Why did people hate the CRT?

Why did gamers suddenly hate cathode ray tubes? it doesn't make.
The reason CRT is better is because CRTs have 60 fields per second when displaying 30 frames per second. The light gun in a CRT draws one line at a time, horizontally, but it alternates between odd and even lines. Meaning it will go through the length of the screen and draw all odd lines, then go back up and do all even lines. This is where the original interlacing term comes from.

      >most PS2 devs struggled (or never even bothered) to get 480p to work, so most games are stuck at 480i... which basically a CRT or expensive upscaler to look acceptable since the PS2's interlaced signal is legendarily awful even by interlaced standards and gets utterly mangled by LCD displays
      >most Gamecube games had 480p support... but locked behind special cables that only worked on the first revision of consoles and could only be had from Japanese catalogues or extremely niche speciality websites since Nintendo never fricking advertised them
      >Xbox had the component cable kit but it too was very obscure and poorly advertised
That's an entire generation right there where the grand majority of players would be playing with interlaced video. And one of these consoles is the best selling platform of all time, too.

        Anonymous

This is super important information because a lot of people mistakenly stretch out the truth of the capability of these consoles. Yes in theory they could, but never the norm and even further was an extreme rarity.
But this was common even in the next generation. PS3 was capable of 1080p, but it was only a small set of games usually that were nowhere as graphical complex as bigger titles. Then something like the 360 couldn't even do 720p for most of its games and had to rely on upscaling from 640p.

          Anonymous

Dark Souls couldn't even manage true full widescreen at 720p on gen 7 consoles, From had to render gameplay at a skinnier internal resolution and THEN stretch it out to 16:9 (though Demon's Souls did run at full proper 720p IIRC). Amusingly, the Switch version absolutely trashes the 360/PS3 versions of PTDE graphically, since it runs at 1080p30 with far fewer framedips (and with a simple mod it can run at 720p60, albeit with dips like the Pro/X 60fps patches for DS3 and Sekiro). Too bad about that sound quality.

It's funny when CRT debates turn to "the intended experience". Xbox visuals were clearly made around progressive scan even if a minority of people experienced it at the time.

480p is good too for shit meant to run at 480p (earlier PCs, Dreamcast, Gamecube, what little 480p content PS2 has, etc), but HD/semi-HD CRTs were 100% a stopgap just to get more mileage out of CRT technology while waiting for newer fixed-pixel technologies to mature economically.

        Anonymous

Literally just works. Even for consumer CRTs to play arcade games of varying refresh rates at native refresh rate, it just works as intended and mister does all the work. Just get the analog mister and use a vga to component or whatever. you might have to adjust some of the ini settings like sync on green or whatever, but aside from that, it's really straightforward.

    > CRTs have 60 fields per second when displaying 30 frames per second
Not always, and not usually with video game consoles. TV signals yes, but, Nintendo hacked the NTSC standard to paint only half of the lines, aka 240p, which is why you see those prominent black "scanlines" in between the image. They called it double strike and it truly is 60 FPS. Later consoles like the PS2 / Gamecube did draw the alternating lines, retroactively known as 480i.
    > it will go through the length of the screen and draw all odd lines, then go back up and do all even lines
not quite. it always returns to the top left and starts drawing from there, never in reverse, whether it is drawing all of the lines or not.

If there is any hope or future for the CRT retro gaming scene, it won't be in CRTs. It will be in a new phosphor display technology that achieves similar results. All CRTs will eventually die because there are specific parts to them which are no longer manufactured (and cannot be manufactured again without reviving the entire supply chain) and cannot be replaced without cannibalizing another existing CRT. I say all of this as someone who owns a CRT TV and desktop monitor.

    they didn't hate the CRT
the fact of the matter is that LCD's just looked... way fricking better
you can talk about muh response times, refresh rates, true blacks etc
the color, brightness and sharpness of an LCD panel was fricking insane by contrast, there was no going back
the recent boom is 90% content creators manipulating zoomers

      >the color, brightness and sharpness of an LCD panel was fricking insane by contrast,
the exact opposite of this is true. LCDs looked terrible, the color was terrible, the screens faded if you weren't exactly in front of it

I got this exact crt from facebook marketplace when I finally got in on the retro crt fad. while it was kind of cool the trailing(phosphor decay?) on it was so severe that it wasn't something I could seriously use long term. crt monitors have aged much worse than the tvs apparently. also trying to use it for browsing gave me a throbbing headache in like 20 minutes.

The main benefits of CRT are perfect blacks, superb motion clarity and very low response times.

Downsides are geometry issues, fishbowl reflections, moire patterns, too low dot pitch etc. on cheaper monitors and the tube wearing out over time on all monitors. I had to throw away a Samsung 959NF because it simply got too dim to use.

CRTs are literally a lost technology, replaced by cheaper and inferior alternatives because of average consumers vanity. Form factor played more important role than image quality.

if you give an office worker an lcd and a crt monitor and ask them which they'd like to read text from for 8 hours a day they would pick the lcd unanimously.

    >Why did gamers suddenly hate cathode ray tubes? it doesn't make.
Not gamers but office workers. I can only imagine the flicker people had to endure 8h a day when doing spreadsheets before PC CRT monitors were <85hz so the flicker wouldn't be so noticeable on bright colors.

People always go for Form over Function because they're morons.

    In this case:
Form - they chose LCD because they're light and physically thin
Function - CRT's have image quality 50 times better than anything we have, even today.

Take a picture of your CRT displaying an image anywhere near that quality.

  61. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

They were bulky and limited in display size. Even at the time everyone knew the image quality on LCD sucked but the aesthetic aspect won. And that's not even mentioning HD, most people were unaware that HD CRTs even existed meanwhile it was standard on those new fancy flat TVs. Also everyone forgets plasma was a thing, they avoided alot of the problems LCD had, PS3 still looks amazing on a good plasma TV.

Like most things on the internet, it gets a cultish following that suddenly becomes very loud and obnoxious and eventually you become sick of hearing about it and wish those guys would frick off. It's like souls games. Even though honestly I don't dislike the games, the fanbase fricks me off so much that I'm done with them now. The internet does this for everything eventually, everything turns into a circlejerk

The picture quality wasn't great. Also, CRTs are big and fricking heavy. I can lift and set up an LED on my own, but lifting a giant-ass CRT is a pain in the ass.

That said, CRTs did have a certain charm to them. As a kid, I remember playing NES games at my grandparents' house on an old piece of shit like pic related

Still don't get why heavy ass CRTs got bigger, heavier wood frames at the time.

It becomes a piece of furniture. You could even get frames to match the wood you use in your living room set.

    >The reason CRT is better is because CRTs have 60 fields per second when displaying 30 frames per second. The light gun in a CRT draws one line at a time, horizontally, but it alternates between odd and even lines. Meaning it will go through the length of the screen and draw all odd lines, then go back up and do all even lines.
what in the absolute mother of frick are you waffling about you insane gorilla Black person? this was, in no way shape or form, some sort of standard that defined CRT TV's. genuinely what the frick are you smoking you half-baked wikipedia-crawling turboBlack person? you're just saying words and hoping they're right without actually knowing shit

I never liked them because of the flicker (though 100Hz progressive scan CRTs did come out later in PAL land, dunno about NTSC) as well as the electrical noise, they're just exhausting to look at compared to a flatscreen.
