I've done it before but only for certain genres. If you find someone you really like playing against in a fighting game, for example, friend them and run some sets, maybe talk about the matchup after etc. It's turned into real (still online) friendships, not often but sometimes.

Easier connection with your friends and privacy. Unfortunately in-game voice chat and Steam friends are losing purpose because Discord is like a Swiss army knife for communication. You can either make a small group or server for your group of friends easily or just chat in privates.
However, Discord is dogshit platform used by majority and Discord servers are always chaotic as hell and serve no purpose, other than derailing discussions and posting porn.
I use it for all my friends that I still talk to from high school. We all bring in our new friends from our lives like work and whatnot to play multiplayer games. I don't really ever add randoms from matchmaking though.
