Quality control can be lacking. I remember getting a Pelican PS2 controller that had a fricked up triangle button that required you to push down on it extra hard for the input to register.
And you are wrong. I was a poorgay who had nothing but jank ass third party controllers and they were all exclusively shit. D-pads that stick and/or squeak moronicly loud, buttons that are mushy and give zero feedback that after a while stop working consistently, and plastic that feels lighter and flimsier than paper, and more often than not the least comfortable fricking design known to man.
Has this controller not gone bad on you yet? I've been wanting to get one but I keep hearing that the analog sticks start drifting not long after use, because apparently when fully actuating the sticks, they leave an opening for particles of dust and whatnot to come into, so it affects the sticks and they start drifting.

I heard similar things for Hyperkin's 360 controller. I heard it feels worse and has worse build quality than original. It's also missing SOVLful green light indicator.
Do you happen to own a SNES scout Bluetooth controller? I want a wireless controller for my SNES and I rather use something that resembles the original one.
Just because a problem wasn't observed by an undiscerning simpleton doesn't mean it didn't occur.
It's a tree falling in the forest situation, but the 3rd party poorgays deserve their ribbing.
Like others said, they’re often just poorly built. But I too have had decent experiences; in fact for my OG Xbox I only have a Madcatz one and some GameStop branded one, and they actually work really well.
It completely depends on what you got and since there was so many companies flooding the market with them it was a complete crap shoot on what should and shouldn't be bought
They would just pump these things out like diarrhea
Re5 with a PS3 steering wheel was fun, though In both you can't exactly walk forward, so it creates a strange dynamic. Killing zombies involves proper positioning which was not fun. Grenades were my friend.

Some are terrible, some are arguably better than OEM. It’s not consistent across the board. I’ve had a Rock Candy 360 one for 10 years that has never failed me once.

Logitech makes d-pads for non-action games. Really stiff and long lasting. Great for games that use them to navigate menus.
But shit for trying to do any kind of Street Fighter style inputs on.
But they are kind of nice for playing 8 bit games. Remind me of the stiff NES d-pad.
When someone had a third party controller it usually was because it had some weird gimmick that seemed cool at first but turned out to be complete garbage.
Some kids treated their controllers like trash and wore them out quickly.
Parents bought replacement controllers that were the cheapest piece of crap on the shelf, and the kids predictably trashed those too.
Kids grew up to be people who blamed the controllers but it was really their own rough treatment of them.
I had that exact controller and playing halo 2 online with it. There were certain crouch jumps to get into advantageous spots around the maps and I struggled hard doing it with this controller. Switched to an official one and never had an issue.
Build quality, ergonomics, and durability tended to be significantly lacking compared to official controllers, there were exceptions though, and as infamous as Madcatz is they've made some nice peripherals here and there like the Xbox Blaster lightgun designed for House of the Dead 3.
I seem to recall that my MadShatz PS2 controller had (or has, since I still have it somewhere) a loose and wonky right thumbstick for seemingly no reason. I don't think any of my official controllers developed this issue despite seeing much heavier use.
Back when it was the new hot item, I bought a broken Dreamcast off someone. It also came with games and an extra Madcatz controller.
Then me and my mom, bought a brand new Dreamcast from Target, did a little switcheroo, returned it, and I had a brand new Dreamcast for dirt cheap...
The problem was it stopped working right away. We returned it again, got a new one, and what do you know? Same fricking thing! We literally did this like four times, until I realized that the console always worked fine, until I plugged the Mad Catz controller in.
I didn't even think it was possible, and I'm not sure why, but that Mad Catz controller definitely broke consoles.
(I wish I would have kept it, but I was so pissed, when I realized that the dumb extra controller was causing me all this grief, that I literally threw it in the sewer)
I dunno, I don't do it anymore but taking advantage of stores return policies always felt like a victimless crime... The only reason I threw it in the sewer is because I was like 15 years old and needed to get rid of a couple beer bottles, so I threw it with them.
(For many years I'd actually find stores selling games on clearance, find other stores selling the same, matching game, at regular price, and trade them in there for new games (or sometimes store credit) effectively getting any brand new game I wanted for $10-$20)
this thread is mad moronic
I barely played games as a kid and the third party pad would almost always break in pretty much 3 days because it was a piece of shit made in china for literal pennies
get official or don't be a moron
the only reason third party today is decent is because everyone uses the same shit parts
All controllers eventually require repairs, it's the nature of interaction. Be it button membranes, contact points on PCB having residue causing bridging, broken traces, failing potentiometers, decaying plastics, etc.
OEM controllers are plentiful, parts are recreated and in high circulation and availability. The farther off the deep-end of third party controllers you go, the less available the replacement parts become. It's the reality of it. Eventually you're just spawn camping the next Madcatz retrocon to pop up on ebay for a new pointer. Same goes for all you fans of hori and ascii, what have you. The things we use today will wear tomorrow, what matters is your will to take care of them.
You make a great point. probably the best reason to buy OEM is because the parts are easy to get. but if you're not mechanically inclined or a rich-gay then it's just a moot point.
Who else had picrel? It was the designated "4th person who didn't bring their own". Wasn't badly designed, everything worked, but it was for the lowest status player
3rd party controllers were always the designated 2nd+ player controller. Nobody liked them, but when you told your parents you needed a second controller, it was the cheap one on the rack so that's what you got.
it's funny because now the official ones are minimum viable garbage and the 3rd parties are blazing ahead with the caveat that there's almost too much choice and compatibility is an issue since the console makers other than Nintendo demand licensing fees
>official ones are minimum viable garbage and the 3rd parties are blazing ahead
Which one is better than official ones? While they give more choice for stuff that doesn't matter I can't say they are better on where it matters. Feel and build quality is generally much better on official controllers.
Modern dualshocks are mostly ass. I'd rather play on an 8bitdo controller
Just because a problem wasn't observed by an undiscerning simpleton doesn't mean it didn't occur.
It's a tree falling in the forest situation, but the 3rd party poorgays deserve their ribbing.
gay. Just because your failson moronic kid ass used yours as a backscratcher and baseball bat doesn't mean the controller is irredeemable. Treat your things better you snot. With GameCube in particular MadCatz was more reliable than official controller. On an unrelated note the official DualShock 2 was the sturdiest controller ever
I had it
I used it because I only had 3 other normal N64 controllers and didn't want my friends getting pissy about losing because of having to use the 3rd party controller
It really grew on me
Anyone here get their hands on one?
It doesn't seem to be ideal for any one scenario but as a jack of all trades controller that actually has a good D-Pad I'm interested in more thoughts.
Absolutely dumb you can't use it wired though.
I use this for all my games now, even 3D ones. Using the analog sticks felt weird at first but all I do is shift the way I hold the controller and it's comfy.
I use this for all my games now, even 3D ones. Using the analog sticks felt weird at first but all I do is shift the way I hold the controller and it's comfy.
Is there any ETA on when the new firmware is dropping?
They've been talking about it since early December.
It won't fix being wireless only and having no analog triggers but it's at least some improvement.
>Is there any ETA on when the new firmware is dropping?
Nope. I'd like it though to switch the Z and C buttons. C being left bumper and Z being right bumper seems pretty weird.
>Is there any ETA on when the new firmware is dropping?
Nope. I'd like it though to switch the Z and C buttons. C being left bumper and Z being right bumper seems pretty weird.
It's so weird because that means functionally the only thing this has over the previous M30 is the dual sticks. Then the Xbox M30 adds another pair of functional shoulder buttons at the cost of being wired only.
If 8BitDo ever make M30 Pro then Retro-Bit spent all that R&D only for a Saturn controller with sticks that even Saturn owners are having a hard time justifying since it's not a complete 3D Pad replacement.
Most of the ones that complain trashed their third party controllers playing games that require a lot of mashing, or they themselves just mindless button mashers when playing multiplayer games.
You would note that Nintendo systems suffer from this the most due to Mario Party, Smash, and wrestling games.
I haven't had much issue with them either, but there are some that are made with poor quality. I remember some ads for controllers shaped like an airplane, and that was the standout feature which may not be ideal but it could fill a market that stock controllers may not satiate. I know I preferred using the Ascii Pad FT over stock Dreamcast controllers for games that support it.
Hori is legit. There are a couple of others, but they're not retro. Really depends on the third party. Don't fool yourself. That controller is trash compared to the OEM equivalent. Both aesthetically and performance.
I liked this controller more than the first party Sega one that came with the dreamcast. The official dreamcast controller's d-pad felt stiff and had edges that'd make my thumb hurt when playing fighting games. I could whip out special moves all day with this cheap piece of shit though. Loved it.
Apparently the dreamcast had a hall effect magnetic sensor in the joystick. You can buy mods for ps4 and ps5 controllers now so the sticks don't drift.
I used to have a madcatz GameCube controller and it was perfectly functional, didn't see why people mocked madcatz. I think people like to subtely flaunt having better possessions. I did grow up poor with rarely any other options though so that obviously impacts my view. I recently bought a PowerA "Enhanced" wired controller for emulation and it's the best controller I've had in my entire life but most reviews called it a respectable little brother controller.
People also have wildly off estimates on what you can run with low specs, I can run most games from <4 years ago with minimal issues and minor tweaking but people on tech subreddits tell me my computer won't work at all for gaming or anything when they find out my specs
These boys work great.
I have a couple of originals and one has bad rumble, and the other switches on and off randomly... they are just old.
These new ones are cheap but pretty good enough.
The only downside is ONE Wii Channel (WiiRadio), which is a hack and not official, it does not read the controllers very well at first, but once it picks them up, they work nicely. This also happens with the original WiiMotion controllers, so it is not a 3rd Party issue, really.
I think I went trough 3 fricking third Gamecube controllers because I could not be bothered to pay for a OEM one.
Why?
Because the stores that sells them cheaply also take in the worst kind. That is how it used to be.
Today isn't not that bad with Hori vs 8bitdo somewhat widely available, but I still remember buying really bad 3rd party controllers with ZERO manufacture/brand markings far into the 2000s.
I can't image how bad it would have been for SNES/NES/PS1.
The analog sticks never felt right. Playing Halo wasn't fun with the crappy controllers. After a while I stopped buying them and never looked back. They might be better now.
Unless they are licensed products, they tend to either fail pretty soon or feel like garbage. Shit d-pad, shit buttons.
The few times I have had third party controllers, they were gifts or bundled garbage. The only time I bought one myself was when I was a teen with a tiny allowance, and it was like putting a note through a sewer grate.
Gamecube and PS2 kiddies had bad experiences with 3rd party controllers and they dominate the discussion on /vr/.
The only 3rd party controllers I had that were bad back in the day were.
1. The Dreamcast Astro Pad. This thing is just fricking horrible to play with. It never wore out or went bad on me because I just refused to play with it at all. And if you plug it in at the same time as a MAS stick it will blow the controller ports of your Dreamcast.
2. The Performance series of controllers for the PS1. These cost $10 brand new, and later on they were down to $5. They feel good to use but they wear out very quickly. You'll be lucky to see 100 hours of action games out of this. As a strictly player 2 controller it would be fine for when you have friends over.
I owned a dozen+ more 3rd party pads and the rest were completely fine and I used them at great lengths over the official controllers.
My favorite was the Mad Catz digital controller for PS1 that had a Saturn-style d-pad.
>Gamecube and PS2 kiddies had bad experiences with 3rd party controllers and they dominate the discussion on /vr/.
My first experience was with N64 pelican controllers, those were trash
My cousin used to pass it to me, still won though
This is the Performance gamepad.
The d-pad is soft and feels good for playing fighters, but it wears out very quickly.
But for $10 you get what you pay for.
This is the Mad Catz Advanced Controller for PS1. Never failed on me after many, many hours of fighters and action games.
However, you should refrain from wrapping the cord around the controller because it will cause fraying, and I've seen it happen with many other Mad Catz controllers.
The only 3rd party brands I remember fondly are Hori and Ascii, although Hori controllers can be kinda hit or miss nowadays and I have no idea if Ascii still makes any. Absolutely hated every Mad Catz/Pelican/whatever the frick else controller I've ever used, and it doesn't help that those controllers were usually relegated to younger siblings, and as such, were almost always completely filthy.
if you have fond memories of 3rd party controllers youre probably a SNES chad if you have negative memories of 3rd party controllers youre an n64 shitbabby. 3rd party n64 controllers were terrible especially the ones with the metal stick and the modern chinese ones are just way too sensitive impossible to play any sort of FPS on there with one of those. Youre still shitbabbies cause you missed out on all the great super nintendo 3rd party controllers. I remember buying the superpad with the super famicom button color scheme cause it looked way cooler than the oem one and it functioned just fine. 3rd party controllers didnt really go to shit until analog sticks became commonplace
Quality control can be lacking. I remember getting a Pelican PS2 controller that had a fricked up triangle button that required you to push down on it extra hard for the input to register.

It's dead.
I like the controller but what the hell. Such a weird unintuitive mapping for those buttons.
The Chinese button
>Here is your controller bro
These were actually good.
3rd party controllers used to be hit or miss, now any 3rd party controller being made today is 90% miss.
I remember the god awful solar flare of LED's those things had.
I had this controller and it outlasted the ones that came with the GC
Same here
I hope you gave it to your friend to use, or sibling, and you took the Player 1 OEM controller.
everyone wanted the regular controllers thinking they were superior, so MadCatz was my go-to
Some are awesome.
But those were the outliers.
why was there a sega playstation controller when sega was still making consoles
That's for the PS2 after the DC was discontinued.
Legit
I liked this controller more than the first party Sega one that came with the dreamcast. The official dreamcast controller's d-pad felt stiff and had edges that'd make my thumb hurt when playing fighting games. I could whip out special moves all day with this cheap piece of shit though. Loved it.
Apparently the dreamcast had a hall effect magnetic sensor in the joystick. You can buy mods for ps4 and ps5 controllers now so the sticks don't drift.
My parents only bought me one. I thought it looked cook but it broke
>Here is your controller bro
I had an Intec (I think) GameCube controller that would short the system when plugged in and cause it to turn off. I don’t really trust them since.
People also have wildly off estimates on what you can run with low specs, I can run most games from <4 years ago with minimal issues and minor tweaking but people on tech subreddits tell me my computer won't work at all for gaming or anything when they find out my specs
>tech subreddits
That's because people on tech subreddits eat paste. A lot of older computer hardware is capable of some form of emulation.
Hori been making the sexy for a while. Can be rare but based.
>I've never had a problem with them.
because everyone else did, you were just lucky
The analog sticks never felt right. Playing Halo wasn't fun with the crappy controllers. After a while I stopped buying them and never looked back. They might be better now.
Because they were awful and I'll never buy any again, learn that as a kid.
>The only time I bought one myself was when I was a teen with a tiny allowance, and it was like putting a note through a sewer grate.
> and it was like putting a note through a sewer grate.
Wait what did I just see? Was that AI generated?
whats a second party controller
Fun fact the dpad in this controller (and similar ones like it) can be used as a replacement on sega genesis controllers
This is the Mad Catz Advanced Controller for PS1. Never failed on me after many, many hours of fighters and action games.
However, you should refrain from wrapping the cord around the controller because it will cause fraying, and I've seen it happen with many other Mad Catz controllers.
sticks usually sucked and they just felt worse to use for the most part, although the snes ascii pad was my favorite controller ever
>Ascii
Forgot to mention them. Great third party mfg.
They fall apart 10x faster majority of the time. Similar to how things are in America with the far left making too many decisions for everyone
All the third party controllers I've had have been bad. Pic related is currently the only N64 controller I have on hand and it's fricking awful.
got one of these bad boys it's good
frick bro despite what i hear about the dpad if it had a right stick, even if it were just a dpad on the reverse side i'd buy one
if you have fond memories of 3rd party controllers youre probably a SNES chad if you have negative memories of 3rd party controllers youre an n64 shitbabby. 3rd party controllers didnt really go to shit until analog sticks became commonplace
and it's wild that 3rd parties are the ones putting in better sticks now while OEM are putting in shitty ALPS with no extra features
Is the d pad good?
The original one is trash
