Last time I had to do any extra work to get a game working, it was just a matter of renaming a file and running protontricks commands found on ProtonDB. The game in question also runs like ass on Windows anyway because it's a badly made port of a console game. The only reason I'd use Windows at this point is to play games that aren't possible to play on Linux, and... well, I'm sorry but, I just don't want to play Fortnite etc., and I never did, and I never will.

need wine for every mod manager, sometimes even specific patches

The top part is instructions on how to change your proton version in steam, that has nothing to do with modding. The second part you shouldn't do, if you want to install MO2 for a non-Steam game you would install it using Lutris after installing the game using the windows binary here:

                https://github.com/ModOrganizer2/modorganizer/releases/tag/v2.4.4

Are you familiar with using Lutris for non-Steam games?

you need to cap fps in gta4 because it shits the bed when you get more than, say 60-75fps. I launched it and it initially had 4 digits fps. game was "running" switching between everything happening at 3x speed or 0.25x speed and everything flashing, rerendering and other crazy shit.

We still played other games on occasion and he would join, but we tend to get obsessed with one or two games for months at a time and mostly gather to play those.
That's not the elitist part, the elitist part is him talking up linux to high heavens while making snide remarks about people who use other operating systems. There came a point where he would start and someone would basically say "ok buddy, we get it" like clockwork

But he could have, by using Windows. At most, he wanted to play the game less than he wanted to use Linux. "Linux users can't _______" is always a dumb take. Most Linux users dual boot, and even your turbo autist friend was making a choice.

MacOS doesn't support VSTs (officially), the vast majority of music tools are Windows. That said, Logic is a decent DAW if you already use a Mac as your main computer.

Reaper is good but yeah you'll struggle getting most plugins to work at all on Linux, and the ones you'll get working come with a caveat such as worse latency, that shit doesn't fly when making music. There's a reason very, very few producers bother with Linux at all.

arch has every piece of software you could want and has the latest packages, usually.
there are other options but mine was arch for 2 years and I don't regret a thing.
Use the archinstall command if you don't want to install it the hard way.

Don't listen to him. If you want Arch but without the hassle just use EndeavourOS. Nobara also has a bunch of gaming related kernel tweaks and patches out of the box.

Archinstall has stock DE options for newbies, what's so hassle about it?
I must admit, Endeavour is a good option as well, though.

EOS is generally just easier since its an installer and not an install script. And honestly part of the charm of Arch is learning how Linux works through its manual install.
I'm just glad that EOS replaced Manjaro as the easy mode Arch.

I'm gonna say it, but people whining about manjaro are dumb.

Its not just that. They have been caught not updating security certificates and for straight up breaking the AUR.

Holding back packages is dumb, especially given if you install shit from the AUR (the main reason to use Arch).

other than that i would dump shitdows like in 0.001 sec.
            right now im using both

I have it locked at 300fps on every game using GOverlay which is like a GUI for mangohud.
            >i want use dlss framegeneration
Why? It is on 5 games and it runs like shit on 3, it is a way to FOMO so you upgrade every 2 years.
            >modded games
It is possible in almost every game. Some with complicated exes and shit probably won't work? But most should be ok.

OP creating this dedicated OS shitposting thread isn't really analogous to that at all because you could just choose not to click on it.
Meanwhile, the Linux threads that just start with a discussion prompt for Linux gamers (e.g. https://arch.b4k.co/v/thread/657892212), with absolutely no invitation to Windows babies, still get immediately flooded with angry Windows babies.

            Anonymous

It's all shitposting. Both this thread and the one you linked.
There is zero reason to explicitly point out what OS you are using when gaming, especially not in the opening post - besides for the sake of inciting a flamewar, which is exactly what the OP wants when they make such a thread.

              Anonymous

That's what the OP of this thread wanted, but the other one was just a normal thread about Linux gaming, a valid topic for discussion on a gaming board. It can't be both "there's no reason to mention the OS" and also "Linux gaming requires more tinkering" at the same time, you know. And it's the latter, even if Linux newbies will screech at me for saying so. People get help running games in those threads, between waves of butthurt spamming from Windows babies.

The entire thread was shitposts and anons troubleshooting, with the odd singular post of what an anon was playing with zero replies. Nobody was discussing games in that thread is my point, it was Ganker-tier troubleshooting mixed with Ganker-tier "quality" shitposting. You would genuinely be better off making a Linux gaming on Ganker rather than here.

                Anonymous

troubleshooting is fine as long as it's about videogames, however. shitposting is a waste of time where nobody gains anything

                Anonymous

Thing is, there's a general on /vg/ for Linux gaming that (as far as /vg/ goes) is reasonably on-topic with FAR less shitposting than Ganker, so the only reason anyone would make a Linux thread on Ganker instead is if they want the shitposts spat back at them.

is the only place to have a Linux gaming thread without "oh nooo, I entered this thread about a topic I don't like, how could this happen to me??" dipshits trying to get the discussion banished to another board. Any time you mention a platform it encourages a flamewar. The OP of this thread absolutely wanted and expected that, but you could give benefit of the doubt about other Linux gaming threads. Regardless, if you make a PlayStation, Nintendo, or Xbox thread on Ganker you will get shitposts and consolewars in the replies. The same applies if you make a thread explicitly about Linux or Windows. In my opinion, it's better to make threads directly about a game or specific gaming peripheral, rather than make a thread about a platform - threads about computer operation systems specifically belong more on Ganker than Ganker anyway.

Which is why the most commonly used GNU/Linux distros today are ChromeOS, and SteamOS. Distributions which greatly minimize or entirely eliminate the need to use a command line interface, and which most importantly are pre-installed on hardware designed to run them.

The fact that Microsoft has had to make command lines, including a Linux command line a major feature of modern Windows releases should tell you that it is an invaluable tool for a lot of advanced system management and software development tasks.

I got used to flatpaks, but here is an archive format aka .tar
Russian dude, the author of that torrent, typed this as (I think) an instruction:

        Уcтaнoвкa

        2. Зaпycтить cкpипт sh в диpeктopии игpы:

looks like you just extract the tar and run the included script
you don't need the terminal to extract it, you should be able to open it with archive manager same as you would a zip or rar
if for whatever reason that doesn't work then do use that provided tar command
once it's extracted you run start.sh and presumably the game launches from there

The basics, they're afraid of change, of needing to learn something new.
Windows is a lot less dominant now than it was 10 or 20 years ago, and even if they weren't around back then they have a sense that it isn't the same as it was.

Today there is also a very real possibility that Microsoft will bow out of the consumer market in the foreseeable future with Xbox being spun out to a games as a service company, Windows for consumers being left to rot, and Microsoft corporate moving to only support their paying business customers.

        >Windows is a lot less dominant now than it was 10 or 20 years ago,
Hell no. Windows will reign forever unless as long as the desktop/laptop come with Windows by default.

          Anonymous

Desktops/Laptops went from being basically the only thing you could buy, to being outnumbered by devices running mainstream friendly UNIX based OSes.
Almost all of GNU/Linux's recent gains have come from OEMs selling laptops and gaming PCs with mainstream friendly distributions pre-installed.

Home desktop is becoming an unprofitable niche market. Microsoft could follow the example of so many other companies in the past, give up on the consumer market and go enterprise-only for OSes.
They don't need to provide you with an OS to pirate to play games you didn't pay for. As they've said, they'd be perfectly happy simply making you pay a subscription fee to play their games on other platforms.

i think people go into the game with the wrong expectations primarily
it's 40k, but it's not a bolter porn game. there's no orks or space marines, and you're just a human dude fighting almost exclusively other human dudes. what it really is, under the surface, is a tighter version of EYE with a side of doom eternal, and if you know what's good in EYE then you'll be right at home.
it is however fair to complain that the game is riddled with technical problems. not as bad as EYE could get with shit like not getting the gate spells at the end of the campaign sometimes, but i did once get clipped out of the world and stuck in a death spiral, and the UI is really bad, especially in regards to weapon selection. performance is spotty in places (and that's not a linux thing, windows players and reviews corroborate this), the final map was particularly bad but i also had settings maxed and didn't bother turning anything down to see if it helped.
still, it's a really fun game and i regret not playing it sooner. the only thing it really leaves me wanting for is co-op, but having also played deathwing recently i can understand why they opted not to bother this time. the netcode in that game was fickle at best, nasty desyncs that pretty much rendered the game unplayable for minutes at a time.

Just tossing my worthless two cents in, I played Necromunda and came out the other side thinking the only good thing about it was the setpieces.
It's horribly buggy (I got softlocked on three separate occasions), it wants to be 2016 DOOM but ends up feeling like a cheapo copy, it's just kind of an all-around mess of a game that does nothing but environments particularly well

                Anonymous

that's fair, it's not nearly as tight a game as doom 2016/eternal. but i feel it does evoke the same balls to the wall action that EYE could on high difficulty settings with a strong character, with relative improvements across the board. way less grinding, more effective enemies (without resorting to oneshots) with better variety, useless stuff trimmed and the good shit more readily available. you can pretty much start teleporting into dudes and sniping with 40-round drum mag shotguns out of the gate.

I'm not sure I can grief be your supposed experience when every single thing you were actually specific about are things that don't require the terminal

I get that sometimes people say things that aren't true on the internet. I swear to you, I tried Arch, Ubuntu, and Mint. On all three of these I had to use their command line interface multiple times. If your just planning on watching videos on youtube, or shitposting on Ganker you can get away with never touching it on Ubuntu assuming you have the right kind of graphic card.

On all three of these, I had to use command line to get firestorm working. All three of these required some update for something to get my games from GOG to work. Getting emulators to work all required me to make a exe to run a command. Driver updates for new games? Command line. It's a nuisance. It hasn't been fixed, I doubt it'll be fixed because people like you pretend that it's not very common.

Don't pretend like you aren't looking up instructions anytime you want to get something new working. It's just not worth the trouble when I'm not getting any benefit.

Anon Ubuntu and mint come with graphical interfaces for installing drivers and packages in general, just because you clicked on the first guide you found which generalized instructions by giving you terminal commands didn't mean you had to fit those things. Arch expected you to configure the system yourself and read the wiki so no shit it's going to require using the terminal

Kid, you need a life lesson here. Computers are complicated, and have been around for a long time. You don't have the time to be checking multiple systems over decades, and every weird little program on every piece of hardware. If somebody tells you "I did this, and had to do this to get it working." Unless you did the same thing at around the same time, don't insult the guy, and say they were wrong, because you have no idea.

You're so wrong on this topic, that It's still the case that you have to run command line on Ubuntu to get this working on any hardware. PSX2 still requires you to use command line to get it running on Linux. Omikron The Nomad Soul if you want to use the GoG version, which is the only one that works properly on Linux at all, requires you to use command line. OpenRCT2 requires you to use command line still.

I could go on about the number of other programs I had to use command line to get working, and the weird little problems I had, but it'd be pointless. You don't know what you're talking about, and you're shilling this shit for nothing.

All of these distributions that I'm aware of work by having the developer of whatever you are trying to download personally opt to make some account with the distribution on their own little app store. Then figuring out how to make a installer for their particular version. Then you have to keep a button on your website that works with their little app store, hoping that doesn't break. Barely anybody bothers, it's to much trouble. Steam can't be fricked to keep a huge number of it's games working properly on windows, let alone however many linux distributions.

Huge amounts of stuff you just can't run at all on Linux, you'll never see Martian Gothic running on Linux. Nobody even has the capabilities to get it running on Linux as far as I'm aware. Many old games you're emulating windows to run.

                Doesn't require the terminal.
                I used them both.

And most software that's packages for x distribution is packages by distro maintainers, the developers aren't "opting to make an account with the distribution on their own little app store", there also isn't any need for any websites whatsoever.

Also, the big majority of emulators have native versions do you wouldn't even be running an "exe". The only exceptions I can think of are cxbox (but Xemu is better anyway), xenia (no alternative), and cemu (has a native version now but might not have had one when you used Linux). They're both in the Ubuntu repositories, pcsx2 is in the universe repository which you can enable without using the terminal https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/how-to-enable-universe-repository-in-ubuntu/ or you can go the "windows way" and just download the appimage in their website and double click it, again no terminal required

See, this is the problem with Linux. I say "Dude I can't get the applications I want on any of these three." some smug jackass comes along, and goes.
                >Ah, but on this other distribution you can get one of them!
Why would I have five different partitions for four linux distributions that I have to switch between to run things, when I could just use windows?

The problem is that it's a fricking hassle, you don't get it, this is why Linux will never catch up. You stick your fingers in your ears, and ignore that people have to look up a guide to get shit running, and half the time the solution is to run a emulator for windows. unless the developers are still around to make it work on your particular version.

                >Omikron, openrct2
Not emulators, and openrct2 doesn't require the terminal
                >Pcsx2
                Doesn't require the terminal.
                I used them both.

And most software that's packages for x distribution is packages by distro maintainers, the developers aren't "opting to make an account with the distribution on their own little app store", there also isn't any need for any websites whatsoever.

I literally posted the fricking link. Omicron literally doesn't run at all on Linux, and never will. Most abandonware is like that.

This is bait, I know it.

                Stop making shit up.
                .

                Easy!

I didn't "Mess up" by wanting to use a program without having to emulate a second operating system that I could just run natively, or wanting my car to be faster. You're not asking people to "Learn to drive" you're asking people to need to look up a instructional any time they want to take their car to a new destination. You never "Learn to drive" with Linux. Stop pretending like you're not looking shit up most of the time you want to install something.

Nice, but I didn't say anything about 'not looking up stuff'...

What I actually am saying with the Comparison, is that if you put in the Work you can get everywhere you can get with Windows.

It's not Plug and Play, it's not Easy in Comparison, but you can do it if you wish.

Again, with a kit car, you eventually have a functioning car. You never have that with Linux. If by "Putting in the work" you mean "Having persistent slower user experience, for a product that's missing functionality, and regularly resorts to just running windows."

                >Why would I have five different partitions for four linux distributions
That's your idea, not mine. I only picked one distro to dual boot into alongside my windows 7 and it's worked out well. Having modern hardware helps, I think it gets tricky if you have GPUs older than Pascal.

See, all of these little problems of this thing, and that thing not working on this version add up to a mess.

Throwing more power so you can emulate windows to emulate the PS2 is not a solution. Just skip the middleman, and run windows.

                >Have to fallback to the not emulator
I already showed you how you can install them without using the terminal and another guy showed a pic of the graphic installer showing the programs as well. Assuming the thread is still up after I sleep I'll try omikron

No, I literally linked it to you moron. You just said "Everything works lol" this is why your operating system is shit, and will remain shit. You pretend shit is working that isn't, and you don't have any idea about it working.

I believe most of the games he mentioned are available in myabandonware, I remember somebody trying old games from there thru bottles and plain wine and it just worked. Pic related.

See, I get that I could buy a beefier gpu and cpu to run a windows emulator on linux, but why would someone do that when they can more quickly just click the exe on windows, using less power.

If people could just own up to, admit, and learn from their mistakes, the world would be a more peaceful place.

It's not a "Mistake" to reject using a different operating system so I can run windows in it.

Yeah, that's the short version. If you are really into playing with command line, and are okay with worse performance, and things needing fixed all the time, use Linux.

So yeah, most casual users want stuff to work easily. Most hardcore users want things to work efficiently, and better functionality. Almost everyone wants lower costs. Threads over.

I never had to do what you did, jumping around various distros to try them out. I simply picked up Nobara, installed it, and played games. Granted, your abandonware games will also have problems on modern windows e.g. you can't run age of mythology discs on windows 10 you need the redefinition version. This is also why I don't throw out my old computers, I love being able to play Bow and Arrow on old hardware.

there are either applications whose advertised features are full-on unusable and broken, or long-standing defects that the devs ignore with "cannot reproduce lawl"

Linux is great for mini servers and iot stuff that you want to perform a task automatically without ever touching. Easy to get remote shit like ssh sftp and vnc setup.
But it sucks for everyday general purpose use. Its shocking just how shit the UI and all of the desktop options are. Barely improved in the last 10 years.
The community in general fricking sucks, makes me so glad i dont work on open source shit:
    >Plagued by presumptuous midwit wannabe politicians who assume everyones use case and protect them from themselves. "Nooo you're not allowed to run our app as root, noooo you're not allowed to just ignore security certificates your smart fridge could get hacked and stolen!!!"
    >Have to actually be a software dev to use half the shit because everyone has their own fricked up hot take on software morality. "So, like we don't believe in publishing our Linux build binaries because of past drama and nobody else is allowed to either.... If you want to use our shit you need to pull the souce from git, install 10Gb worth of build dependencies and spend the rest of the day fricking around with it."
    >Same dev will release a windows installer of the same software that just works.
    >Assuming you do go down the rabbit hole of trying to get the shit working on linux there will always be some unforeseen issue because your setup is slightly different from the devs. The build will fail because you have a newer version of a dependency, and the old one cant be pulled down because it clashes with other libraries on your system. So you'll be sitting there staring at your screen wondering whether you should format your whole system to match what the dev had or go in and build a custom version of the dependency merging the shit you need from each version. If you can do that you could literally just get a job doing it as a mid level software dev and make 100k+

And they actually think normies who struggle to change their wifi name are going to do this all this.

I mean to think that the Terminal is a Form of Magic is moronic on your Part...

All the proof you need right here. Who gives a flying frick what OS people use? I've run linux in the past successfully and I got tired of having to tinker with it. Linux is not fricking videogames these threads should be banned
The terminal is quite handy and I actually miss some things about linux but you can frick right off with your holier than thou attitude

          Holier than thou?
You can absolutely use Linux to Game, but you have to set it up right.
That's the Topic, if you don't use Linux to Game you don't want to learn to set it up.
It's you that injects the Moral Superiority Narrative.

Are you not browsing this thread. Linux gays are insufferable and ridicule anyone not using linux

            >Who gives a flying frick what OS people use?
Mentally disturbed wintards tell people games don't work on linux when they do, people need to know that they are wrong so they know they can leave windows and be happy. The people that like windows should stay, but most people don't like windows, they need to know there is an alternative.

All the more reason linux threads should not be on Ganker

              No I don't ridicule people.
I am here to read Opinions.
You don't have to use Linux, but there is a difference between not wanting to use Linux and saying it cannot be used for Gaming

Honestly I'm surprised how well a lot of games work on Linux now (or at least the Steam Deck)
Even got old ass foreign games to work without an issue when it ran into issues on Windows
There's only one example of a game that I had a lot of trouble to get working and had to do a annoying workaround but eh you can't win em all

I just want to say that if you showed the terminal as IRL voodoo magic sorcery to Black folk they would use it more. Black folk love their magic shit or you wouldn't be getting stories out of Africa about shamans being arrested.

I did switch to linux, only thing I miss about windows is the mouse feel. Never got it to feel the same.

Linux mouse driver feels too sensitive and feels off for some reason

Check if your mouse is compatible with piper software, I use piper for my mouse.

Your desktop environment should have a setting for mouse acceleration, did you check that?

I need to get it to the same default as windows. So whatever the DPI/sensitivity is when you set the mouse sensitivity to max in windows 10.

Seems there's no info online on the exact DPI

I use both windows and linux
honestly the ratio of trying to fix some stupid bullshit in windows and linux is about equal
linux at least has the advantage of most of the info being in one forum whereas windows info is more spread out and will be answered by some fricking pajeet that marks the answer as "just reinstall windows bro"
i do think anyone that b***hes about terminal is gay and has a typing speed below 20 WPM
