WotL + Slowdown patch is usually agreed to be the best version for new players, makes the story more comprehensible if you're not a complete ESL.
      It's very, very good.

Wotl patched is an easy solution for new players sure. I would argue that PS1+translation patch is better because of the sound effects but it's more esoteric to recommend.

TO is definitely better in some areas and definitely worse in others. I'd put them on par with one another

It is absolutely worth playing. Tactics Ogre as well. Its all the same guy. Its by far the best Final Fantasy game and its not even mainline. This was during a time where a Squaresoft game was guaranteed to be a fricking banger. Sorry you missed the boat. Shouldve been born sooner.

Speak for yourself, I was alive when this game came out and could have played it on release. I just never bothered because I enjoyed Ogre Tactics instead and the golden days of PC gaming which absolutely shit on the console era of that time.

Replayed WotL a few months ago. The story feels extremely rushed towards the end. Some jobs like bard are useless, while black mage and samurai are completely broken. It's no masterpiece.

      >a masterpiece can't be flawed
It got so many things right the "first" time (Tactics ogre exists) that it's still the game of the genre.

It's not perfect or very good. It's not irredeemable bullshit that ruins the game. I don't know what to tell you. Being a masterpiece is ultimately subjective.

            >not very good
not the guy you're replying to, but that's just wrong. FFT's a great story, and there's a reason it's stuck in many fans' heads as among the best FF stories. It's sloppy, especially towards the end, but being sloppy isn't mutually exclusive with quality.

          Granted "ancient evil awakens"
is a pretty big copout for an otherwise good plot nuanced with political intrigue, but realistically how could the game have ended on a fitting climax? It's an interesting question.

There is no reason to think you'll suddenly get locked, the game has always provided you the opportunity to save after every battle, why the frick would a player suddenly think this moment is any different? Its cheap bullshit, and horrid game design.
Luckily for me Ramza happened to have access to the busted shit like MP damage and the one that regens MP when you move, so I made him basically invincible. I absolutely would have dropped the game for good if I got stuck there though.

These are not nitpicks by any stretch of the imagination.

Points 1 and 3 are skill issues, so I'll leave those, but I don't think you understood the story if you thought anyone other than Ramza and Delita (and Ovelia) were the most important story characters. I'm sorry if you felt Mustadio didn't get enough screen time. Each character has his role to play, he plays it, and he's brought into the fold.

            >Points 1 and 3 are skill issues
More like you're coping that your childhood game isn't perfect. There's no actual strategizing in the game because of all the rng and how it hides the maps from you, and the fricked up boss fight has nothing to do with skill, either you're invincible or frick you, you die, better hope you leveled the right jobs.

A team of 5 squires with item is more than enough to clear the entire game without grinding or manipulating faith/brave at all

So what does Squire Ramza do against homosexual? Genuinely I forgot the dude's name, but what do you do when you can't have someone revive Ramza? homosexual will just two-shot Ramza so there's no room to heal then attack. Even if you try to raise speed a ton first instead of attacking, you'd be so preoccupied healing. Do you just pray he misses an attack at some point or something?

It definitely ain't fricking Tactics Ogre, which has barely any RPG mechanics and 99% of what you can do with your characters is a noob trap. That shit doesn't even remotely compare to FFT which is more freeform and generally lets you make overpowered demigods a la FFV if you understand the basic mechanics.

I'm actually ok with TO's classes. I can't stand how most maps have your melee units form a congo line to get into place to pull off their first attack 8 turns in during the 100th uphill battle.
Still a fun game but at least FFT solved that issue, while ruining other details.

triangle strategy is dogshit anon, it has limited tactics and options due to stripped down to near 0 rpg mechanics cause the game was designed for an audience that doesn't exist.

It's not that slow because it has way fewer random battles. Instead of fighting 3 enemies every random step you take, you fight 4-6 or more in one go in a longer fight. It has a similar speed of any older FF really. Emulation speed toggle helps a lot during battles too.

    >even bosses can just randomly have like 100 less HP due to the random equipment they're wearing
    >half the jobs suck ass and get invalidated by other jobs, literally just filler to force you to grind more for different jobs
    >whenever a story character joins your party permanently they stop existing in the story
    >40 hours into the game you can get trapped in an unwinnable boss fight with no way to back out, thus making you replay the entire game
    >said boss is so fricking overtuned that you cannot win unless you have made yourself completely invincible and thus capable of steamrolling the last 20 hours of the game afterwards

And I also got through the game on a single save file. Might want to brush up on your reading comprehension before you try to call others morons.

Why discriminate between mages and samurai when you can just make a samurai wizard? All the samurai skills run off of MA and don't need to actually equip katanas anyway. Putting their skillset on an actual mage with an effective MA stat results in a much better unit.

Mages are totally unviable late game because of their slow casting times. Physical damage is far more effective, and the best Samurai skills aren't the offensive ones, its the buff ones because the buffs are 100% accuracy on a radius around the Samurai with zero casting time.

Yes, and the mages start sucking dick after you're about halfway through the game.
Why would you ever use a mage and have to sit there for several turns, usually only hitting one target, maybe two if you're lucky, and it doesn't even kill the targets, when you can just slap dual wield on a physical class like Samurai and usually kill everything with a single combat? You could also put counter on your physical attacker and he'd then become a blender for enemies to walk into
Mages also don't get to use good armor and won't have a ton of HP. I don't get how you could ever think they are a good class later on. Summoners are a lot better than Black Mages for having a bigger AoE to work with, but its the same issue where a physical class just does better because you don't have to sit and wait and pray that the surrounding enemies didn't just all walk out of the AoE.

So why are you replying then? The conversation is about what's better.
I used a Geomancer the whole game cause she had my favorite design. Still made her a dual wielding menace which was a lot better than using her actual spells.

                Anonymous

Geomancy is great, though most people see the damage and immediately think its shit. Truth is because of it's unique formula you need a very specific build for it.

I don't know shit about that class because I only saw a group of them at one point late in the game and they did literally nothing to my team, which told me it wasn't even worth looking into, besides it'd also require me to do more JP grinding for them and I already had been grinding JP the whole game for well over a dozen hours.
Mainly I'm talking about the classes with Mage in their name being shit as well as summoner because the conversation started with Black Mages being claimed to be better than Samurais. Although I'll add that Geomancers are also shit because they're spells are pitifully weak for most of the game and the ailments side effects have extremely low chances of occurring.

About halfway through the game mages start getting instant cast and often free spells, infinite health through mana shield, and far higher damage per CT spent than physical attackers. Not to mention there are fewer reaction abilities which affects them.

                >infinite health through mana shield
Which is of better use on physical classes because they don't need MP as a resource to attack.
Can all these abilities even fit on the same mage or do some occupy the same slots, because if you can't have all that as well as the mana walk or whatever to keep the shield up, the mages aren't worth it.
                >there are fewer reaction abilities which affects them
What the enemy does with reactions late game doesn't matter at all, after Wiegraf your party should be basically unkillable anyways.

I expected something great because I heard good things about it, but god damn are they way too fricking squishy and the invisible skill barely helps cause they still need someone to heal back the 70% HP they just lost from a single attack, and they just get to sit and do nothing to contribute while they hide.
Only damn good thing about the class is taking dual wield and putting that on better classes.

You don't need to grind but it should have been way easier to experiment with classes organically instead of looking up their multipliers and spell formulas on gamefaqs and then grubbing jp even if you didn't full blown random encounter grind

        Anonymous

        >You don't need to grind
I don't believe you. The only way I could see someone not having to grind is if they have a job guide, know exactly what to gun for to be broken, and just solo everything with Ramza.
If you tell me you just spam abilities in the story maps after beating things down to 1 unit, I've got news for you, that is still grinding.

Also I just remembered the whole brave and faith mechanic is fricking moronic as well, just extra bullshit fluff to have to grind so that your units aren't worthless. I remember faith being really atrocious, making buff spells a waste of a turn more often then not unless you grind everyone's faith up so the spell doesn't miss all the time!

Both monks and black mages/summoners will carry anyone through the first couple chapters as soon as you try them, without grinding. And even if you are running painful anti-meta shit like crossbow archer you can still sweat through the early game
It's a lot more true that almost all players will CHOOSE to grind because the variety is so enticing and a taste of power in the strong classes will make people want to fill them out. There is no arguing that fft tempts people into degenerate ginding and gives them a system that begs to be exploited where throwing a rock at your buddy's head is as rewarding as killing a mind flayer

Monk is okay, and the mages suffer from slow ass casting times. I feel like at times I was gimping myself by using the mages, and finally I dropped them altogether when Samurais proved to do everything they could but without casting times and without accuracy checks.

Only if you already have the job unlocked, moron. It existed so you know how to get everyone else there, but its all guesswork to get someone to unlock the job first. Some early ones make sense, later ones feel like the requirements were decided by throwing darts at a board.

I tried them out regardless, and when a katana finally did break, I just realized "okay so I just buy a few copies of each katana and I've basically got unlimited uses" whats even more broken about them too is that they use inventory katanas first instead of the ones they're holding, and on top of all that they can use the abilities of katanas that they aren't even equipped with. They are stupid busted.

              Anonymous

Why discriminate between mages and samurai when you can just make a samurai wizard? All the samurai skills run off of MA and don't need to actually equip katanas anyway. Putting their skillset on an actual mage with an effective MA stat results in a much better unit.

Black mages fall off late because when your speed gets up to a certain point casting even level 1 spells starts seriously cutting into your actions, but they are insanely dominant in the early to midgame without jp grinding. They get perfect role equipment that gives magic power and elemental bonuses almost right away and nobody is competitive with their oneshot level damage for a long time

Not knowing everything ahead of time is part of the strategy. If you don't know or have access to the broken classes, you have to make a well rounded team that'll be useful for most situations. If you're any good at planning your team or understanding class and ability synergies, you should be able to breeze through it even against enemies that have semi-random stats and star signs. You can count the amount of fights where that shit changes the outcome of a battle on a single hand.

        Anonymous

Not being able to see the maps just makes it feel like I'm playing FFV but on a grid so fights take ten times longer.
Making a well rounded team that can handle anything is like what you do in all the mainline FFs, you don't know what's ahead, so you just pick what sounds the best. It doesn't work when an SRPG tries to follow this same logic because SRPGs are supposed to be more in depth than normal turn based RPGs, in a SRPG you should be able to see the maps so you can think about who you should bring with you into the next fight, but instead in FFT you have to die first, and then when you change your team to accommodate what you saw, you get screwed again because now all the enemies have different stats and abilities. Whats the point of the game being designed like a SRPG when you're meant to just make your party generally unkillable like how anyone would in a normal turn based RPG?
Genuinely you could turn FFT into an ATB FF and virtually nothing would change about how you build your team.

If you like FFT, Kingsvein just released the other day. It's the dev behind Voidspire Tactics and Horizon's Gate. A tight, focused campaign with FFT style jobs and really good exploration/environmental interaction. All your skills are usable outside of combat, and combat begins seamlessly from exploration, so you can set up traps etc. It uses small numbers for HP and damage, so every point matters. Also you can do stupid shit like fill your weapons with elemental magic and multi-attack to set off elemental interaction passives. Damage of an elemental type affects the terrain.
Rad Codex games have the best fricking engine.

How is Geomancer not the worst? it's the only truly bad class IMO as by the time you unlock it it's worse than every other option, and even pales in comparison to early classes like Black Mage.

        >Have to unlock every ability or you risk being unable to even do anything depending on terrain
        >Most abilities are just weaker versions of other magic spells, with the only upside being instant speed, but the downside of limited choice
        >their learned support ability boosts PHYS attack, so you need to learn an actual support ability from another magic class like black mage
        >movement abilities are narrow and kind of shit - you can move through water without penalty but only if it's not a swamp and it's not raining, or can...stop on lava, how many maps even have lava again?

Geomancy spells are low JP cost, 3-4 spells will cover almost the entire game. The spells have no charge time, no MP cost, are AoE, and inflict status effects. Their Support ability is necessary because the damage formula is MA+PA/2+1. Geomancer is not a caster class, its a physical class with a casting ability. It has good equipment options, great growths, and good SPD. Also it's cute.

            Anonymous

Geomancer is always good in every game in my experience even FF5 and that was one of its worse version but its a class you end up dropping eventually, its too samey and non-versatile just deals pretty decent damage on certain environments. I used Geo a frick ton in FF3.

              Anonymous

FFT has my favorite iteration of Geomancer, it can do almost everything. Its a fun class to use and almost every secondary A-Ability works with it. Again, its also cute. Here's a girl with low twintails wearing a big shirt, no pants, and swinging a big axe.

          OR
A geomancer pelting the enemy with AoE damaging debuff inflictors while sprinting at the enemy with 4 move, having hats & clothing available to boost attack and speed, and still having high physical damage when they get into melee range?

Calculators are so good it's basically a meme. I'm sure SE thought they balanced it by making it the slowest job but Calculate is way too much. For starters it has access to most magics outside of summoning. So if you invested into black mage, white mage, time mage, and oracle congratulations you have a grocery list of spells to choose from. The next thing is that all spells have no charge time. At all. But what truly breaks them is how their targeting works. Rather than selecting a point on the map and maybe a few adjacent tiles, calculators target via a few set parameters. CT, height, exp, and level. And by numbers, 2, 3, and a few others I'm forgetting. And this affects EVERY UNIT ON THE MAP. If you say "target everyone with a level divisible by 2" then every unit with an even numbered level will be targeted. By any spell. No questions asked. The biggest challenge is to not target your own allies but this barely counts as one. It's nothing to just change the parameters and turn the entire enemy team into frogs just because you can. Or buff/ heal your entire party in one go.

Look up a guide on how jobs are unlocked so you don't spend dozens of hours aimlessly grinding to hope you unlock a new one.
You can soft lock very easily in a boss fight late into the game, without outright telling you where the fight is, the only way I can tell you to avoid it is have two save slots, one used exclusively for saving on the world map and the other uses exclusively for saving after each story battle.

what's a good thing to pair with agrias' holy sword? i'm bored with geomancer and samurai shit.

Agrias is one of those characters that you can leave on her default job for the entire game and she'll still outperform nearly everyone else. Giving her other abilities is really something you do to frick around rather than for her actual benefit, since 90% of the time the better option is to use a Holy Sword move anyway.

    >Why didn't you guys tell me that this is the best Final Fantasy?
Literally almost every tierlist made by anons that allow no mainline games have it at the top.

    >20 minutes of spamming Accumulate to max level one job
    Eh, it wasn't THAT bad

100 minutes* since you're doing it across 5 units

How come nobody makes this dumbass argument to claim any other game with a class changing system is bad???? Nobody is forcing you to grind

          Anonymous

Because FFT combat is slow as frick, and you are forced to do grinding if you want to try and have any amount of fun with the game, and not just turn on auto-potion or do similar cheese and treat the whole thing like a movie.

            >Forced to grind for jobs like dancer & bard but otherwise you get everything else fast
            >They're the least fun and shittiest jobs in the game
            Something ain't adding up here...

You don't get anything fast past the first 5-10 hours unless you're using a guide to know what you need to level and how much you need to level it in order to unlock more jobs.
Idk maybe I just ruined my experience because I refused to look up a guide and want to eqperience the game organically as a player back in the day would, and it ended up taking me like 70 hours to beat the damn thing.

Most non-autistics can figure out they'll unlock more attackers from the new attack class it's not that complicated

                Anonymous

Except that's not how it works and you eventually hit a wall when using the new class and then have to do guesswork and level up random other classes that might unlock something
Samurai requiring monk is already kind of weird, but then they also require dragoon which requires thief
Ninjas requiring archer is kinda weird and then they also require fricking geomancer of all things
Dance requires the unit to be female and have geomancer and dragoon level 5

It just stops making sense and then you have to do the big grind to figure it out.

    This game is so bizarre.
You struggle through the first 2/3rds of it and then you get to Chapter 4 and suddenly it's piss easy, and that's before you even get Orlandeu.

Wiegraf is the true final boss, everything after is basically just a movie to watch.

Any recs for games with similar story? I fricking loved the first half of FFT.

50% of indie 'JRPG inspired' games are obviously trying to copy FFT's story.

it's an amazing game but it being way too easy holds it back
    trivializes everything
