Sadly true. Outside Nintendo, Japan is basically dead. The few big publishers (capcom/square etc) are focusing on making games that appeal to a global audience. IE lots of cutscenes and homogenised, generic gameplay.

We're not the target audience anymore. It's more profitable to make shallow cinematic movies than "gamey" games. A gamey game can only be enjoyed by gamers. A cinematic movie can be enjoyed by shitters who struggle to remember where the buttons are on a gamepad.

You have two sides of a coin with Diablo Immortal, a game that is a standout commercial success despite everyone unanimously agreeing it almost epitomises everything wrong with the industry, and then you have Babylon's Fall, the same issue but it's a commercial AND critical failure and it doesn't do a dent to SE because they have their infinite money making machine in XIV, meaning they have no incentive to do anything but just throw scummy ideas at the wall and see what sticks in hopes of creating a second cashcow.
