Will We Never Ever See Decent PS2 Emulation?

First of all: many people believe that since the main CPU (Emotion Engine) runs at a clock speed of 294Mhz (299Mhz on later revisions), it would make emulation easy on recent hardware.
But this is not the case, because the clock speed of the emulated CPU is not necessarily indicative of the ease of emulation.
Specifically, the PS2 CPU contains a multitude of custom sub-components and chips such as the FPU co-processor, 2 Vector Units, IOP, SPU2, Graphics Synthesizer and SIF which together work asynchronously to comprise the 128-bit Emotion Engine.
In order to emulate them perfectly with correct timing requires an enormous amount of power.
Moreover, the PS2 just like PS1 uses the MIPS architecture instead of standard x86 code, thus making emulation slower.

Another big problem is the emulation of PS2’s own floating point unit (FPU) because it doesn’t follow the IEEE standard.
To keep it simple, just changing a couple of numbers will cause glitches to occur to the game’s graphic (VU) and logic (EE), resulting in things like broken AI, odd behaviors or graphical bugs.
While PCSX2 allows for the option of either clamping/rounding on both VU and EE as a solution to fix these glitches, it remains by far not the most accurate way to emulate the PS2 FPU.

To conclude on the problems with PS2 emulation, we come to hardware rendering.
The PS2’s graphics pipeline acts very differently from modern GPU cards and emulating it in HW mode with any degree of accuracy is difficult.
This is due in part to the versatility of PS2, fact that it doesn’t use fixed shaders, or that even the games themselves do not use a consistent formula to achieve different graphical effects.
Various type of emulation enhancements like display resolution scaling leads to the typical “black lines glitch” because of the use of a non-integer resolution.
While the OpenGL backend on PCSX2 greatly improved on many of these issues, most games still require “software rendering” to fix many common glitches, which in turn slows down the emulation.
Although Games using mip-mapping (Ratchet & Clank, Ace Combat, etc...) and games running on the Snowblind Engine are playable in OGL HW mode with minimal problems on high-end PCs.

In summary, it is not possible to achieve close-to-perfection PS2 emulation with actual PC hardware, and even if it was possible, the results would most likely be unplayable.
The PS2 is simply a very complex machine that even game developers struggled to work with.

basically blow a lot of money and you can emulate every PS2 game in software mode fullspeed if you don't want to tweak hardware mode.
however we've reached a point where a large portion of ps2 games have widescreen codes and honestly look great, but its the waiting game for hardware mode fixes

I can run most of my PS2 collection in software mode on an overclocked 3800x, but the main issue is the blurry as frick mess of the native resolution.
Its worth putting up with the graphical issues to be able to have 1080p+ and looks crisp

There's no need, they already have an extremely competent in-house emulator working on the PS4. They could've easily had PS2 BC on it, if PS2 classics didn't sell gang busters.

Wtf does that even mean? I've played quite a lot of games on a emulator and it didn't seem that different at all, other than the occasional slowdowns because of my then potato machine. Can you give me examples of a popular game that's not "accurate"? Off the top of my head I've played all the SH a few years ago and also had played it beforehand on a PS2 and there was no difference at all.

No not really. A lot of games either straight-up don't work in HW mode or have major bugs that are only fixable with going into SW mode

Stupid question but something I don't understand is why you can't build a new computer with a similar architecture. I can actually code to an extent in MIPS and X86 assembly so I somewhat understand these things, but a lot of the complaints people have about things other than the ISA seem a little bit redundant to me as long as you build something that can do everything better with the same instructions and just slow it down when/if it runs too quickly. I mean ultimately the assembly code tells the console everything it needs to do so surely the fact that PCs use X86 is the real issue. Does anything even use MIPS nowadays? If you can build one system with this architecture it might be able to do N64 as well btw

you can do the same thing with a PS2 slim if you want too.
Since the slim doesn't have a HDD, you can connect a HDD to a raspberry pi (or clone) and connect the raspberry pi via ethernet to the PS2 slim.
Since the ethernet port isn't slow like the USB ports, you can get full read speed.
With a Freemcboot memcard you can have ISO loading on your real PS2 slim very easily.
