The update that disabled bots for like an hour showed that there are only a couple of hundred bots in the game.

TF2 is the epitome of just make the fricking game fun and people will play

Becuase it's a good game with dedicated community which, for the best or for the worst, hasn't been the same since the game's release. Nowdays it's full of young people who are just as dedicated to TF as you and I were when the game was at its peak.

Not sure how Valheim is still up there, game is so poorly paced that it stops being entertaining very quickly.

TF2 has the most insufferable fanbase out there. Right next to Smash community. I hate you homosexuals so much you wouldn't believe.

TF2 has characters people like and can shitpost with, with the creation tools like SFM and GMod to make those shitposts as elaborate and esoteric as you want them to be. Even if the game itself dies, people will still make entertaining animations with the 9 classes because they all have distinct enjoyable personalities and enough voice lines to splice together or train an AI on to get them to say literally fricking anything. Entire non direct gameplay loop related memories have formed just around spamming character lines for this reason.

The game's also just simply fun to play when you're not playing against bots.

    >tl;dr personality, creation tools, enjoyable gameplay

Age doesn't matter when the game is good.
