From best to worst:
Modded PC, Dreamcast, GameCube, PC
But whichever one you play, they're not all that much different. If you're having fun, great. If not, you won't enjoy the series no matter what and I'd recommend 2D games instead.
fpbp. Sonic Adventure DX on PC with the Dreamcast Restoration Project is the definitive way to play SA.
I don't know if SA2 has a comparable mod, but I'd be more surprised if it didn't. SA2 Battle wasn't nearly as bad of a port as SADX, so it isn't as necessary.
SA2 has some various Dreamcast fixes but there's no all in 1 converter yet.
The lighting/shadow system was better on DC for both. The DC version of SA2 had cool integrations with Seganet.
The expanded multiplayer in SA2:B was pointless because those modes always sucked anyway, so more of it wasn't really a bonus. The 'improved' Chao Garden was mostly just compensating for the lack of a VMU
for someone wanting to play it now the seganet integration is a downside. the whole thing is dead meaning the chao garden is effectively neutered, and even if it WAS alive both dreampis and DC ethernet adapters are expensive as frick. there are VMU chao editors though iirc, though i'm not sure how extensive they are.
The thing is, by definition the Dreamcast is the superior version of both games but only if you played the Dreamcast versions first.
People who grew up on DX and Battle wonder why people say their bad ports then you go back and play the Dreamcast version and you realize wow these GC games look/run like shit. Best way to play is to mod the PC versions of DX and Battle for all the content and the fixes
I'm gonna be honest, I've played both DC and GC and besides some graphic differences and minor glitches, it's the same thing, Sonic fans just be Sonic fans.

Do you not realize how much shit in the Gamecube version wasn't in the Dreamcast version? Chao didn't even colors in the original Sonic Adventure 2 (outside of a few special DLC chao). Colors and all of the breedable variants were exclusive to the Gamecube version.

Don't forget the portable chao garden support by linking a GBA to the Gamecube. It wasn't 1:1 comparable to the VMU Chao Adventure, but it still gave you the ability to take your chao out with you on the go and play minigames with it. You had to keep the system on if you didn't have a compatible game, but if you owned Sonic Advance 1 or 2 you can fully transport your chao to it and keep it saved there until you're ready to bring it back.
I think there were some exclusive fruits and eggs you could get from the gba garden too, but it took an egregious amount of grinding rings.
Of course none of this matters if you're playing the PC port.
>SA1 better on Dreamcast >SA2 better on Gamecube
The downgrade in graphics and controlls in SA1 doesn't compensate the extras the DX version brings while the opposite is true for SA2. The battle port is mostly the same with some minor differences you can barelly notice unless you have both games side by side and extra content.

The Gamecube versions have better content and a few QoL changes, especially for the Chao Garden. Some of the visual changes are controversial, like the new models and simplified lighting; you decide if that's a deal-breaker or not.
I normally wouldn't recommend playing anything past the Gamecube releases, but the PC ports do have some good mods if you're into that.
Yeah I'd say the Gamecube Chao garden is a pretty big plus
For basegame I think I prefer Dreamcast though
This is a fair point. If you have no interest in the Chao Garden at all, there's really no harm in sticking to the Dreamcast games. Personally I'm a sucker for the Garden, but it's not everyone's thing.

Where would the 360 and PS3 versions rank?
GameCube for all the content but as the other anon said, they're all basically the same game.
they're both shit
You will never be loved
your taste is awful
But I didn't buy Stupidstars and Origins
You didn't buy Adventure/Adventure 2 either, your mommy did

Yep pretty much
It is the same game
yeah and the Dreamcast versions were way better
You're just saying that because you grew up with them. Cope.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is excellent for additional content but it's predicated upon having other people to play with, which /vr/ doesn't.
It also makes a lot of additions to the Chao Garden, which is 70% of the game.

Your complaints are superficial

Good job making me open a dictionary to check whether my usage of "superficial" was correct. Frick you, it was.
