Never understood the complaints about its combat.
It's a great game, maybe a bit outdated now, but did some nice things back then.

Honestly I like the combat. I like the different choices I can make to counter someone else's army. The combat is really good compared to most 4x games. I think the problem is that it doesn't do a great job of showing the player how to use it.

The combat is bad as far as tactical battles go, and worse, the autoresolve is also bad at it, so you're forced to play it yourself if you don't want to needlessly lose units.

I really enjoy EL combat. I think it's as good as age of wonders and way better than civ.

while I prefer the ES2 combat for beeing automated by design I agree with this anon

I agree. I didn't like the combat at first because I didn't understand it. Once I understood the combat system I realized it has some of the best combat ever made in a 4x. The devs could have made it easier to understand, though, like with better tooltips and in game guides.

Calling it the best combat ever made is a bit much but I agree that once you figure out how to command movement separate from attacks it becomes pretty fun to manage albeit still very simple.

I complain about garbo combat and awful unit variety. Did it fix those? It'd be almost a 10/10 for me if those were fixed.

      >unit variety
i disliked that first too but didnt mind when i realized that EL took different approach, units stay visually the same and item setup is what matters and completely changes their strength

is there even a 4X game which has that besides maybe Shadow Empire ?

  9. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

Was it polarizing? I thought the people that liked it enough to bother talking about it mostly gave it credit for being a 4X that tried something different and not being a Civ clone. I tried it, thought it sucked, but wouldn't bother invading a Endless fan thread just to say so, just like most people I would imagine.

I got like 50 hours out of it before realizing I'm just doing the same thing over and over and dropping it.
I hated the quests and events, felt like busywork distractions from the main gameplay. But if you focused only on the main gameplay, you soon realized it's just a simplistic Civ clone with very little to do.
Also most of the DLC made the game worse instead of better, introducing a gimmick that doesn't really mesh with the existing mechanics, just a new thing you could do for the sake of doing it, and a faction focused around said gimmick. It just pissed you off when you got its heroes offered because they usually sucked at generic city improvement.

You don't get the game, dude. It's not even remotely a civ clone. The quests and stuff are what make the game what it is.

The fight happens at the same spot though, with all the terrain taken into account.
I have yet to see a reason for why the combat is supposed to be bad.

Because it has the tactical depth of Civ combat while insisting on fights being separate instances and asking you to manually control like 18 stacks.

I can't just mindlessly mash doomstacks into eachother so I hate it!

I actually can with the autoresolve, it's just so bad at the combat that if I want to save units I have to play it manually. It's still less tedious to just build decisively OP armies and autoresolve anyway.

This right here. EL changed 4x games. That anon has no clue what he's talking about. Everyone has different tastes and it's fine to not like something, but he clearly doesn't understand the combat at all. It's way more complex than civ combat, like an order of magnitude more complex. It's not even remotely similar. I'd even go as far as to say EL combat has more depth than age of wonders combat, and I like AoW.

Both of you are moronic to the core. AoW unit abilities alone are far more complex and in-depth than anything in EL not to mention the amount of spell-casting.

                Anonymous

Age of wonders 3 is not that complex, EL has exponential growth of your empire that you have to manage. Age of wonders is much more linear and clear, so it's easier to grasp the use of things.

This but the other way around. You can win EL with a single city and 1 or 2 stacks of units while autoresolving everything.

                Anonymous

You can do the same in Age of wonders under the right conditions (like goblin phantasmal warrior spam in a 1v1). Hell the autoresolve is even better in age of wonders.

There are still more variables you have to manage in Endless Legend. You can enjoy both games even.

It's too comfy to the point of being boring. I played two campaigns and nothing was fricking happening. I don't find it's gameplay enjoyable.
In general Endless games are too gamey and balanced around multiplayer, but the only reason to play them is for lore, aesthetics and art. But this singleplayer aspect is underwhelming because of focus on gamey 4x design. They should have gone wild with quests, events and stories for each factions that would have massive consequences for player and frick the balance. I'd welcome dedicated campaigns on a premade maps for every faction too.

Also inability to play a big campaign with all factions in one game is insanely annoying. Game is too small scale.

Multiplayer that doesn't fricking work. I've never made it through a ES2 game. Can barely even get to midgame without constant desyncs and end turn bugs.

Yes, but have you tried not being moronic? Desync issues aren't related to where you are. It's not like you're matchmaking in a Europe COD server from Australia or something. The netcode is just fricking fricked.

Anyone remember when EL 2 was mentioned in the Nvidia leak? I can't help but have hope it's legit since so many other games were confirmed and I can't imagine someone at Nvidia using Endless Legend 2 as a placeholder. The only thing I'd even want from a sequel aside from the obvious "more factions + quests" is making combat true turn based instead of that weird planning and letting the AI decide if it can't follow exactly what you set, an auto upgrade equipment button, and letting you choose which design to retrofit regarding same unit types. Obviously add some kind of timer or exponentially increase the cost on the more extreme unit changes so you can't just swap your army to the perfect counter the turn before the opponent arrives at your city, but if I really wanted to I could edit the design of my units at the city, retrofit those units, then manually undo all of my changes back in the designer so it'd just make things easier. Hell if they made those changes and didn't even add any new factions I'd probably buy EL 2 day one.

honestly yeah I'd be pretty happy if they made an EL2 and used the Humankind combat. More quests and busted shit, too. Hell make singleplayer only quests where crazy unique shit happens that is disabled in mp if they care that much about balance
