Brands have become religions for people in the modern era, they see the IPs as a part of themself and an attack on the IP is an attack on them.

You can choose to make your opinion on all three subjects. Hell you can even choose to listen to brand loyalists or companies if they do shill here. But you have the ability to sort through the shitposts, make your own, pick your own decisions. You often see posts like "Ganker lied to me this game is good" because people listen to themselves first

      but as said
Being honest about criticism isn't defending a company and lying doesn't help against the things you should criticize a company for

        Anonymous

"What you should criticize a company for" is very subjective. I know you mean about unambiguous shit but I've seen people take this to extreme ends. Like one member of company A supports thing B on personal profile so don't support product C. Or A is accused of D so don't buy C, even if the case was dismissed
Maybe it's my view of the world, but if I had to agree with every opinion of every employee I'd probably not be able to buy anything at all. Like you don't need an excuse to not buy something, there's already too much shit to spend money and/or time on. That's justification enough

          Anonymous

I agree, some people take it too far and make me wonder what the hell they could support? Hell you don't even need to fully not support a company but other parts you can especially since a lot of companies are into multiple things.

It's just insular communities. You like thing so you go to place that likes thing and they tell you to like thing more. No one who dislikes it will go there and the end result is never learning how to deal with opposing opinions. It's why it's not limited to games but basically anything now-a-days.
Everyone you know likes thing, You've discussed in depth why you do and everyone agrees, then the others come. They gotta be wrong, right?
Seriously look at most threads with this "arguing" there's no consensus at all. Just both sides spouting their facts at each other and being dumbfounded the other doesn't understand. Literal zero understanding or deeper communication. Yet they do it every thread. Same arguments, same posts, and they just do it again next thread knowing the outcome anyway. Note the amount of arguing with strawmen from other threads or mocking of opinions that haven't actually been posted. It's very alarming
There's a lot of people that lost the ability to communicate

Mostly sunk cost and tribalism. This is a super consumerists world we live in and the more people invest in products of a brand, the more people will defend it. It's been a part of gaming for a long time, just now that it's the fans whose mainly turning the tribal wars wheel rather than the companies themselves.

Because everybody goes through a "I can say whatever I want and get away with it!" phase when they first encounter the internet, but if you're a latecomer normie who grew up inside the walls of social media and online shopping, then you have to sublimate that troll impulse into something socially acceptable that won't put you on the wrong side of a 3rd world moderator.

So instead of calling each other wiener-enthralled homosexuals and getting the troll out of their system in a simple and direct way, they have to instead clamor for any, ANY reason to contradict another person and tell them that they're wrong, as an "above-board" way of attempting to attack a stranger's self-esteem and trying to ruin their day for the petty thrill of imaginary dominance.

The desire to experience fleeting power over others is powerful enough to override basically any principle, even the ones they build their identity around, which is why you'll have badge-wearing Anticapitalists tripping over themselves to undermine and shoot down a criticism leveled against international corporations like Disney, even though they should logically agree with that criticism and consider it fuel for the fire. Because one-upping a stranger is more gratifying than solidarity against hundred-billion dollar institutions, and is something they can immediately put in their emotional wallet, especially when the corp is smart enough to superficially align with their self-congratulatory cultural stances.

It'd be easy accuse this trend of being encouraged and/or engineered by said corps as a deliberate disruption against a helpful consensus forming beyond their reach, but in truth, I believe the common person has something in common with jannies: because they cannot find a sense of purpose elsewhere in life, they will simply do it for free.

Poor arguements and shitty reasoning are still bad regardless of who your are defending/attacking. People who blindly support any argument to hate on a company are just as bad as the who blindy defend companies. Both types of people lack integrity because every arguement they make is in bad faith.
