Something I learned working in design (graphic and product) is that everytime you think something is poorly done or wrong but has been done that way for mroe than one generation, 99% of the time it means that is indeed the best way to do it and any change will quickly showcase why.
The other 1% is that nobody ever bothered to look for an alternative but that's both more rare and mroe common than one expects (it's usually in places optimization/improvement wasn't an urgency)
