Yeah, they really didn't do a good enough job to convey "No, you fricking stay out of this." It didn't help that the quest was written before Rifthounds actually existed in the game. You'll actually find them north of that arena now.

Long story short, Mihoyo wanted to give the players a second weekly boss at launch, but didn't have enough time to make a whole questline about it like they did for Dvalin.

Only certain parts of the story are actually any good. The rest is just endless endless endless filler casual conversation you can't skip.

For every dramatic part where Fontaine is saved, or Fischl confronts her inner edginess, or Albedo is a clone but also a flower wait no he's the real one maybe or is he the evil clone dunnolol, you have about 20 hours of wordswordswordswords. No, I don't care if Paimon is hungry and there's poorly-translated joke and oh look it's Mona who is on vacation here and she's met Navia and they're talking about food again, I want the actual stories.

The story still doesn't really make me care that much about the Traveler's sibling. Like I can sympathize with their desire to reunite with their sibling, but they appear so sporadically and do so little that I just find myself completely disinterested in them.

Like if you're playing as Aether, Lumine is a complete non-character. Utterly lacking in charm, charisma or any real depth. If you're playing as Lumine, then it's Aether. They're thoroughly uninteresting and I just don't really give a shit about them or their goals.

        Anonymous

The Traveler's main goal is to reunite with their sibling, this much is true. But the game places infinitely more emphasis and care into fleshing out the regions and their Archons. Pick any given Archon and they have a thousand times the characterization that the Prince(ss) of the Abyss Order does.

And I'm not saying that the Traveler's goal isn't important on a technical level. But to be frank, I'm looking forward more to meeting the Pyro Archon than I am towards seeing the sibling again, because after like four Dainsleif quests, the sibling still hasn't given me a single reason to actually have any interest in them.

Okay, so you know how some games expect you to care about a character just because the main character cares about them? Like Ethan's wife in Resident Evil 7 for instance. She's his wife so OF COURSE she's his number one priority, but I'm not Ethan. I don't really like her that much. I sympathize with Ethan of course, but I don't really have the same attachment he does.

Same deal with Genshin. I sympathize with the Traveler, but I don't care nearly as much about the sibling as they do.

I never bought this excuse. What's more complex about reusing old events compared to making new ones?

          Anonymous

I don't mean complex to do them, but complex to design the game around them. The events that most people want reruns for are the events that were important to the story, but Mihoyo has been consistent in having the story make sense and be played in order instead of being a disjointed mess like a lot of other gachas are. The events people want to be rerun had to be played at a certain point in the story and don't make sense if played later; rerunning them now would make no sense story-wise. For example the first Scaramouche event made sense because it was before Inazuma was released, if you release it today the whole thing makes zero sense.

      Let's try.

Quest: "The Lost Melodies of the Past"

      Location: Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, Liyue

Character: Xingqiu, the Hydro Appointed Priest

Target Character: Zhongli, the Geo Archon

      Dialogue:

(Xingqiu approaches Zhongli, who is sitting in contemplation at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor)

Xingqiu: (bowing) Honorable Archon Zhongli, I've come to ask for your guidance. I've been searching for a way to uncover the secrets of the ancient melodies that once resonated through these lands.

Zhongli: (looking up) Ah, Xingqiu. Your dedication to the Way of Wangsheng is admirable. What makes you think you can uncover these secrets?

Xingqiu: I've heard whispers of an ancient score hidden within the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor's archives. It's said to hold the key to understanding the forgotten melodies that once harmonized with the land itself.

Zhongli: (skeptical) The Wangsheng's archives are vast and complex. Even I, as an Archon, have not delved into their depths. What makes you think you can succeed where others have failed?

Xingqiu: As a priest of Wangsheng, I believe my connection to the land and its energies gives me a unique perspective. And I've discovered a few... clues that suggest this score might be hidden within a specific section of the archives.

Zhongli: (intrigued) Very well, Xingqiu. I'll grant you permission to search the archives, but be warned: the secrets within are not for the faint of heart. Are you prepared to face what lies within?

Xingqiu: (determined) I am prepared to face whatever challenges lie ahead. With your blessing, Archon Zhongli, I shall uncover the truth behind these lost melodies.

Zhongli: (nodding) Very well, Xingqiu. May your journey be fruitful. But remember, the secrets of the past are not always meant to be uncovered...

Wuwa has artificial synergy, the game could work perfectly fine with only one character so they had to tack on stupid mechanics that are only there to encourage you to switch character like the intro/outro skills. Genshin's combat is built around elemental reactions which inherently promotes switching character. You might prefer how an individual Wuwa character plays over and individual Genshin character, that's fine, but Genshin is inherently a team game, while Wuwa's combat is more like a regular single-character action game so they forced some gimmicks to justify having multiple characters (because it's a gacha game and gacha games require multiple characters). It's backward game design.

                Anonymous

The synergy in wuthering waves is on the character switch for damage, which is the same for Genshin.
It's a shame but Genshin doesn't really do anything with the element reactions aside from damage where movement is concerned.

If Mohoyo focused on this aspect, combat would turn into a 10/10, but they leave it be.

                Anonymous

You're arguing in bad faith and the things you say don't really make much sense. Or maybe it's a case of ESL.

Anyway, how would you fix the combat in genshin?

                Anonymous

The reactions need to be related to movement and attacking/defending. You want to capitalise on Breath of the Wild's reaction system and apply that to fast-paced action combat.

Zelda actually does it better than Genshin, with stuff like riding air currents and entering slow-mo from above.

If Genshin had mechanics like, pushing a frozen enemy across the floor to crash into other enemies, that would be killer.
Instead it's just pushing circle and swapping out characters for damage-based reactions, which isn't terrible, just not super engaging.

Something like Wuthering Waves doesn't need elemental stuff because the base movement is so good.

                Anonymous

                >Wuthering Waves doesn't need elemental stuff
then why even give characters an element then?

                Anonymous

To have an excuse to have multiple characters for different bosses and game modes, as well as capitalizing on what's familiar from Genshin.

                Anonymous

This is not real synergy, get real. And elemental reactions are not just for damage. You can freeze wet enemies or make an ice path over water, you can burn shieds made of wood and ice, etc. You can apply elements to enemies and they can apply elements to you but some enemies like slimes already have an element, both you and enemies can become affected from the environment like walking in water or walking on fire. The core system of Genshin is the elemental reactions and everything is made around that; the character switching justifies itself because the game simply does not work without it. Yes there are other elements to team-building like supports and stuff, but that's optional. The entire game could work without buffs and healing. But the game CANNOT WORK without letting the player use multiple elements to have different elemental reactions, and this was implemented through character switching.
The vast majority of action games do not have character switching because there is no reason to. In Genshin Impact, there is a reason; the elemental reactions.
Wuwa could work perfectly well without character switching, it does not have a core mechanic that requires character switching. It is a well-designed single-character action game, but its team building is a complete gimmick. Intro and outro skills are not a core mechanic, it's a gimmick, the game works perfectly fine without them. In fact the game works perfectly fine without character switching except for... puzzles that require a gunner.
You might prefer Wuwa's combat, I am not saying that it's bad. What I'm saying is that Genshin is built around elemental reactions which justifies having multiple characters, while Wuwa has a well-designed combat system that has a tacked-on character switch system because if you didn't you wouldn't roll for characters. The game was designed backward, starting with the end result and then figuring out how to get there.

Every gacha in regards to characters is built around contrivances, else why not just have Aether be able to swap between all elements ala Devil May Cry weapons or something.

Genshin's core problem is that even with all the reactions, shields and whatnot, the movement is so unrefined that it comes across as stunted.

Even comparing it to Zelda it falls behind, let alone character action games.

In my humblest of opinions, I personally think both games can co-exist peacefully. It's dumb you have to defend one gacha game because you're spending thousands of bucks on it. Fun fact, MHY and Kuro doesn't give a shit about you defending them; they only care about your wallet. Oh and no, they will never listen to feedback from a mouthbreather in 4chink.

Sort of, yes. Despite hiring VAs to do like 1-5 voice lines for the main character every patch they insisted on going with the unvoiced MC route for the game's main story, so Paimon also functions as your mouthpiece by speaking with and interacting with NPCs on your behalf

The only good part of Inazuma was the immediate start and even then Traveler gets gaslit into helping Ayaka and Ayato. As soon as you get past that part it completely fails on all fronts and the Story Quests had to damage control just to make it decent. Teppei as a character is handled so poorly you'd think a child wrote that entire part of the story.

Eula has started opening up to people, and while she's still got her hangups she's far more honest about what she means, especially if she's not in Mondo.
Mona's stopped acting like such a pauper and is a bit more responsible about her money than earlier. She still blows it all but she saves it for more important things.
Sucrose is less reserved and doesn't blurt out as much as she did near the start.
Collei is actively trying to learn how to read, has started to be less shy, and is actively going out of her shell to push past her insecurities and worries to be more like Amber.
Clorinde went from reserved to far more open and a bit goofy ever since the story moved past the apocalypse and Navia learned the truth of her father.
Yoimiya is mostly the same but she went from secret freedom fighter to more open about the world and wanting to experience more than just Inazuma.
Ayato is still super diplomatic and calculating but he's also gotten goofier and is actively chilling out more as he goes out of Inazuma.
Shenhe's gone from this murder monster who is unable to control her temper and reactions to things to working food service and being a part of Liyue which makes both Ganyu and bird mom happy.
Cloud Retainer has gone from believing humans were beneath her and her intellect to viewing them as equals and becoming a tourist mom who loves seeing new inventions.
Xiao has gone from this weird protector of humans who thinks he can't interact with them to constantly being pushed out of his comfort zone and accepting it rather than immediately teleporting away. He's also learned to accept John Lee more as his own person than view him as his god even if it's baby steps.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
