40k or so would've been worth over a million back then. Given the cost of living was low back then and people averaged 1.5k adjusted bucks a year in wages, yes, 1 mil would've been more than enough for all of them

He had enough money to escape with everyone locked away in a chest and an escape route multiple times, but he couldn't stand the idea of actually doing it and losing his sense of purpose so he kept making up excuses until it was too late. The gang always had an out, Dutch was the only one the Pinkerton's wanted and he could've let the others live safely at any moment while trying to escape himself.

He's a stubborn idealist in a world that doesn't have a place for people like him, rather than change and adapt he chose to blame others and play pretend as a righteous gunslinger until he damned himself. That's the recurring theme of the games. John had an out as well, but damned himself and his son by seeking revenge.

I think he had a "plan" in the past that failed, and he never mentally moved on from being the one in control of his fate. The way the characters talk about Dutch before the Blackwater massacre makes him seem a lot more competent.

The in game book "An American Eden" had a large influence on Dutch. If you read it you'll get why he wanted what he did. Later in the game you can find the author and he confesses it's all made up a lot of his experiences.

        Anonymous

pretty much, but being an insatiable narcissist, the best chord Micah struck was appeasing Dutch's ego by complimenting him
At one point he literally comes down to Dutch and calls him "amazing", there's several instances of this in your face ball licking in the game, usually random camp scenes
Dutch was in a small way outplayed by a slightly better sociopath

Dutch wanted loyalty above all, micah was always a dickrider even when the rest started to doubt him.
Micah also saved Dutch’s life once and he probably felt kinship from that as well.

He figured out Arthur was right all along about Micah and went there for revenge, same as John. As for the money, I could never come up with a good reason as the game leaves it up to your imagination. Maybe he was just cutting his life away from everything involving the old gang, Blackwater money included.

would have ardhurs tuberculosis been cured or at least slowed down if he had gotten to tahiti in time?

in ye olden days, people with tb in their lungs would move to warmer and more humid countries to mend it

      Anonymous

No, humidity actually fricks you up and encourages the infection. That's why Arthur's symptoms get so much worse after he gets back from Guarma.
The historical recommendation was to move to warmer and DRIER areas. So if the gang went back west Arthur might have lived longer.

        >That's why Arthur's symptoms get so much worse after he gets back from Guarma.
Isn't it because of untreated fact of being in cold water for some unspecified time?(when he jumped from the shipwreck)

          Anonymous

That added to it. Arthur was living a pretty shitty rough and tumble life that certainly didn't contribute to his health and that's probably why his disease progressed so fast.
