Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 were terrible on launch
(76 is actually good now, years later but I digress)

and we have seen year after year of mediocre AAA releases. Diablo 4 for example is one of the most expensive games in gaming history from a development and marketing standpoint and it's absolute trash compared to other titles in the genre

        >Starfield's been reviewed waaaay more harshly than most other games
If anything, the lazy shit hasn’t been reviewed harshly enough. It’s a monolith to an industry that’s in complete fricking shambles and should be sacrificed at the altar of stagnant game design so others learn recycling the same 18 year old game but in space is unacceptable for AAA standard.

          Anonymous

Starfield, middling as it is, is not really like most other AAA titles these days.
It's not a third person multiplayer GaaS, nor is it a third person action-RPG with a huge focus on mo-cap and VA work to carry it. Its' not the most innovative game but Bethesda clearly just makes its own type of game and doesn't chase trends too much. Granted, I still don't like a lot of their decisions as of late. But I can't really say they're chasing the current AAA ur-genre bandwagon

            >game not bad because it’s not like other thing
This excuse making is the exact reason why Bethesda will never change for the better. They’ll just keep shitting out the same game until the end of time because cucked fools will defend it and buy it.

              Anonymous

I didn't say it wasn't bad, I was saying that it's not the same as the AAA trends that are in fashion right now.
I think Bethesda games do need to get better but in different ways from other AAA titles. The things I'd like to see changed with games like GoW or Spiderman or AssCreed or Hogwarts LEgacy are different from what I'd want to see Bethesda games change.
For instance, I think Bethesda games should lean more into the Immersive-Sim philosophy and focus more on creating in-depth npc AI trees and taking inspiration from games like Dwarf Fortress or Rimworld. Focus on making systems for players to interact with and combine, rather than creating a super bespoke/tailored experience

i have very mixed feelings on this game. i played it a ton and enjoyed it, but it does leave something to be desired. they'd maybe have been better off keeping it within the solar system and have 9 fleshed out handcrafted planets to explore. the procedural generation did leave a lot to be desired. i'm sure i will be playing starfield ten years from now with a zillion mods installed, but it certainly didn't have the lasting impression that mw/ob/sky had, nor even fallout 3. fallout 4 had the glowing sea, but it was otherwise forgettable imho

Gaming "communities" are all about trying to gain acceptance and be perceived as having "distinguished" or "high level" tastes to people who don't know or care who they are. It used to be just the journalists, but now it's the majority of the group ever since marketing has effectively got the label "gamer" to stick.

It's a lot of the reason why I cut my time coming to Ganker and places like it to maybe once or twice a month or so now. It's infinitely more fun to play games to play them and enjoy yourself instead of play games to talk about them with the "gaming community".

Literally every single aspect of the game is half-baked and underdeveloped. It's chock full of 'potential' and that's essentially the nicest thing you can say about it. But unfortunately 'potential' isn't worth jack shit to anyone playing right now and it seems even the most ardent Bethesda fanboys are getting tired of waiting for mods to fix it.

I think the real deathblow to Bethesda here is that by the time they release proper modding tools, most people will be so disinterested in the game that very view modders are going to invest serious time and effort into modding it. In the past there was always a sort of prestige for modders to come flying out the gates with a new Bethesda release making cool mods and developing their own followings. What's the incentive to develop a mod that takes months of work for a game that is already dead in the water and generally not fun to play.

        Anonymous

I really want to see Todd trying to create an incentive for modders to mod it. The simplest incentive is to embrace that game is garbage and try to sell modding it as ultimate modding challange - start with shit and turn it to gold. No one has interest in this so if it happens you will know it is Todd trying to clumsily pull the strings.

Do you think they'll push the "paid mods" debacle again to try and incentivize them? Obviously that would backfire spectacularly again and push even more players away from whatever husk of a playerbase is remaining at that point.

Starfield isn't going to get extensive mods because there's absolutely no starting point. People go on and on about mods for TES and Fallout but there, the mods exist primarily to add on to existing features, characters, locations, and lore. There is no foundation there to make people say, "Yes, I am going to put my time into building something here, it is worth my effort". Not only is the artstyle shit and the game world(s) utterly barren, but the characters are are awful, boring, and ugly. The amount of work it would take to make something even vaguely entertaining using it as a base would be better spent making a new fricking game.

          >absolutely no starting point
So you are saying that it is complete shit and only you fellow modders can turn it to gold? Remember it is not only the proof of your love to Bethesda but it is also proof of your skill and mastery.

I wonder if Bethesda even considered the fact that anyone who would have made mods for their games 5-10 years ago can now just as easily use Unreal/Unity to make a fully fledged game of their own and sell it for $10 on steam these days. I think a lot of the people who made super popular mods for their old games have actually gone on to do exactly that. So all you're left with now are noob modders who might make one or two UI mods to try and get some name recognition.

Doesn't do one thing well. What does starfield excel at? Gun play? Third person action? Spaceships? Exploration? What singular focus in this game is unrivaled. In an attempt to please everyone, it pleased nobody.

Also. Space isn't for everyone. Look at any space game. They are all niche. You couldn't like x4, nms, ED, SC, etc. What in the world made normies think they would like it now?

There is literally no such thing as an 'untouched world' in this game lmao. Even planets with space magic temples will have mining facilities a stone's throw away and we're expected to believe that these places have been sitting there undiscovered and undisturbed for eons. Doesn't run smoothly on anything but a high-end PC, it's the worst optimized game of 2023 easily. Also unless you're running a PCIE4 nvme ssd, the loading screens are intolerable. It was clearly developed for Xbox Series X first with its 5GB/s compressed disk read speeds and PC was an afterthought. The PC version doesn't even support Direct Storage which would make a huge difference

Also we have games like Cyberpunk now with no loading screens after the initial load. Loading screens every 30 seconds is no longer acceptable. It's not charming or cute, it just feels ancient and fricking lazy, like they didn't even bother to mask them with elevators

When it's convenient to change the narrative it would be a mistake not to do it, they were saying that PS5 games being ported to PC means they are no longer exclusives, so they changed the narrative to - If the only console that you can play the game on is Xbox then it's Xbox exclusive.

People said it was the standard Bethesda experience. Here are my problems with the game:

    >No gore, look at FO3 and FNV, it SEEMS that it was toned down to appeal to more of an audience. Who? Kids? They played it anyways? This confused me.

    >The main story attempted to create lore out of NG+ and it lost focus in my opinion. The "best" quest everyone talks about is the UC one with the Terramorphs but there aren't really any consequences for your choices and actions. Whereas in FO3 or FNV we would either see upgraded enemies with rockets or if we put the FEV virus in the water people would line up outside the clinics.

    >World building and AI going about there day just sucks ass. People are trying to cope so much saying there is no need for big cities and that humanity is actually struggling after the war and leaving Earth. Shut the frick up and stop making excuses or lazily mapped cities. There are no schedules, there is no actual feeling of immersion. The closest is the Neon. Hell if they made a planet just filled with Neon's style I would be happy. Yet the minute you leave the one main street to go to the "ghetto" it's just an alleyway and nothing ever happens.

    >UI is just terrible done. Menu after menu after menu. More menus please. I'm about to menuuuuuuuu.

    >Relationships? I mean I never really cared about romantic relationships in these games but between the crew it just makes no sense. Their established morals given backstory do not line up with their reactions to the player's actions. We have no problem working someone for an artifact piece but then against thievery? Even warranting someone's death? The part where you are getting chased from the Lodge through Jemison and the countless injured or killed - no one bats an eye about that. UC doesn't care and no one in Constellation cares. The same filter / script is used for the terramorphs on Jemison.

It's just LAZY. And if anyone paid extra to play early, you're a fricking moron. The game is BAD.

Its just not a good game. In every aspect of being a game it fails. The controls are shitty. The gameplay is shitty. Moving between things is shitty. The graphics are shitty. Theres giant empty fields literally everywhere, its a game about space exploration except theres literally no reason to do it. Every function and feature is half implemented and purposeless.
If starfield came out in 2003, it would be an amazing game. That was a time when shitty controls, shitty gameplay, and big empty spaces punctuated by loading screens and menu based travel would fly in a AAA game.
In 2023? We've seen the same thing done better in countless other games. So what makes this one unique? Literally nothing.
