Found the PC-88/PCE/Saturn gay. Your kind will never be taken seriously on this board. Keep reporting those posts!

I sold all my PCE stuff and the only Saturn I ever had was a Goodwill find which I also sold. PS2 just looks real bad.

He's right you know. Easily the worst aesthetic of 6th gen.

Is it actually changing colors? Because if not, my opinion isn't changing, and most of my experience is with hardware anyway.

Speaking of SSX and PCSX2, the snow in Tricky looks strangely dim/grey in PCSX2 compared to real hardware or Dolphin.
            Real PS2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2yjLWbKnwI&t=1m58s
            PCSX2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=houLzs9M7CI&t=2m52s
Compare the color of the snow between videos. Also note how the colors of the snow in the level and the snow in the skybox match on real hardware, but not on PCSX2.
I chose that specific PCSX2 video since it shows the level intro, but here's a couple more recent PCSX2 videos, showing that the bug is still there:

I think this effects SSX 1 as well, but I can't be bothered to check.

lighting is broken in emulation. No surprise, emulation sucks and always will.

Here's a video comparing PCSX2 and Dolphin. The uploader doesn't specify, but I have no reason to believe either are real hardware.

this, so much shit is broken in pcsx2 people think all PS2 games look like gta.

Check out the comments on this video. While a few recognize that it's PCSX2 causing the issue, and more at least recognize that there's something wrong with the PS2 video, others sadly don't, and believe the GameCube version to be better looking, thanks to PCSX2's dim snow. As far as I can remember, the in-game graphics are pretty much the same between PS2 and GC, though PS2 has higher quality textures in the character select menu.

Emulation has unfortunately been coloring the perception of games for a long time. PS2 games on a CRT, 480i with decent cables really does look incredible. One of the things 480i seems to be good for is softening edges of things like ui elements and it looks great.

PS2 looks fantastic on a CRT, no doubt

Sony of Japan noticed the development of SSX 1 (then for the Dreamcast) and liked what they saw so much that they gave the Canadian dev team PS2 dev kits before the system was even out in Japan. Plus, Famitsu gave SSX 1 a gold rating and 32/40, which is the highest they've ever given an EA game (at least at the time). Tricky ended up getting a 32 as well. Gaijin game, maybe, but not filthy. You can even play as Kaori if you can't stand playing a game that doesn't have Japanese little girls.

I agree with this, but also the reason the Silent Hill games were able to make such good use of the hardware was that they're all in super dark settings which allows the draw distance to be extremely short

Yes , it's the PS2 version , somehow Shiny Entertainment manage to do normal mapping on PS2 , other games did the same on some parts like Hitman Blood Money and Champions of Norrath

True Crime - Streets of New York looks very impressive for its age. You would be forgiven for thinking it was a 360 game.

True Crime was really ahead of the competition graphics wise, if only they had been better games

Thankfully their successor studio learned with Sleeping Dogs, the original release looked like a next gen game, even better than the re-release. It was also an enjoyable game, and obviously took a few pages from Yakuza.

True Crime Streets of LA had a map 18 times bigger than fricking GTA San Andreas

FF12 was a technical marvel on PS2 , some tremendous texture work and lots attention to detail

FF12 is really dull, the faces look funny, and every zone looks the same. X was a much nicer looking game.

Relevant, is the PS2's emotion engine the reason why PC ports of these games almost always look worse? What was so special about it that made porting these effects so hard?

      Anonymous

That's probably part of it, EE was used for rendering certain effects very efficiently. Obviously rendering on CPU was frowned upon for other platforms, but PS2 had a CPU purpose built for it, giving it an edge over even the xbox. This usually meant ports had to rely on fixed function alternatives which can look decidedly less impressive and unique.

Xbox/PC ports were running on architecture that didn't work the same way; they couldn't replicate the particle and post-processing effects.
Not new, PC ports of N64 games would have less colors, lighting effects, and whatnot.
