SMT V is the best monster RPG and that was a year and a half ago, so not that bad.
Monster Raising is a niche genre and people play Pokemon because of the brand itself, not because of the genre.

It has a different mentality in that the demons you recruit are not treated as friends (for the most part), and you don't raise them you craft them and then use them to fuse better ones (for the most part). Megami tensei is the original RPG were you recruit a party out of monsters though.
Some of the issue is that a lot of these games tried to be more competitive or balanced pokemon.
With real focus on thought or strategy put into the battles.
And I don't think anyone actually wants that.

People want to capture creatures, evolve them, and dick around. The people who want the Battle facilities and actual tough battles are a fairly small minority, so when games like TemTem cater to them it puts a lot of people off because it means now you need to metagame somewhat to get anywhere. I'm pretty sure people are okay with stuff like the 100 rounds in Pokemon Colosseum or the Battle Frontier where you don't need to care about your natures, IVs, or EVs at all, just your move setup, and the final fight in PLA, but when you start asking people to play a rigid way without their favorite designs it puts people off.
Obviously, people want some difficulty, it's why random trainer battles are always the first thing on everyone's list to buff, even for casual players, but there's a limit to how much most people care, and the more involved you get the less people care.

It always makes me laugh when people shill for hard Pokemon mods because they think giving every single trainer six Pokemon with perfect stats and movesets is the epitome of difficulty, instead of realizing how fricking tedious would that be in a mainline game if you have to fight that kind of trainer every 5 minutes. I just don't understand why they want to bring Smogonhomosexualry to an all-ages game.
I'm fine with normal trainers having 2-4 Pokemon as long as not every single one has 4 every single time and it's all over the place instead, but doing stuff like 1 Pokemon or 6 Magikarps is just stupid. That's what I meant by wanting trainers to be buffed. Gym leaders by default should always have 6 past the third gym, with the first having four, the second having five, and the third having sixth. It doesn't mean you need to give them max IV/EV comp ability movesets, just give them more to work with. Also, make the AI work because holy crap, Geeta's team makes no sense at all with how she sends them out.

She's supposed to be the "Top Champion" but Clavell, Arven, and Nemona are miles more difficult than her. I nearly whited out to Clavell.
Glimmora is Geeta's ace because it's the super special rare Pokemon only found in the inaccessible to everyone area, even if it was designed as an almost exclusively lead that does nothing but set spikes and die. Still, that doesn't excuse giving her fricking Gogoat as part of her team. So much for being La Primera, what a fricking fraud.
Yeah, but the thing is that they appear out in the wild outside of Area Zero not only in mass outbreaks but in several cave systems, and her leading with it and calling it her ace would be a completely reasonable way to show she has something special you potentially don't know how to counter.
