I am so very happy and relieved that its happening in October. Because SMTV comes out November, and this is the last smash direct, so that completely, totally, deconfirms the SMTV protagonist, and I could not be happier. It was my greatest fear. Now, I am entirely open to whatever its going to be, I think my next biggest fear is another pokemon.

It depends, when he comments about his supervisors requests it’s usually very vague ones. “A Pokémon from x/y”, “surely you can put Minecraft in smash”, “a Pokémon from sun/moon”, “a fighter from tekken”. They’re interested in selling the brand and trust Sakurai to not be a moron and ask for Panda or Cutiefly.
Well we don't know DLC pokemon (and hopefully none), but the base roster pokemon picks are all his personal tastes.

With Pokémon in particular I feel like there’s a contractual agreement that the roster must feature a Pokémon from the newest games in order to obtain the license. I doubt Nintendo feels the need to shill Pokémon like they do for series with potential (Xenoblade, FE, ARMS). That said I have a sneaking suspicion the final character is 1st party and it’s probably some splatoon character.
it's not contractual agreement, it's like Mario in that it's in the lifeblood of Smash. There's a reason those two are the only series in the first game with two reps. At least the entrants are all Sakurai's choice.

The only way it isn't going to be panned if it is a HUGE never-ever 3rd party and have a surprise DLC final fighter for free.
So either Sora, Fortnite Guy("Jonesy[?] Drops In"!) or Master Chief("Master Chief Finishes the Fight"!) and Waluigi as a surprise at the very end("Waluigi makes the Assist"! or "Waluigi is here to party"!). Moveset is based on Mario Spin Offs.
If its anything less it will be shite.
