I know it was compressed to shit but it is genuinely kinda impressive they fit what amounts to four hours of FMVs on a GBA cartridge

      It's incredibly impressive.
I'm personally surprised that nintendo didn't try video again after it. I mean, the gba mp3 player could play video, but that was Europe and Japan only. I believe the ds got some video player but again japan only. 3ds had some but never any way of loading your own. N3ds web browser had some video playback though which is neat.
But the ds was ripe for it and all they had to do was copy what they had in Japan for the US and they'd have been more competitive with the psp on multimedia.

nintendo didnt do these it was some random 3rd party company, and they made so much cash from these gameboy movies that they were able to convert their company into a full fledge publisher making original games, one of which was the canceled taxi driver video game

Yes but they allowed it. I would bet lots of money that someone tried to do some multimedia on the ds and they got shot down by N.

They bought some company for video compression on DS era.

Besides, licensing mp3 and video in general is can of worms, not mention fees on each console.

              Anonymous

If you're building it into the console then yes licensing is costly but they could've sold a media cart with an SD card slot and factored the licenses into the pricetag. But I suppose the ds was so overrun by flashcards as is that anyone that wanted video or mp3 already had it anyway.

Jesus I had the Cartoon Network one and it could barely work with an hour of hand drawn cartoons on it. How bad was it with two whole movies?

I know you are like 14 so you weren't around in the early 2000's but people really wanted a way to watch movies on the go. Few people had smart phones back then and the ones that did didn't have the ability to play movies at the time. Portable DVD players were expensive as all hell so thats why we got GameBoy Video and PSP UMD Movies

Nobody bought these and they died in less than a year. Still kept getting made but nobody would stock them cause nobody bought them.

I learned to pirate movies and to some extent games because of the PSP
finding a safe download for a game was a lot harder than finding a safe download of a movie so the games still sometimes got purchased legitimately but the UMD movies always made me chuckle

yeah there were so many pirate sites made for ps3 / psp, i remember one my friend at school told me where you could just download full movies in mp4 format or whatever one played on it, it was so easy i pirated so many movies that way

Man, im kind of nostalgic for this to be honest.
I used to think shit like this was fricking amazing. Why can't technology be quite as fun and cool anymore?

stuff like this was with no irony too ahead of its time for its own good, out of nowhere and the only reason none of this caught on is because sony tried to do too much at once with the PSP no matter how clunky it actually was and that's just what's included with the console, the thing was even a proto-nintendo switch if you bought the component cable attachment it's weird to think Sony were actually the closest thing to a japanese Apple at some point

Also, the fact is that it was objectively superior to competing stuff like VideoNow. It was legit good tech at the time.

GBA had several video modes that let it write to a frame buffer (e.g. it didnt have to be tile based like the 16-bit systems) and had a relatively decent ARM 32-bit processor that could calculate 3D in software.
