If this game's combat was like 20% better than it is, it'd be a masterpiece. As it is, it's just a very good time capsule of the late 90's/early 2000's. No other game has an atmosphere like it.
Offline MMO is a niche genre and IMOQ was the only series that was able to encapsulate that 90's feel
GU is...meh, at some point you forget it's a videogame world with real people playing avatars and starts feeling more like a generic fantasy world
and SAO is animay shit
i'll try Crosscode one day but i've heard it's about people playing with remote-controlled robots on an alien world
>i can enjoy a game purely on the unique atmosphere and setting it creates for me. i don't mind subpar gameplay if i get a unique experience out of the game
play imoq >if the core combat of a game isn't fun then i won't enjoy it
don't play imoq
How good were these exactly? I bought all four of the originals but only beat 3 before I stopped playing, I never finished it. I've been meaning to go through it again. But are the sequels good?
Also this is one of my favorite vidya tracks. This makes me think of a sunny summer field next to my house where I first played the game.
Xenoblade is in my opinion the best example of offline MMO combat, but we really need something like .hack again. A game where you play as a person playing an MMO. It's a great concept, something akin to a story of SAO being trapped inside of a game would be a spectacular premise. I really don't know why no one has tried it, it writes itself.
I wish Fragment had SLIGHTLY better combat, they were so close to a perfect game. The gameplay in IMOQ is even worse than fragz but it is basically a different type of experience at that point, more of a real time JRPG than a dungeon crawler/treasure looting game.
One of the best things about the .hack games is reading the news articles and forum posts on your browser and seeing all the fricked up shit going on outside the MMO. I love the one article where a guy accidentally breaks his phone and had so much functionality tied into it that he can't even unlock his front door without it.
I think the closest we'll get nowadays to an actual Dot Hack MMO outside of the PS2 MMO that never got released internationally is PSO 1 and 2. As for offline MMOs, really only a few games of note have tried it, FF12, the Xenoblade series, and Last Story. Iirc, nobody liked FF12, Xenoblade almost ended up as just another obscure Wii title because it came out so late into its lifespan and it was only until Shulk got into Smash that it exploded in popularity while Last Story DID become just another obscure Wii title. So I mean, there's only like 1 franchise really do it these days to my knowledge. I don't think FF is ever going back to turn-based combat but I do think the offline mmo approach is the best way to appease both sides of real time action vs turn-based
>As for offline MMOs, really only a few games of note have tried it, FF12, the Xenoblade series, and Last Story.
Western example, but Kingdoms of Amalur.
I remember in G.U. one of these were being advertised again and it listed specs, including a 1440x900 display. CC2 had excellent foresight but that advanced technology resolution didn't age very well.
I love .hack and XBC and FF12. .hack really needs another entry. I always ahd teh idea of making it co-op and you and two of the boys pick a charcter in the party to play as and run through the dungeons together, trying out phrases to finds secret levels. getting loot, while going through the story, Kinda like secret of mana. It would also open up the level design add 2 person puzzles, make combat harder with people having to pull agro and heal and buff. make it co-oop offline mmo pretty much.
While playing Xenoblade 2 I thought the way the world was set up and combat would be really good in the .hack universe.
The co-op is basically PSO as well so I am surprised it hasn't been tried. Even if you want to go full try hard, VR is basically at the point it was in universe.
ALL mmos have garbage gameplay, the only saving grace is the fact you get to interact with other people
A single player MMO is the worst of both worlds, basically tailor made for a special kind of shit-eating autist
It's an RPG about people set in a world where the internet evolved very differently and they're playing an MMO. If you want to play an MMO just go play a MMO.
I tried the first game, I really loved it but got bored after a few hours and dropped it. It's an interesting game but the combat and the dungeons are really bad.
It's serviceable but definitely very barebones. For what it was though it definitely gave the feeling of playing an MMO, it just needed more systems of customizations such as being able to pick your class, more variety in mission types, a fleshed out class system instead of being what weapons you can equip, etc. It still has so much soul though.
Pretty casual game, also a scam that makes you buy four games instead of one. I only paid the first one full price when it was released but then I was disappointed.
I played and finished Infection but had a VERY hard time getting started with Mutation since I was underleveled and couldn't do the story or the side story stuff so I kinda gave up.
But I started .hack GU vol1 and finished it (On vol 2 right now) and the upgrade on the gameplay is really so much better.
But I feel like Infection did the town and the "players" walking around much better than GU vol 1.
Also Infection was really "free" when it came to let you do what you want (sometimes too much tho since I felt like I didn't know what to do to trigger the next part), meanwhile tho in rebirth you feel like the story never stop, it always show you what/where to go next, like you actually had to stop yourself for doing the quest on the quest board for example, while the story really never fricking stop.
Also, while I felt like Infection final boss was a LOOOOOOT fricking harder than Rebirth final boss even tho I was a bit underleveled for both fight.
Overall tho I'm really enjoying Vol2 (it started really strongly) and didn't feel the massive wall that I had while starting Mutation and I can't wait to play the next parts. I'm also trying to avoid any spoilers.
OG HACK is one of the biggest scams ever. >take 1 full game >cut it into 4 parts >release them over the course of a year >$60 each >more expensive than the PS2 hardware in 2003
And it's a barebones piece of shit action RPG with insane asset reuse and random dungeons. Wasn't worth playing for free back in 2003/4, isn't worth it now. It should be remembered as a scam and nothing more, but zoomies are oblivious.

I just remember playing it as a kid and really trying very hard to love it.
Playable character shouldn't have been a gay twin blade

Is IMOQ worth emulating or should I just play the Steam remaster?
>i can enjoy a game purely on the unique atmosphere and setting it creates for me. i don't mind subpar gameplay if i get a unique experience out of the game
play imoq
>if the core combat of a game isn't fun then i won't enjoy it

This, pretty much. The combat in the steam seems to be much much easier than the initial PS2 release.
If you're talking about Last Recode then yeah, they made the game easier.
It's totally different game
the remaster is based on the GU series not the IMOQ series

I do, but no game gets it quite right.
>but no game gets it quite right
But Xenoblade exists
I do agree that those probably do the best job. Really didn’t like 2, though.

.hack's world, real world, seems like a fricking dystopia

>tfw shit like that is unironically happening in current year
man...
I think Solatorobo has been theorized to be in the same universe because of deep lore shit I dont understand so it gets even shittier

Anyone have an idiots guide on how to play the MMO version?
Yeah I found shit on this im passsing out and nodding off ill post it tomkrowd

I hate the industry

should a .hack//mmorpg should be made?
To answer my own question, Id say yes.
ALL mmos have garbage gameplay, the only saving grace is the fact you get to interact with other people

Dropped

Reminder .hack died for this shit
>Why don't you like offline MMO?
because i my pc can't run it....
I want to play IMOQ so much
PC port when

You're not wrong but there's still a certain charm to the game, particularly audio effects
