I loved the 2nd and third one but the first one is the best. Also the third that let you buy all sorts of accessories and resize/place them wherever you want on your character was one of the best features I've seen on a character customization scene

They walk like that cuz the boss uses them when there are no women around. It's unironically, factually, historically not gay to pound your homies bussy if you're a samurai and I wish I were making this up. Women were just for breeding, while true love can only be shared by warriors

Always wanted to play these but I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes of the first game. I don't remember why, I think I just got into fights and got rek'd

The first game is actually pretty unforgiving, all your stat growth and learned moves are tied to the swords you use which disappear forever after death, and save scumming doesn't work because once you start a game with a sword it autosaves and can't be used again until you survive that playthrough. I found that to be the worst feature of the game, which was removed afterward.

Yeah I remember getting almost all of the endings, but when I tried to replay it, it was just too difficult.
I had ended up grinding to enhance a really good sword, only to play like ass when trying to rescue Don -- being too prideful to just run away and end the playthrough there -- and got killed and lost all the progress on that sword.

In some ways It's interesting though, since for a decent chunk of encounters you can either give up and beg for forgiveness, or you can just flat out run away. If you've fricked up too much, just run away, try and exit the village, and at least save your sword to use on another playthrough.

First one, Way of the Samurai. Playstation 2. Got English releases in both NTSC and PAL regions. Alternatively there's a PSP port that was Japan only, but someone managed to hack in the PS2 translation:

I was thinking about this game the other day, how is it?

In terms of the story and the general samurai vibe, the first one is the best one. Sequel goes a bit too, ehh, "anime-ish" and feels like an episode of Naruto or something, with lots of outlandish characters. WotS2 also adds a shitty map/time management mechanic, but it improves the fighting engine from the first game quite a bit with added styles, weapon types, counters etc. Both can be enjoyed though. I think Way of the Samurai with an updated fighting system from the sequel would be the perfect game. Not that the fighting system in the first one sucks, it's just that it's hard to go back after you played the second one. I'd play both games if I were you, but I'd start with the original release. The newer installments are super mediocre, with lots of "hahaha pantsu xD" type quirky Japanese humour that overstays its welcome and (IMHO) lame stories. Cursed series that started amazing, but with each step forward it takes two steps back.

TL:DR - at least play Way of the Samurai.

Fun fact: both the NTSC and PAL releases of the original game run at the same speed (PAL supports 60hz) and they're identical games other than... the cheat codes. There's some extra costumes that can be unlocked using cheats only and they're different between the two versions. Dunno why.

Is there ANY way to beat this guy at the beginning of the game??? The combat is so fricking wonky and I suck ass at it so I keep getting my shit kicked in. Never played it before btw and I assume you can either walk away or the whole tied-to-the-train-tracks scenario is unavoidable and part of the game.

Yeah but you can't kill him yet, if you win he will ask you to join them. You can heal by kicking radishes and mushrooms into your mouth.
