The whole thing is a byproduct of the ending, which Takahashi has stated he did not want but the rest of the team insisted on it, Pneuma was supposed to stay dead but they thought a tragic ending like that would be at odds with the lighter tone of the game, it took him another full game to get his sad ending.

FR made Rex actually a good character when he was so fricking boring in XC2. Seeing him awkwardly begin fathering Glimmer when she doesn't even know who he is was funny.

The only reason Nia is part of the harem is probably because that was Takahashi's actual ship, thus he purposefully left Pyra and Mythra out of 3 and Future Redeemed.

Xenoblade fans can't take criticism. So any of their threads are just mindless circlejerking. For example, I complain about poor framerate and sidequests often just being glorified filler, and people respond by calling me a troony. Do you consider that legitimate discussion?
Shulk had an inkling of something with the revenge desire, but even then they muddied that with the 'It was Zanza making him angry' garbage. Monolith sucks fricking dick at writing characters that have ACTUAL grit to them.

Noah is just Blade's version of Fei so he wins by default, in some ways I even like him better than Fei, he's overall less whiny.
Melia easily outdoes Shulk by actually having an arc.
Matthew is a refreshing change of pace, an honest-to-god Reyn/Lanz-level moron as protagonist.
Addam is useless but very likeable.
Shulk is honestly overrated, out of the entire party only Sharla is more boring and the whole thing really takes a nosedive when Fiora is around and he turns into her lapdog, he's much better in FR.
Rex is the only one I find truly annoying, tough he gets much, MUCH better in FR.
I think the first two have much more notable development, whereas Noah doesn't really change his stance from the beginning of the game until the end. The only thing he finally comes to grips with is using Lucky 7, which is so weird because we know he's killed before so that's not the problem. He's just been killing people ineffieciently with the sheathed sword vs killing them more decisively and quicker with L7.
Great question. I think unironically, all his character development and flaws were foisted over to N, who is ultimately a completely different character.
Noah starts the game being basically the only person who has a problem with the whole >Killing to live, living to kill
Lifestyle, and his belief or point of view is never wrong. I guess you could say he's a microcosm of humanity in the sense that his fear of losing Mio is the type of fear that allowed the Endless Now to happen, but even then, kinda flimsy narrative to build your whole MC around and only acknowledge it once with a single cutscene.
Each mc has a specific concept.
Shulk's is revenge, Rex's is pathological altruism, Noah's is choice.
Shulk starts out wanting revenge, but slowly gives up on it when he realizes that the people of Mechonis have suffered just as much as the people of Bionis have, and instead redirects his energy towards defeating the person who caused it all in the first place.
Rex starts out exceedingly naive and wide-eyed, always thinking about jumping headfirst into a problem without thinking of the consequences, this is followed up nicely with Pyra sharing his wounds, but then they forget about that and instead come up with some moronic shit about him not being able to read Pyra's mind and realize she's actually a suicidal moron.
Noah does not have a problem with killing to live per-se, he has an issue with lack of choice, from the very beginning it is established that his true passion is music, but he cannot dedicate himself to it because he's too busy feeding the flame clock, then throughout the game he meets people who much like him lack the ability to choose, and he wants to create a new world where people can do something other than fight their lives away.
N doesn't factor into that arc, N's part in Noah's story is showing him what would happen if he were to become obsessed with Mio to the point of abandoning everything else.

Because that's the message of the game, to not fear the future, the queens created Origin because they feared what would happen when the worlds interesected, inadvertedly giving rise to Z who then created the Endless Now.
Noah didn't know that restarting the worlds would cause them to merge, but he leapt into that future anyway because the alternative was to become what he hated most, a Moebius, a being who robs others of their choices, and he specifically says he hopes to one day see Mio again through his own devices ("One day, I'll come see you, I promise"); that courage was then rewarded when what was originally supposed to happen happened and the worlds became one.
And he absolutely did want to ask the people of the City for their opinion, that's what his whole speech at the end ("Do I, does anyone have the right to choose?") was about before Monica and Ghondor told him to not mind them, that having the chance to be born in the new world they create was plenty.

I really don't get how people found Rex annoying. He's a pretty damn low key guy. And even when he's being silly, usually someone else is being silly too. Usually he's just silly in response to silly. Very rarely does he make the scene goofy himself.
In the first couple moments we meet Rex, he's a slightly mature 15 year old talking shop with Azurda, pretty chill, and then he gets more thoughtful when talking about the Titan problem.
This gets expanded upon when he's talking with Nia during midnight watch. He's positive and perhaps a bit naive, but thoughtful and chill.
Not much to be done then, I'm afraid. I think you're missing out, and that after a while, not only will you not care about the outfit, he'll actually get a different one, and you could even go as far as unlocking his swim trunks alt.

Why do you assume Shulk has the power to revive people when that is never hinted at? If Shulk had used his power to "revive" Fiora (which he didn't) or heal her (which he also didn't) then maybe you could have a point but that never happens in game.

This isn't that kind of story. That's really all there is to it. Like, not all great stories require a protagonist to sacrifice something. The Xeno stories tend to be more about learning, growing, and opening one's mind to different perspectives.
And to be clear, people die in every single game. Melia loses her dad and brother, Shulk loses Dickson, who was like a father to him, Rex gets Vandam killed, Jin lost Lora, and Rex couldn't help save Jin or Malos. Noah's a weird case since due to the nature of the world and his narrative, it was in a roundabout way, sorta impossible to 'lose' anyone. But the fates of the people of the City and even his own progeny like Ghondor, Matthew and Na'el are in the wind now.
It's just that the games are terribly written because they ALWAYS ass pull a convenient way to make the characters all feel better at the end. Shulk gets god powers, but then doesn't do anything with them other than basic b***h stuff. And what I mention above is pertinent as well.

She made fun of him for getting excited at seeing the Monosaurous, he made her jump talking about mooring line danger. He doesn't back down from a fight, and he's not so soft hearted as to think he can talk everyone over to his side without showing action first.

The whole thing is a byproduct of the ending, which Takahashi has stated he did not want but the rest of the team insisted on it, Pneuma was supposed to stay dead but they thought a tragic ending like that would be at odds with the lighter tone of the game, it took him another full game to get his sad ending.

I think the first two have much more notable development, whereas Noah doesn't really change his stance from the beginning of the game until the end. The only thing he finally comes to grips with is using Lucky 7, which is so weird because we know he's killed before so that's not the problem. Shulk starts out wanting revenge, but slowly gives up on it when he realizes that the people of Mechonis have suffered just as much as the people of Bionis have, and instead redirects his energy towards defeating the person who caused it all in the first place.
Rex starts out exceedingly naive and wide-eyed, always thinking about jumping headfirst into a problem without thinking of the consequences, this is followed up nicely with Pyra sharing his wounds, but then they forget about that and instead come up with some moronic shit about him not being able to read Pyra's mind and realize she's actually a suicidal moron.
Noah does not have a problem with killing to live per-se, he has an issue with lack of choice, from the very beginning it is established that his true passion is music, but he cannot dedicate himself to it because he's too busy feeding the flame clock, then throughout the game he meets people who much like him lack the ability to choose, and he wants to create a new world where people can do something other than fight their lives away.
N doesn't factor into that arc, N's part in Noah's story is showing him what would happen if he were to become obsessed with Mio to the point of abandoning everything else.

Noah didn't know that restarting the worlds would cause them to merge, but he leapt into that future anyway because the alternative was to become what he hated most, a Moebius, a being who robs others of their choices, and he specifically says he hopes to one day see Mio again through his own devices ("One day, I'll come see you, I promise"); that courage was then rewarded when what was originally supposed to happen happened and the worlds became one.
And he absolutely did want to ask the people of the City for their opinion, that's what his whole speech at the end ("Do I, does anyone have the right to choose?") was about before Monica and Ghondor told him to not mind them, that having the chance to be born in the new world they create was plenty.

XC2 maybe but 1 and 3 have about an average amount for any JRPG. Except that one part where everyone got captured on 3 with a literal 40 minute cutscene, THAT was a little much.

None of it did happen, because they still got their happy ending without earning it, and not even a few seconds after each NPC's death, the characters basically stop caring about them. If they did car, Mumkhar, Egil and Dickson wouldn't have gotten their sappy redemption arcs.
This isn't that kind of story. That's really all there is to it. Like, not all great stories require a protagonist to sacrifice something. The Xeno stories tend to be more about learning, growing, and opening one's mind to different perspectives.
And to be clear, people die in every single game. Melia loses her dad and brother, Shulk loses Dickson, who was like a father to him, Rex gets Vandam killed, Jin lost Lora, and Rex couldn't help save Jin or Malos. Noah's a weird case since due to the nature of the world and his narrative, it was in a roundabout way, sorta impossible to 'lose' anyone. But the fates of the people of the City and even his own progeny like Ghondor, Matthew and Na'el are in the wind now.
Yet a sacrifice was made.

He's young and optimistic. That's the big draw for me. He believes in Elysium when no one else does partly because it sounds like this amazing fantasy land, but also because it sounds like the solution to everyone's problems.
He's cheeky. If someone talks shit to him, he doesn't just take it or offer some boring platitude, he talks it right back. Nia was giving him shit when they met, he gave it right back. She made fun of him for getting excited at seeing the Monosaurous, he made her jump talking about mooring line danger. He doesn't back down from a fight, and he's not so soft hearted as to think he can talk everyone over to his side without showing action first.
He's confident to a fault, and it's an endearing flaw. He thinks because he's got Pyra's power, he's unstoppable, and as he learns that there are limits, it lets him grow and understand her better.
