1) Gale is hung up on another woman and doesn't flirt with the MC outside of romance scenes, doesn't tell MC she's better than other women etc... If Gale was a romance novel character he would immediately favor MC over Mystra.
2) Astarion is pathetic and weak and his story is about him being hung up on a man. To be a romance novel style character he'd need to be unironically like a twilight vampire, instead he eats rats and is pathetic.
3) Wyll is hung up on another woman, his noble status is kind of a perk but there's no path where you can become nobility as far as I'm aware of. If Wyll was out of a romance novel he would be pining to involve the MC in his life as nobility. But besides that he's also black so his appeal is going to be like, 10% of whatever it would be normally.

Astarion only refuses to let you go if you enable him to go full edge and turn into a proper vampire. The transformation warps his mind and basically removes everything good about him. The situation is that a ritual has started and Cazador has created thousands of essentially mindless husks that would wreak havoc if left unsacrificed. Astarion is tempted to finish the ritual, but it's very easy to talk him out of it. Then you get to choose whether you kill or spare the monsters. If Astarion isn't ascended by the ritual, he's just his normal posturing self and you can break up whenever.

It isnt even good. the writing is shit, it is like reddit/tumblr wrote it and they all want to deliver zingers like a fricking marvel movie. That or sex. The animation is stilted, and it drops off so hard in act 3. I thought it was a meme that act 3 wasnt even finished, but I have seen it myself

Because you have options and characters are presented as having all sorts of different viewpoints on race and sex. Beyond diversity for the sake of it, you can align with who you want and kill anyone you don't like, it's not beating you over the head with anything.
I have no idea how it caught on with normies since it's a niche genre and only on PC as of now, Badlurs Gate is a powerful IP but not that powerful. It's also a good game despite being woke and a lot of important cut content. I remember hearing coworkers talk about DoS2 when it first released so maybe Larian games just have a wider appeal than it seems.

It didn't sell that many. 5 million is a lot of copies for a niche title but nothing close to mainstream slop like COD or even the new Armored Core game. Even when the looney troons went broke trying to get it #1 on steam it still couldn't beat a Harry Potter game.
so I pirated it to see what all the hype was about and I'm liking it so far. made a few characters and enjoyed it. I'm only holding off because I've heard there's gonna be a patch sometime in Sept that fixes performance issues and possibly restores some cut content / flesh out act 2 and 3 more? (I've heard various anons say act 2 and 3 and really lacking. I admittedly kinda didn't explore act 2 nearly as much as act 1 so I can't confirm. I went the under dark route if it makes a difference). can anyone confirm or deny any of that? also, how's multi-player? do you just go thru the game again with friends and how does they work

It looked more to me like the criticisms of it on here were mostly from people who are here to debate society and culture and don't even play video games. It was incredibly obvious that most of its critics hadn't played the game.
