There wasnt really an "original direction" to begin with other than the elf girl's hairstyle, so i dont know what you even mean. Our world being the setting's version of fantasy is still a plot point, that hasn't changed.
I genuinely think that the character design in what we've seen of this game is the worst I've ever contemplated in a video game. It is absolutely horrendous.

They need to stop doing 2D anime cutscenes in these games. The only time they were good was in Persona 3 because they were directed well and reminiscent of experimental anime of the time like Boogiepop Phantom and Lain. All the other cutscenes in these games are boring and out of place. Atlus is in the position to make all of these pre-rendered 3D animations.
One is Soejima's artwork, the other is a cheap anime cutscene. And I still don't think these are the same character.
