Because the type of RAM the N64 uses (RDRAM) isn't manufactured anymore by anyone. You can't make more expansion paks with currently available hardware and no hobbyiest group has the buying power it takes to get chinks to restart production on ancient tech that has litterally no use outside of a hardware addon for one 25 year old console.

The only way to get new ram into an N64 would be to mod it to use something else, but that would be either an absurdly impractical and involved mod or outright impossible, and the kind of thing people would only start looking into if the quantity of working expansion paks in the world reached 3 digits in the year 2120 and people did it out of abject desperation.

That's actually a pretty explanation, thank you.

      >RDRAM

You mean that shit that only the early Pentium 4s ever seemed to use? My dad had a PC that ran on RDRAM.

          No it was rambus.
Intel rolled the dice on that and lost big fricking time.

There were knockoffs back in the day. I'm sure some still exist. As for a modern knockoff, it's archaic technology that no one knows how to make anymore.

There was a good amount of clones when the N64 was still being made, by Pelican, Interact, Ground Zero etc. I think Yobo and Retro Bit were some of the only ones that bothered to make new ones in the late 2000s/early 2010s but are also both out of print now.

Seems like there's a good number of listings for expansion paks on there, so why haven't they became available for individual sale on the Aliexpress site, could it just be that no sellers are buying them or could they just be junk?

    >2003
    >dreamcast is dead
    >some guy I know has a N64 with 2 controllers and a bunch of games
    >tell him I'd trade my DC for his N64
    >he smirks as he thinks he's getting the long end of the stick
    >I give him my Dreamcast with 1 controller and 2 games: sonic adventure and mdk2
    >he gives me his N64 with the Expansion pak, 4 controllers and Mario Party, Excitebike, Road Rash , Destruction Derby, Mission Impossible, Goldeneye and Smash Bros.
    >fastforward to 2021
    >the expansion pak alone is worth about the same as a dreamcast
