Its because the human eye focuses on a fixed point with peripheral vision blurred .The player has to look directly at Mario before making a jump on one of the platforms to ensure they do not run too far and fall off before they make their jump, then they have to redirect their eye to the point to guide mario in the air to land on it in quick succesion. By making the beam a large object that descends downwards it takes up a larger portion of your peripheral vision and helps spacialise mario in landing on it.

I read some stuff about SMW level design, the idea of design themes and stuff is pretty interesting, I feel like modern games aren't as well designed because there doesn't seem to be a continuity in the gaming industry, with newer devs learning design concepts from older ones, new generations just try to reinvent things on their own or try to copy older things without getting the essence of it.
