Why weren't they just regional variants? Why did fans eat up this dogshit "convergent species" excuse when there's only going to be two with no new additions in the DLC?

They got tired of the (region name) (pokemon name) naming scheme.
So instead of "kitakami polteagist" they made the "new" poke.
That's a logical thought.
>Why a mushroom and a jellyfish aren't the same creature?
>Why an eel and a more aren't the same creature?
i don't know have you tried slamming your head on the wall?
>more
>why is thing that looks exactly like another thing with small details changed isn't considered a variant?
Yeah, I wonder.
Guess you think that whales are fish and owls are birds
Why aren't a black tea ghost and a matcha ghost the same creature?
Because unlike plteageist the object itself is the pokemon not the liquid inside
You dont know that yet
Yes I do. You should too.
>deny the evidence even when it's in front of you
For starters, its a parallel to Sinistea, not Polteageist
Ok and?
Why a liquid ghost would evolve into an objectmon?
Why a liquid would evolve into dust to begin with?
are you stupid
ghosts possessing objects is a concept so basic we have dozens of pokemon illustrating it
why would sinistea be incapable of having any sort of hypothetical evolution where it utilizes that ability?
explain why this would not work as a split evolution where sinistea fully possesses the object instead of simply living in it?
both shit
Similarly tea and matcha powder are different things, although both are ghosts
Regional variant
>Tauros is still a bull
>Raichu is still a mouse
>Darmanitan is a still a gorilla
Convergent
>Dugtrio is now some eels
>Tentacruel is now a mushroom
Apart from that they are almost essentially the same except that GF now has an excuse to cut convergent species in the future instead of including them in games with the original form.
Because it wouldn't make sense in universe
Explain how a fire type pokemon becomes a ice type in another region.
Explain why you're on an 18+ website with a 3rd grade education level
>they look similar = they have the same genetic make up
I didn't know foxes could literally breath fire, dumbass.
Well a species of pokémon can change type through adaptation but can not completely change the species itself.
Why would a fire type need to adapt in a region that's not even cold?
Idk, what it matters is that it just did.
I think they just wanted to try something new to fill out the proposal/design document they would have had to put together before the game was developed - something to point to and say 'we're trying something new that can be marketed'. Convergent evolution in-and-of isn't a terrible idea to try and pull off - it's just they weren't super- creative with the execution.
This would be considered a convergent species by you guys logic.
That's still a fish just like the original
It's a bear trap that lives on land. The original lives in lakes.
based moron
cope
Idiot. Region forms still have slightly different ecological niches to their originals, the change in environment isn't what makes the difference it's the change in species (Mole to Eel or Jellyfish to Mushroom). Stunfisk is still a catfish, but instead of living in water and using camouflage and electricity to predate, it has evolved spikes (as it's now a steel type) to ambush prey on land instead. Stop being dumb.
>no new additions in the DLC
>Poltchageist revealed today
everyone heckle this man
It better. If it evolves from Sinistea, then no more excuses.
could be a few reasons but the answer is probably the most obvious one.
Regional forms dont take up a dex slot, Convergent species can have their own dex slot, and it won't frick up by having galarian meowth as dex number 52, and it's evolution as 863
My issue with convergent species as a whole is they don't try to fix the stats or change them up so they feel like their own thing. They are literally just regional variants.
If you see a convergent pikachu, it's probably going to look like a pikachu.
You don't get the galarian yamask treatment where it's something entirely new.
>My issue with convergent species as a whole is they don't try to fix the stats or change them up so they feel like their own thing. They are literally just regional variants.
hell, even regional variants will usually change up the base stats of their originals
convergents don't even do that much
By that logic there should have been a convergent Mankey & Primape to not have a dex difference with Annihilape
why do anything different ever
Brand new dex entry and evo line > regional form shitmon that will be unobtainable and forgotten in the next game
Brand new evo > "not"clones of original pokemon > regional variant
I assume convergents exist so Gamefreak can both go wild with new things for old Pokemon without them being the same species and so they don't have to be stuck in one region 90% of the time.
>regional variant
>just old pokemon with a different coat of paint
>convergent form
>just old pokemon with a different coat of paint AND different label to it
>paradox pokemon
>just old pokemon with a different coat of paint, label AND it's based on dinosaurs and robots
What's next?
Alter Pokemon
>Dude what if old pokemon but with black and white colors and they're evil too.
WTF BROS, why did gayfreak make these into individual pokemon instead of making them forms?! I'm LITERALLY shaking and crying right now
IT DOESNT COUNT
I know this is a bit, but I despise a good majority of these designs, save for the nidos and latis. Even then, I do think making both nidos separate species was kind of dumb in hindsight, since they’re the only Pokémon separated by species gender now.
It’s so they can show up with less explanation in future titles, any other answer is autism. They realized they fricked themselves over by creating versions of Exeggutor, Marowak, Raichu, etc that sparked new popularity but then inherently gatekept them to a singular region, so now they’ve had to do gay shit like events and npc gifts in order to obtain them in new games. With these “convergent” or whatever the frick GF will end up calling them, you can just have Wiglett or Poltchageist show up in the wild in Gen 10 or Gen 33 without bending over backwards, because nothing of their design or lore is inherent to Gen 9. It’s just a way to make the variant concept more futureproof, the real question is whether or not they’ll retcon the old Gen 7 / Gen 8 variants into “convergent” or something adjacent. Wild Alola forms in the DLC make it seem like they’re heading that direction, no?
Like how they retconned Nidoran male and female into taking up one dex number instead of being gender differences right anon? The answer is that there is no logic.
They will never change the original 151 beyond stuff like retyping or new moves
I’m just pissed that they just intentionally do is for the Pokémon nobody gives a frick about instead of all the popular ones that actually would benefit from this kind of shit. The fact that it’s been a decade since they’ve been doing this crap and they haven’t even touched Pokémon like Dragonite already proves my damn point.
What the frick do you want us to do? protest and boycott?
Regional variants a concept that threatens longterm branding. In another generation you will have new fans who do not know or care what Alola is. Less in-universe context = good for brand. Convergents let them reuse designs/have cute nods to existing fans without needing to add a meaningless phrase like Alolan/Galarian/Paldean before the Pokemon's name. I expect them to phase out variants over time.
>tfw you lived long enough to see people went from defending and praising regional variants to wanting them replaced
contrarianism is a disease, and /vp/ is dying from it
