nero was half-done but all the enemies were designed around what he had while Viola has to deal with enemies designed for Bayo. V is good though, he really only needed one more close-range attacking option even if it wasn't strong. >the green toothpaste enemies are terrible
Visually yes, they're dull. In terms of patterns they're no worse than 2's new enemies, and I'd say 3's boss fights are on average the best in the trilogy (Strider doing most of the heavy lifting). >the story is terrible even for Bayonetta standards
100% but it's something that only really affects a first playthrough and isn't THAT important in this genre even if a decent or good story is appreciated.

>100% but it's something that only really affects a first playthrough and isn't THAT important in this genre even if a decent or good story is appreciated.
It's a little important. People remember the cool character shit from DMC3 pretty fondly.
But the best Bayo story is still a D- grade (and is a pain in the ass to skip) so getting an F barely matters.

How come no character action game has implemented directional influence or air teching where you have to react to what they do while you combo them?
because it would punish people that mastered how to combo in these games, the reward for dominating the combat is watching how you destroy a single enemy in mid air, what you propose would be anti fun.
Eight years in you can progress onto a new level, you have to go to a village in the form of a menu and talk to the most characters to move on. The menu screens are pretty decent, and do a good job of not being to cluttered, and the temple hubs are pretty fun to explore and dick around in when you want to escape from the action. The Village part of the game is just a pain in the ass however. I swear, these characters don't even move the plot along, they just tell you to go to the next level. The graphics are both artistically different and technically higher than previous console iterations of Sonic games. The artistic level in Sonic Unleashed is similar to that of Pixar’s latest films such as Ratatouille, which if you always thought Sonic would look better in, this is definitely an answer to your desires, though some such as myself might miss the more realistic setting. The 360 and PS3 versions have fully-fleshed out hub villages that are more comprehensive than the Wii version which just has a menu. I'm sure the hub villages are fun to dick around in, but the agonizing conversations with terribly designed npcs probably still exist! But then you add things like... uh, a werewolf. Wow. It sounds ridiculous, but you'll forgive it if the other half of the game is awesome, right? Sure, except you can't.
>Real shame the genre is dead.
Huh? DMC5 & Bayo 3 were both sales successes relative to their series, Hi-Fi Rush just came out this year, and we see a solid 3D indie or AA action game every year or so. I thought Evil West & En Garde were pretty damn solid. Astral Chain also did well and will get a sequel on the Switch 2 more than likely but I wasn't a big fan of that game myself.
I love Bayonetta but not really for that reason. I love the "scramble" feeling the combat has. While I appreciate combo creation as well as make my own, the thrill of the next hit is why I like Bayonetta's combat. The game should not be played on anything below NSIC but that's just my opinion.
This is why DMC3 is so good. Even the bigger enemies aren't so huge that this becomes an issue. Kamiya's dumb ass never learned this from DMC1 and Bayo has frickhuge enemies just for the wow factor.
Alright then you fricking action game nerds. Whats the best game to play if i dont like comboing enemies in the air for 10 hours and want a "quick" style combat where both me and my opponents die in a few hits.
That's technically true but DMC and Bayonetta were designed with combo autism in mind.
Playing either of them without combo autism is like only doing the main story missions in San Andreas.
I wish Suda actually focused more on the gameplay aspect instead of going all out with 'muh style over substance' in every game. KiD is one of his masterpieces and also the most forgotten one because of this. What a waste of potential.
Bayonetta, I love action games and to this day haven't played something better than it. I thought 2 was okay, 3 was good. Love DMC, Ninja Gaiden, but Bayonetta is perfect. I love every single thing about that game.
For me it's Bayo 2. I love 1, but I'm not a combo autist so stuff like the game looking better, the story, the new weapons and the demons as enemies are what edges it out for me.
DMC is also fantastic. My favorite being 5 simply because I love Nero and V.
I don't like NG. Good, complex gameplay. Poor everything else.
It's a tough question because each of the big names all have something they're great at or that they've introduced, and each series has dropped the ball at one point or another.
I hate to sound like an indecisive b***h but I feel like the genre is best enjoyed as a whole. That said I really feel like DMC4SE has been the absolute peak of combat, HOWEVER the adventure is so shit it actually brings the entire game back down to we're at square one again.
All the hours you spend jerking yourself off in these games you could just pick up a competitive/fighting game. The genre is dead because they are all time wasters. Most normal people are fine with just eating candy and jerking off.
Nah souls used to be a simple but engaging combat system. 1s still the best, for that unique methodical approach.
Elden Ring really wrecked the formula though, what a disaster. MHW blows that outta the water, aside from how long monsters take. I'd take that over whatever the frick rise was tho. ADHD simulator wearing MHWs skin
MHW is casual garbage, they made the monsters slower compared to previous games while making the hunter faster, stronger and with a lot of tools to trivialize fights like Mantles/Claw/H. Augment/Easy Healing, at the very least Rise actually buffed most monsters to be able to deal with the stronger hunter and made most fights actually worth fighting in endgame unlike World where you either fight Fatalis, Alatreon, Raging Brachy, AT Velk and the Rajangs while the rest of the roster is boring easy
Dude Elden Ring isn't hard. It alot easier to do a SL1 with all the broken spells. But Elden Ring is designed like shit. Or are you gonna sit here and defend Godfroy the Pasted?
How do I get into Nioh? I bought the second game a while ago but got bored and went back to NG and other action games
I've heard that the combat system is actually pretty complex, but it just feels like Ninja Gaiden but 10x worse to me
The Nioh-likes are about the gear and NG+, they take the "first playthrough is a tutorial" ideology of a lot of snappier and shorter action games and attach them to lengthy RPGs with Diablo loot that happen to keep the level-based format. You CAN do crazy shit, but it's mostly endgame/postgame/NG+/DLC that you get there, and the idea is that you're building these crazy equipment sets with tons of fine tuning.
If you want a game that's more fast-paced from the get-go then Stranger of Paradise might actually be better for you, the incorporation of the FF Job System gives it snappier combos earlier on (you can dash cancel any action that costs MP using the Job Switch button).
Anyway I'm making a rather odd game, hack and slash. Kinda a weird mix of KH1(general level design and slower comba), MHW(The weight and impact of larger weapons like Hammer, love that shit) with a tint of Bloodborne aggression principles.
Any tips, or pitfalls I should keep in mind? I got a few things I'm keeping an eye out for already (I want actually dangerous enemies, avoiding absurd move bloat, ensuring enemies have counters to juggling, etc
What happened to this genre? Everything nowadays is watered down perfect dodging hot garbage with no depth. Did Nier Automata really kill this genre? DMC5 came out and NO ONE went "Holy shit, we have to get back to making stylish action games!!!!" it's just came and went. Now Vergil is a zoomer meme.
Yep, I'm pretty sick of it. I want just a cool cool game.
Instead we have hyper zoomer shit as deep as a puddle.
And it's not even unique. I could take a fairly shallow game if it had some bloody soul and something unique about it.
If I knew how to gamedev I could make an action games on par with the greatest action games ever because literally no one else is trying because they don't even have to try since Black folk consume anything nowdays
And the sad part is my super technical action game would sell maybe 1000 copies while no depth no skill braingame mash and perfect dodge sells Billions 🙁
Well that's what I'm doing, I'm literally making a hack and slash just because no one else is really trying to make the sort of shit I want.
Though tbh, I think your game would do well, just market it properly. I can see the "Zoom zoom button mash" fatigue and it's really show with shit like Souls games.
People want some old school stuff now. Also, you could learn bro. Idk, ask around for advice. People would happily give some.
Bayo 1 and 2, 3 was a mistake
DMC3/4/5 are extremely fun too
Truth be told, all action games are great and you should enjoy them all equally

the only game that lets you both HACK and SLASH
ngb still hasnt been topped
Ninja Gaiden and it's not even close. Bayonetta and DMC are meme franchises.
is that why ninja gaiden is the only one that hasn't had a decent new game in more than a decade and the main man behind it is making NFT games?
maybe not THE best, but ninja gaiden 2 is my favorite
ng2's combat is kinda flawed, but i love how fricking absurd it is, no other game has come close to this level of insanity on screen
this is a mod,not the original game

It depends on what you're looking for. Not sure how you'd measure the "best"
god of war 3
Ninja gaiden of course, the other two don't compete in terms of enemy design.
Is it wrong if DMC 3 is my favorite, but I genuinely enjoy the combat in NG 2 more?
God Hand

>Bayo 1
>NGB
>NG2
>DMC5
A tier is pretty much everything else you can think of
>Bayo 2
>Bayo 3
>DMC4
>MGR
>Razor's Edge (yes homosexual it has good gameplay)
>Wonderful 101
Real shame the genre is dead.
>DMC 1 above 3
Genuinely curious why?
Grenade rolling and everything blowing up is way more kino than pins and needle combos.
That wasn't a descending "this game is better" list. S tier and A tier are just all there together.
No it was descending "this game is better" list. Stop pretending to be me. DMC1 is just better.
Onimusha
Sekiro
old gow
samurai western (underground kino)

Infinite Climax isn't fun because it takes away witch time.
i feel bad for you and ill never understand that absolute seethe and hate that game gets here sometimes
DMC3 and NGB are my God Tiers. The other good DMCs and Ninja Gaidens are Great. Never liked Bayonetta, not even 1.
God of War 2
Why do these games have complete ass giant bosses?
its like they are always inferior to the humanoid ones

combo autism is optional for all of these games

No they weren't. That's just flashy shit for brainlets who don't know how to cheese the game properly.
For me, it's Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition.
DMC for combos, NG for difficulty (everything after NG1 is just musou shit) and Bayo if you're a w*man.
Kingdom hearts
I wish Suda actually focused more on the gameplay aspect instead of going all out with 'muh style over substance' in every game. KiD is one of his masterpieces and also the most forgotten one because of this. What a waste of potential.
I wish Killer Is Dead and Metal Gear Rising would receive a proper remaster for PS5. Bundle them together and call it the "Double Edge Collection".
all that game needs is a slightly longer movelist and it would be amazing
Bayonetta, I love action games and to this day haven't played something better than it. I thought 2 was okay, 3 was good. Love DMC, Ninja Gaiden, but Bayonetta is perfect. I love every single thing about that game.
bayonetta cause i got a femdom fetish
dmc3 for the gameplay
Why is this genre so fast? I'm having difficulty keeping up with what's on screen when I play Bayonetta.

you tell me anon
Yeah frick that. I just use Rodin's version of durga.
>EAAAAAAAAGGHHH

Astral Chain you moronic basic b***hes.
Transformers Devastation, I have more time in it than any other action game. My reasoning? It's the one I find the most fun.
All the hours you spend jerking yourself off in these games you could just pick up a competitive/fighting game. The genre is dead because they are all time wasters. Most normal people are fine with just eating candy and jerking off.
Most of their games fall into A or S tier. They've all got some lame ones. Bayo 2 is maybe a B-, DMC2 is a C, Razor's Edge is a fricking D.
But good times all around.
modern UI design is so bland, look at that wacky healthbar
holy kino elemino.
Elden Ring
Link related. Vid of me defeating the hardest boss at RL1.
I still think Souls is just MonHun without the fun.

Diablo
What I wouldn't give for a character action game with good platforming.
>THE best hack and slash game
Diablo 2 and Path of Exile
but I personally prefer Lost Ark
Dunno why you posted action games in the OP pic if you're asking for Hack & Slash reccs
i literaly just bought DMC4 like 3 days ago and i havent played a devil may cry game since my PS2 days, what am i in for?
"billions must die, jack"
kingdom hearts 3 unironically. Especially the data battles.
Data battles are kino but most of the game is hot garbage.
For me its KH3 and KH2 for the best humanoid bosses and Monster Hunter series in general for the best creature/big boss fights
Hey any tips on making a hack and slash. Anything to avoid, anything mechanics to keep in mind or explore?

And the sad part is my super technical action game would sell maybe 1000 copies while no depth no skill braingame mash and perfect dodge sells Billions 🙁
Well that's what I'm doing, I'm literally making a hack and slash just because no one else is really trying to make the sort of shit I want.
Though tbh, I think your game would do well, just market it properly. I can see the "Zoom zoom button mash" fatigue and it's really show with shit like Souls games.
People want some old school stuff now. Also, you could learn bro. Idk, ask around for advice. People would happily give some.
I blame souls games, they normalized brainless gameplay that focus too much on easy dodges instead of interesting offensive options
