    In the modern era?
Alpha Protocol would be cancelled before release by twitter mobs.
I imagine contemporary settings for modern games being less of a thing is because of muh escapism.

There's not a single thing in AP that's at all more daring or potentially offensive than modern games. Really masturbatory validation-seeking post.

        >portrayal of Muslims as terrorists
        >male gaze outfits for Scarlet and SIE
        >dyed hair Asian female (yes, really)
        >romancing co-workers, even if they are your superiors
        >protagonist is exclusively a straight white (or very tanned) male
        >female characters getting kidnapped and needing to get rescued
        >the whole end of the Rome arc
        >American imperialism undertones
All these elements are deemed offensive in 2021.

Earthbound is a contemporary 90s setting.
Pokémon, Digimon, YW, and a lot of the other monster catcher games take place in modern times.

Balancing other weapons around bullets is usually moronic, thus why not do a shooter - the designers, probably.
