This. >reaching back for the triggers is very awkward >dpad being above the analogue means you completely have to stop moving your character in most games to use whatever's mapped to it
I'm having a hard time adapting to the dual sense because of these.
Lowering your thumb to reach the trigger and pushing it forward gives you a shorter trigger travel time. The Joystick connected onto the lower part of the Controller, meaning you can slide it up and down the Joystick to increase or decrease the trigger travel time. This eliminates the time you usually have to get your thumb off the controller while aiming or adjusting to your target.
Clawing is better with left stick below d-pad. But that's the only advantage. Left stick should be above the dpad unless you're playing a retro game or a game that absolutely requires that you claw
for shooters (western games) where you actually use the triggers as intended (none of this press and release square shit,) upper is better. for jrpgs where you are only occasionally readjusting the camera to get a better creepshot up your troon's skirt, bottom is better.
I prefer the top because so many games use the dpad for items these days that the claw grip becomes the best solution for changing items while still moving.
Bottom is more ergonomic. Even Cerny admitted that the only reason they keep the layout instead of the conventional Xbox layout that basically everybody else uses is because it's important to the brand.
That's why the most popular third party Playstation controllers are just clones that ape the 360/Xbone layout and market it as an "Pro" pad.
This isn't the SNES era, the left stick is universally more important that the D-pad, where it gets used for movement in basically everything, so it makes sense for it to be closer to the edge.
Both stick placements are fine and make no difference
BUT
Playing fighting games with an xbox d-pad legitimately gives me cramps due to its placement being further away.
It makes no sense to put the d-pad in the primary position for a controller you're going to be using mostly for 3d games.
And yes, it is irrefutably the primary position, that's where it's been since the OG PS1 controller when the d-pad was the only option. Symmetrical stick placement is a relic of tacking sticks on to a 2d pad design and they just never bothered to try to improve it
>It makes no sense to put the d-pad in the primary position for a controller you're going to be using mostly for 3d games.
Makes perfect sense when you consider that fighting games have some of the highest stress and rapid motion of any genre and playing them with the analog stick is fricking terrible. If you think having to move your thumb on the analog stick in that placement is an annoyance then imagine the torture of having to do constant flicking and circle motions as quickly as you can.
if the playstation consoles were exclusively for fighting games than that'd make perfect sense, but they aren't. there are controller designs that are much more specialized for that type of game anyways.
I use both and still prefer sonys layout, there's literally nothing wrong with it, most people that seem to prefer the xbox layout are the ones that used an Xbox 360 as their first console
going from lower to upper feels super weird
This.

Top, classic, if it ain't broken, why fix it?
you can use either one but the sony placement is only comfortable after you've been stockholm syndromed by it.
Ive used both, i still prefer sony placement for my big ogre hands.
I almost want to see that happen just for the dual coloring on the analog sticks.
Any official controllers that do this?

Fixed
What the frick is wrong with you
here fixed it for you. the one to please them all.

Xbox
the one that doesn't drift

whatever you prefer
the last thing controllers need is more homogenization

So the PlayStation layout is the correct one.
If I'm playing a game with digital inputs, top. Analog input, bottom.
This is still peak ergonomic design and it was scrapped because of a few malcontents. Hope everyones carpal tunnel was worth the memes
Comfy AF

best post itt
I was about to post how the SONY layout was a compromise for the PS1, and then they stuck to it for branding purposes since

I like the top version because it looks nicer.
Whatever you're used to
But I'im terms of practicality the top orientation allows you to claw both the face buttons and dpad and is therefore superior
What is wrong with mutt hands?

I sure hope you guys aren't manlets with handlets that have trouble reaching an analogue stick regardless of the controller layout
