>tight and precise stick and works great for games made for it
>great ergonomics and weight
>satisfying button layout
>king of both 2D and 3D
why do people hate it other than the third prong which actually functions very well

>other than the third prong
It's 99% the third prong. It's not that bad of an idea in abstracto but it required unlearning a lot of ingrained reflexes that were already well-established at the time.
>greatest dpad ever
>almost no games take advantage
criminal
Anyone who thinks the NES d-pad was bad can suck me.
I just found out about the 2nd control method in goldeneye where you can use the d-pad to move and the analog stick to look around. Good use of the d-pad as its like using WSAD on PC, very similar to a modern FPS control method all around.
The Tony Hawk games take full advantage, the button layout pretty much just copies the playstation controller, which is a very good thing. Using the N64 joystick to play tony hawk gave me aids.
I didn't like having buttons called "C Right" etc. Yes that's enough to dislike the design.
But yeah third prong. It was kind of weird to hit the L button when you're on prongs 2 and 3.
Name one game that requires L when holding 2 and 3.
Super Smash Brothers
Wasn’t L the same as R in smash?
taunting is not required
I dont think I ever used the Dpad on my n64.
Used it in Mischief Makers and Fighters Destiny. It's actually a pretty good DPAD.
Most of the awesome wrestling games on N64 (wcw/nwo, wrestemania 2000, no mercy) use the dpad extensively.
It’s absolutely great, until it stops working
Also the thumb pad would benefit from having more area and a rubber grip
I like that Nintendo was 1 extra engineering crunch week away from someone fixing the design of the controller
>Shunin, what if... we just place the analog on the lower inner side of the handle so the player doesn't have to do let go of one of the controller's handles?
>Taro shut the frick up, which side would we even choose to place the single analog stick on? I knew I couldn't trust the new hire that didn't even get drunk on sake on his first meeting with the boss.
They should've at least came up with the Gamecube controller before shipping the N64.
>the new hire that didn't even get drunk on sake on his first meeting with the boss.
shamefur dispray
I like the N64 more than dualshock. Dualshock feels imprecise.
And obscure the dpad? The point is nobody knew if 3D analog would catch on so dpad and stick were separated so as to let developers have a choice which to use.
It turned out stick was the future and 99% of games used it. You're saying this shit in hindsight
>why do people hate it except it's flaws
absolutely based moron
like a gamecube controller but with a big fat wiener in the middle
how did they get away it it nintendo bros?
I didn't hate it, and I was exclusively a SEGA/Sonytard back in the day. But I had no problems with it playing with my friend's N64. That said, the Dual Shock design made it instantly obsolete, and it was kinda pointless to put a D-Pad in there when Nintendo heavily discouraged its use.
Dualshock sucks ass
It's ever so slightly too small for adult hands, and the stick could use a rubber tip and more durable parts. That's all I have to say about it really. I actually really like the particular range of motion the stick has, and I think it's a shame everyone went with Playstation's design after that generation.
>tight
Sure thing, buddy.
>>tight and precise stick and works great for games made for it
You know a controller is fricked when nowadays I can get maybe $10 more dollars on eBay just for saying its stick isn't completely fricked up
Because every other controller is better
why can't you accept the fact that it's mediocre at best?
As a kid I had 0 problems with it. As an adult with large hands it's extremely uncomfortable to use now.
lol what? N64 is literally the controller for large hands. It's second to the duke in comfort
Maybe if you're using the dpad. There's almost no space between my fingers when using the joystick. I deal with it, though.
ahh i could see that
i have weird ass spider fingers tho that are really skinny
man i remember my old roommate used to have the most bizarre modified-claw grip that he used for goldeneye and smash
it was so fricking obscure i cant even accurately describe it
practically non-euclidean
id make fun of him, but he was actually pretty good, so wtf do i know?
i have the opposite problem tbh
as a kid i liked SNES controller and hated the N64 one
now i cramp up due to how smol the SNES one is, while the N64 one is pretty decent imo
The list really does go on...
This thing is absolutely impossible to move exactly up/down or left/right.
You must have the hand eye coordination of a 90 yo with Parkinson disease
The controller is great, but its got shit durability.
once the joystick start to loosen, it becomes complete ass to use, and looses a lot of the precision that made it good.
Also 2 of my 4 controllers have the issues with the C-buttons being somewhat stuck or tight
because OF THE FRICKING SHIT ASS DURABILITY
>b-but it was the first anal-
frick off with this nonsense, I've never seen a stick that loses its self-centering part like this
you ever taken one apart?
pretty easy to see why. when you open it up, half the analog stick, and ground down bowl/support thing will pour out in tiny little plastic chunks.
then theres the fact that the up/down gear that attaches to the stick will generally get bent out of shape (due to how often you hold up in 3D games)
i reckon ninty did it on purpose in an effort to ship as many controllers as possible
I know the problem, the fact is Nintendo should have fixed it before shipping their controllers out
of course
but they manufacture hardware
and the N64 was the system where if you didnt own 4 controllers you were gay
its a conspiracy mannnnnnn
im also convinced that mario party was also a huge part of the conspiracy. it was literally designed to destroy controllers
Mario Party 1? 100% on that the entire SPIN THE STICK AS FAST AS POSSIBLE minigames utterly destroyed sticks And palms on purpose
>king of both 2D and 3D
name five 2D games for the N64
kirby
yoshis island
paper mario
you can play donkey kong (arcade) in DK64
ummmmmmm
i give up
Killer instinct
Mischief makers
Bangai O
Yoshi's Story
Rakuga Kids
Bust a move
Command and Conquer
Clay Fighter
Dr Mario 64
Paper Mario
Pokémon puzzle league
Puyo puyo 64
StarCraft 64
Tetris 64/New Tetris/Magical Tetris Challenge
Worms Armageddon
It's just become a meme to hate it by people that never even held one. My only real complaint is that the joystick feels weird coming back to it after playing on duel shocks for so long but I'm overly sensitive to joysticks in general
>It's just become a meme to hate it by people that never even held one
im convinced of this too tbh
i dont remember hearing anyone else i knew complain about it. considering it had some of the first 3D games i ever played on a console/with controller, i thought it was rather intuitive
like the first time i picked up mario 64 it was just straight into the action
same with OoT
The only legit problem is how loose the sticks become after heavy use and sometimes it can feel a bit cramped
thats a fair point
if the only N64 controller you ever played was one that had already been MARIOPARTYD.com to death, it would undoubtedly leave a poor taste in your mouth
when they were new, they had some of the snappiest sticks ive ever used
We’ll yeah I’ve still got a green one that snaps back so I’m glad that lasted but I’ve also got a grey one that loose
Seems like a good thread to ask:
What the frick do I do to have a decent controller on N64? My sticks are very loose. Do I rebuild the stick? Is there a decent 3rd party option? What option is closest to OEM in terms of performance?
you can get a replacement stick chasis online, or you can open it up and fix it yourself
if the latter, the main issues are the fact that the stick "sinks" into its bowl. this can be ghettorigged relatively easy by adding some plastic around the base of the stick, where it sits on the gears.
the other big issue is that sometimes those gears themselves can become warped. its especially notable on the forward input since its such a common input, and if you open it up, youll see that gear is warped. if you heat it VERY slightly, you can easily bend it back into shape, and this will eliminate a lot of the play

The last time I held a N64 controller, it was too small to comfortably use.
They're made for children's hands.
It's actually more uncomfortable the smaller your hands are. It fits really comfortably in large hands.
>tight and precise stick works great >made for it
>great ergonomics and weight
>satisfying
>king of both
What was OP really trying to tell us?
