All home consoles pretty much died at the same time during 8th gen, the sole reason that the PS4 seemed to cling to life was that consoomers flocked to them. Even Nintendo is really only in the handheld market.
The previous gen already started implementing a lot of the modern problems and Microsoft had already entered the market, albeit in the Embrace stage, rather than the Extend stage of the 360.

People say the PS3 but I think it was when GTA3 came out for the PS2 and changed the landscape of video games forever. Budgets ballooned and soul was replaced for profit maximizing. The PS2 was still a great system with a shitton of good games, but you could see the shift as the years went on and it became closer to 2006
It's sad because Sony do Japanese games better than Nintendo and I'm still salty that I have to go to Nintendo for my game fix now since their platforms just don't harbor the same energy for me outside of Warioeare, Wario Land, Rhythm Heaven and a few other small games
Nintendo took over the weeb market. Now snoy relies on shitty movie games to sell its consoles. So nobody buys them. And because nobody buys them, nobody develops games for them. And unlike nintendo, playstation does not have good IP to fall back on and develop their own games for to sell the console and kickstart a virtuous cycle.
Which is sad because Nintendo are family oriented, Sega and Sony were always better for Japanese games that weren't targeted primarily at kids first and then older players after. Now I'm mostly playing 3rd party games and the occasional Nintendo game
Slowly but surely I think nintendo is chilling out. There is some pretty adult themed stuff on the switch store. This all goes back to the fricking 80s when nintendo legitimately was being threatened by politicians to be banned. I think they are slowly starting to come around to the idea that the west is a pozzed culturaly degraded shithole and nobody gives a frick. And also parental controls exist now so there is no reason to make blood purple or whatever moronic shit they used to do.

Ps had a nice sweet spot because of third party relationships. Sony has never given much to gaming besides load times.
