Why does everyone hate this game exactly? I just played it and aside from Wily Stage 1, I thought it was perfectly fine. There's a lot of things I like about it. The art style is nice and the levels are all visually appealing (except maybe Clown Man's stage). I like how certain levels have you use weapons to progress or find secrets. The way you could use the mega ball to jump multiple times in mid-air was really cool, I wish the other games had something similar. The level design certainly wasn't the best in the series, but it was good enough for the most part, barring a couple annoying gimmick stages. The robot masters are noticeably easier than in previous games, but that's not necessarily a bad thing imo. It's definitely not my favorite, but I just don't understand the hate this game gets.

I like MM8 a lot. However it did some derivative things that were kind of odd
    >no E-tanks (which is okay) but instead we have "Rush flies around and drops goodies". Strange
    >on that note, we don't have the big 3 Rush abilities, but instead there's a one-off bike for some reason. not necessarily bad but doesn't feel like MM
    >Buster upgrades are fun for a little while but feel weak and/or useless compared to base Mega Buster
    >Green Devil takes too long

I cheated in the flame sword and played through the game as pretend-Zero, it's fun.

It's trying to be a Mega Man X game set in Classic, which doesn't quite work as well. 7 and &Bass are the same way.

What exactly does that mean? It's MM on a newer platform so it can't be done? There's no subtanks, capsules etc.

        It's the general tone, really.
        >The cast is redesigned to look taller and tougher. i.e. Mega Man himself looks more like X than the blue Astro Boy lookalike he was in the NES games.
        >Plots start getting a little darker and more focused on than normal for Classic with new characters like Bass, Duo, and King. Because of it, the stage select is restricted based on plot progression instead of letting all eight be available at once.
        >Gameplay is more focused on killing enemies and finding hidden items like MMX than the usual platforming of Classic.
        >Boss battles are trivialized with the MMX strategy of stunlocking them with their weaknesses.

            Mega Man was always anime.

Nah, the key of the X series is the faster and more hectic gameplay; 8 plays slower than even the previous NES games. The main flaw of 8 on its own terms is the uneven flow because of the excessive novelty stage gimmicks (shoot em up/snowboard sections, "puzzle" rooms, etc), which makes replaying stages kind of a chore. The development was headed by artists and it clearly shows. Plus, the 2-part stage selection is kind of pointless and the game is altogether too easy even without exploiting RM weaknesses.

      It's the general tone, really.

I don't really see the tonal stuff myself; the goofy melodrama had been an element of the series since MM3, and Bass showed up in the previous SNES game out of the popularity rise of Vegeta-style "hot-blooded rival" characters in manga and anime. Plus, the artwork is perfectly cute and colorful, and the game looks more childish than the NES ones in general because of the lack of color restrictions.

You've got a point about the focus on fighting before platforming, but that's probably out of the general decreased difficulty and necessity to minimize pitfall instant kills, which were beginning to become passé around the 5th generation.

      >Boss battles are trivialized
All RM battles since early in the series are completely trivial if you exploit weaknesses; the player-regulated difficulty is a classic element, but as I mention above the bosses are still Toad Man-tier easy even in a Buster-only run.

All that said, I do like the game and wasn't particularly offended even as a fan of the previous games (I don't see the "hate" OP mentions

      [...]

); it's beautiful to look at and polished enough on a shallow level. But it's definitely on the boring side to casually pick up and play.

Yeah, but they don't go into a drawn-out pain animation that resets their combat routine like they do in the SNES/PS1 games.

You know Saturngays are touched in the head when their argument for their version of MM8 being the better version is "uhhh you can fight two guys you already fought in the other game"

        Anonymous

If it is only that, I guess it is too little to call it the best version.
I don't care about console wars, I was just asking, since I never cared that much about 8.

Their argument usually boils down to "Saturn's Tengu Man theme is better". I personally think it's only fitting in the shoot-em-up part, but not the actual stage.

Someone should make a mod on that, now that you mention it. Anyway, I think the devs put more care on the Saturn version, due to it being better at handling 2D games. X4 too.
