Why didn't the rise of digitally downloading games, as opposed to purchasing physical media, make games cheaper?

c'mon son, think about it for a minute, think about how the global economy works and now picture a CEO/CFO committing to degrowth when nations won't even dare try.

It did dumbass frogposter. The amount of sales was unthinkable in the years of discs. You can get thousands of games dirt cheap and it ain't no shitty bargain bin filled with garbage. If you wait 3 months after release, you can get a new game for 40bucks. Wait 6 months and it's half price. A year later and you can pick up your slop at 15 bucks.

Actually it did, it's just that morons like OP still pay full price for games because........?

the fact they are the same price as before implies it does make it cheaper. otherwise inflation would have already increased the price to 80 a while ago

games are cheaper after you factor in inflation. you see how much more you're paying for food, entertainment, electronics and vehicles?

      >let's ignore the fact that games were a rape price in the beginning
Imagine paying 1/4 of the minimum wage to give your son a trash game that lasts 25 minutes

not my problem people were so bored in the 80s they paid $40-$50 for a couple of blocks to flash on the screen.

Because it didn't have to. People were used to the previous prices and accepted the same prices online so why wouldn't publishers keep asking for the same prices?

because the idea of companies passing savings on to customers is braindead, people believe it because they've been fed the propaganda of our beneficent overlords for decades, way back since they found their perfect salesman, corporate commercial spokesman Ronald Reagan

    Games did get cheaper.
If modern games were still being sold on disc only, you would be paying $100+ for a game right now.

no one would be paying that, and companies know this. People are more stretched for disposable income per capita than ever before since ww2

It died on PC ever since Valve popularized tying games to a single account and gamers didn't see a problem with them getting cucked.

When it comes to consoles, PlayStation and Xbox normies play mostly F2P games like Fortnite or COD, they've already gotten used to spending tons of cash on cosmetics and other digital shit, so buying a digital version of NBA/FIFA/COD once a year seems normal to them. Also physical media doesn't get as many discounts/sales as digital.

Because the price of video games has never been about how much it costs to produce the medium they come on
