    I don't see what the guy who made that image is driving at. I think he would have been better off with extreme examples like 'best graphics at launch vs best at the end of production'.
    Mild vs mild does not even show that there is a difference at all.

      This, the PS1 especially had games look massively different by the end. Posting a few different genres would illustrate it best. Toshinden vs Bloody Roar 2 or Tekken 3, Air Combat vs Ace Combat, Bubsy vs Terracon. These genres all developed significantly over the course of the console and there's examples for every one of those games to show how the hardware was better utilized and how games improved visually.

        In terms of gameplay NES is clear winner, early games were simple arcade ports that felt like they belong on Atari, but after the success of SMB games became far more complex

          NES games changed because of the success that Dragon Quest and then Final Fantasy had, a lot of developers started to add RPG mechanics in their games.

    Obviously newer consoles have a bigger difference due to way more processing power, like many games near the NES launch were already stressing the hardware.

          Regardless, Alex Kidd looks and plays closer to a Mater System game than what the system was capable of.

      Came here to say this. Genesis and NES games had the most drastic graphical improvements over the course of their run. It fricking blew my mind that Kirby's Adventure was a damn NES game.

    most people start with smb, which has strict 4 colour sprites, single colour backgrounds, minimal animation frames, small sprites, etc
    near the end of the NES all of that shit was overcome with smart programming trickery and devs were putting out incredible, lively looking games
    there's a mega man stage where the background is a shitload of different machinery and it's all animated. i'm still not sure how they managed that without the hardware exploding

      Easy. They used MMC3 which allows animated backgrounds since it can switch tile sets on the fly.

      SMB is actually very advanced compared to other black box titles, continuous scrolling alone is very impressive since most games had one or multiple screens

    Perfect Dark for the N64 was supposed be the last big game that pushed it to the limits before GC came out
