arcade is the only acceptable emulation because the real hardware is like $3000 per game

        This is mostly true.

The board for CPS3 is really expensive.

Because of the simple fact that emulation is just that; emulation attempting to be the real thing without being that. Also, screen and resolutions that play a big part.

I dare to say, as someone who can't play on emulation anymore (unless complete poorgay), playing emulation through a console itself feels less off than emulation where it originated from. Similar case with manipulated re-released roms. Also this

Yes you should switch to Snes9x. ZSnes is not a very accurate emulator. It worked fine if you just wanted to play something, but the sound is all fricked up and often the graphics are not displayed properly. It may have soul, but the program itself is painfully outdated.

Emulation is more soulful than just hoarding old hardware and games. Any basic moron can go online and pay $1,000 for a console and a dozen games they'll never play. True connoisseurs explore the web, finding the best emulators for them, comparing different revisions of games, looking into hacks and patches, tweaking their settings to get them just right. They genuinely care, at least to some degree, about what they're doing.

I think the main thing is that you're not playing at the same framerate you would on a 60Hz TV. Your brain reacts to that timing difference.

The audio is also different. People find it hard to believe that back in the day sound was so hard to compress it wasn't Instead composers would write music for the system to reproduce with virtual instruments. These arrangements were known as soundfonts, and no two brands used the same one. This makes it outrageously difficult to get the real experience from old PC games, but in the case of game consoles you just have to worry about the sound chip in the console.

Finally you're probably aren't playing it in a more relaxed setting. I played most of my videogames sitting in a couch on a large TV. Emulators are usually played at a computer inside a window (old games have really small native resolution).

      Anonymous

For me the desk IS the relaxed setting. Consoles are a pain because I need a different device to do something my PC is able to do by itself.
