They absolutely matter to Nintendo, lack of sales are the reason they let their franchises rot while fans spend decades begging them to throw them a bone.

it really wasn't it was normal for games to control differently
only as of 360 and after everything controls the same which yeah modern games objectively control like shit because they only focus on movement and automate everything
old games simply didn't have this problem because you adjusted to them rather than automating everything

Shit tier controls are the reason why I never completed Prime.
Prime has an ancient N64 control scheme and lack easy strafing which improved N64 games.
After playing dual stick shooters Prime felt like a piece of shit.

modern controllers have the A button on the opposide side of the Y button, Metroid Prime doesn't let you change controls in-game, so on a Wii U for instance using Nintendont to play the original, you have to regrapple the controller to use a thumb and an index finger to fire the super missiles (holding A and pressing Y)

the Gamecube controller had A in the middle, smack dab next to the Y, which is how the super missile is supposed to work fluidly

          Anonymous

the probably with Prime is the backtracking, the controls are mostly incidental if you use a Gamecube controller to play it. (the claw)

It's not ideal but it works for the game they made—they designed it around the fact the GameCube's C-Stick is completely unacceptable for camera control. You can press L to activate strafing (a half-press will do so without locking onto anything, analogue triggers ftw) which is handy at times. Yeah you sacrifice the ability to turn but the game isn't frantic enough that you'd need both, and besides locking onto an enemy gives you strafing+turning automatically.

Does this make the combat totally lame? Yes. Are the enemies designed to be as unimposing as possible because the controller isn't equipped to translate Metroid combat into 3D? Yes. Is the manual aiming pretty bad? Yes (though you need it maybe 3 times in the whole game). But the devs didn't focus on the shooting anyway.

Like I said, the controls aren't ideal, but they get the job done for the game they tried to make.

c stick would work if the camera recentered when you stopped moving it. reimagine it has the right trigger + left analog stick.

      >a half-press will do so without locking onto anything, analogue triggers ftw
holy frick. i was looking for ways to map it on my xbox controller on dolphin and this bit of info never came up.
Let me think if its possible for Dolphin to make it a normal FPS.

Lstick up is forward (leave as is.)
Lstick down is backward. (leave as is.)
Lstick left turns left. (remap to Rstick left)
Lstick right turns right. (remap to Rstick right)
Map halfL-press Left and Right to Lstick and Rstick.

and I don't remember but cStick already goes up and down, doesn't it?

I thought the controls were shit too. Worst I had ever seen. I played it for weeks and I couldn't even get past the title screen. Then I realised I didn't have the controller plugged in. I don't normally have trouble with retro games(I grew up with literal Apple IIe ascii graphics), but this one was just boring and had bad controls and I legit don't understand why it's so well liked, even for the time period. It just isn't a fun game.
