It amends a lot of the jank from the original GSC, but doesn't go far enough to fix issues like the weird level curve.
Really, a lot of that issue could've been alleviated if they had just included the Vs. Seeker from FRLG/DP to rebattle any trainer you want on your own terms. The cell phone is totally unreliable, and you essentially get zero rematch calls anyway until post-game. So if you need more EXP, you need to grind wild pokemon. But the wild pokemon are laughably low level in most places, so that's a horribly tedious process. And this also spills over to the issue people have with pokemon distribution, because it becomes a tedious affair to actually use any pokemon you encounter late-game because of how annoying it is to grind them up to the rest of your team's level. This incentivizes the player to basically just stick with six mons they find very early on, because switching out any parts of your team requires you to essentially start from scratch, slowly grinding them up on wild pokemon.
That sounds incredibly tedious, not to mention doesn't really work as a painless way to grind up your mons because you're reliant on trainers being available for rematches at whatever the time happens to be, and you can't keep rematching them on your own schedule, not unless you go through the tedious process of resetting your clock over and over and over.
Point being, grinding is especially annoying in the johto games. They should've included the Vs. Seeker, bare minimum, to help solve this problem. As it stands, whenever I play HGSS I just use PKSM to edit in rare candies because otherwise it's just too much of a time-consuming pace-breaker trying to update my team composition at all.
Oh, yeah. I do have something against HGSS. The soundfont is fricking terrible, completely botched the iconic National Park theme. I'll never forgive them.

A simple effective mod of this game could easily make this a 10/10 for every fan of the series.
