pretty baffling how they straight up had nothing except for a patch for a 9 year old game that still somehow managed to suck despite being announced years ago. i think they just got caught flatfooted by the success of the show and wound up having to say "frick it, how much of that big patch is done? finish it up and ship it"

By all accounts, they shouldve had Fallout New Vegas 2 or Fallout: Stardew Valley out, but remember they have Fallout 76: Their own Fortnite-like. A forever-platform they can just crank out reskinned monsters with higher levels and cashshop items to harpoon some whales. It's the ultimate least effort for most gain not having to make an entire world from the ground up, its like when indie devs discovered the roguelite formula.

I dont know and dont know anyone who plays it. If I were to take a leap Id guess they sucker in people who dont follow news or forums and just saw "Fallout" and bought the latest installment. First wave was lost in the buggy launch, another when encountered the grind and cashshop, and then the die hards with somehow endless disposable income stays and that is enough to keep it afloat like any live service game.

Even without taking the show into consideration they should've had studios work on spin-offs right after they acquired BGS, because looking into the dev pipeline of BGS it was always obvious that it would take almost 20 years for the eventual Fallout 5. It's ridiculous that they are only now having talks about a new Fallout from a different dev.

It was a blunder sure, but they've bought themselves time.

The show got renewed for a second season, and probably could safely be expected to run for at least three, at this success rate. So that's about 3 years they could have to work on a game to position it for launch around when the show final season airs.

It's not optimal but it's better than nothing. Considering Obsidian could make NV in a year, I believe Bethesda should be able to make one in about 3.

NV had a lot of FO3 to build off of though. It's been too long since it came out to just do that off 4 (playing it recently, it does already feel annoyingly dated). Maybe they try to adapt a bunch of Starfield stuff?

Why don't they just either create a new team under the leadership of some veterans, or just give it to another studio? After Starfield, it's obvious that Bethesda's creative team is nothing special and few OGs are still there. It's easy to emulate their style as they did with New Vegas.

Fun fact, Starfield was in development longer than PS4 was considered "next gen" and current gen.
    TES6 is likely a 10th gen game.

AAA development is so bloated and takes so long to develop, they should start making standalone expansion like games like New Vegas or STALKER sequels as soon as possible.

They had a chance to fix FO4 with FO76, except they made it live service game

yeah and im saying most people dont care about Larian specifically and only about the IPs. Also going for a space game is just moronation at this point. Really from a financial PoV it would be stupid for MS to allow bethesda to just sit on TES and FO IPs
These IPs make bank and are system sellers for them.
Th reason we have not had a new TES game is because ESO makes them cash and it will take the playerbase away.
I guess they tried to do the same with FO76.
Still what MS should do is either split the bethesda team on 2 projects, FO and TES or get obsidian on FO after their game drops (which looks shit and will most likely flop) with consultation from bethesda while bethesda make the next TES game.

they should not place different developers in different gaming divisions
      >bethesa, obsidion rpg divisions
      >activision, 343 dude bro shooter division
      >zenimax, blizzard mmo division
and so on, they need to micromanage the hell out of these different developers and this is a more effective way of doing it

I think from a creative PoV it is best to keep all the teams separate, but specifically obsidian, they have experience with fallout and the shit engine, they could easily make a FO"5" (spin off like NV) while bethesda works on TES.
id has experience with the engine getting the FPS shit to work too. Putting these teams together could help.

I get the bethesda wanted to make a new IP and from a financial PoV it is worth a risk though imagine starfield was super successful then bethesda has 3 alternating IPs, which would mean over 10 years between new entries.
Financially that is a poor decision when you could bring the IPs out in 3-5 year intervals.

look at all the slop Ubisoft produces in a small timeframe, they run a tight ship and microsoft needs to do the same thing, the devs have too much autonomy, and this is the reason why they are turning to consultation studios like sweet baby because they’re not getting any sort of narrative or creation advice from microsoft

            Anonymous

R* do the same thing as well.
Though MS and more specifically, sony, they are priding themselves on allowing the devs to have creative freedom.
They cant afford to consolidate all teams to do 1 game because they need a constant flow of new games and IPs to keep the hardware sales going.
Its a different situation for ubisoft and R* who are just game studios.
Saying that though EA does what MS and sony do too, allows the dev teams to work on their IPs individually.

      >Really from a financial PoV it would be stupid for MS to allow Bethesda to just sit on TES and FO IPs
But MS is actually THAT stupid. They literarily bought like 10 companies in the past 5/6 years and none of them have released a video game that wasn't already planned before the buyout.
Think about it again - Microsoft hasn't started working on a single game with any of the companies they've bought so far for half a decade.

I am well aware of how moronic they are bro.
Fricking hell they killed lionhead and their IPs, killed rare just as the FPS boom was happening they got the team known for quality console FPS to make kinect ga,es.

The REAL issue, its that MS ia corporation, all they care about is fiscal increases and because of that their prerogative is make money over smart business in the gaming industry.
Its like nobody in charge at MS know what gamers actually want.

Sony and nintendo on the other hand have the industry perfected.

Was bought for 2b even after a decade I am HIV postive MS has not even got 1/5th that back in TOTAL profit, not sales not X bullshit where taxes and everything else makes it seem huge.
The game people keep buying and more than one copy because a copy of the game is one online account only. Is their best selling AND GOD KNOWS FRICKING HOW MOST PROFITABLE IP/GAME game. EVEN WITH THE MASSIVE FRICKING DEBT LOW COST OF THE GAME AND MASSIVE AMOUNT OF MONEY TAKEN AWAY EACH SALE FOR SHIT EARNING MS LIKE 2-5$ a copy for minecrat. No one plays bedrock its garbage they thought children would steal mommy and daddies credit card to buy stolen mods from subhuman indians&chinks charging 10$ a skin and 20+ for some shitty items low effort created worlds or wtv random shit stolen from old free mods.

Every server is beyond P2W charging children 1-10$ per loot crate key 20-5k for their name on the server being a diffrent color the more they spent the bolder the color to dab on le poors. Charging for items with stats you cant get. These servers even shitty ones with less than 500 players are pulling in thousands of dollars a month. And MS does not see a penny of that money. The large servers are pulling in tens of thousands a month. And the most popular servers are literal fricking money fountains is morons blow so much money on OP items blocks because they are to lazy to do anything cosmedic items to call people poor. And loot boxes with odds so low winning the lottery is legit 9001X more common&easier.

Even with Obsidian being shit now - handing them Fallout 5 or atleast a new spinoff would make sense. Bethesda will be busy with TES 6 for another 5+ years and out of all those other XBOX studios Obsidian are still suited best for that job. Everyone else is either busy or they got next to no experience with RPGs like Fallout.

Anyway: XBOX people are right when they say that Fallout 5 not happening until +2030 is unacceptable. The series is getting hyped right now and they want to respond to that.

Bethesda is such a cursed company

Although they deserve credit for developing Fallout into one
    >TES was made great by people who haven't worked at Bethesda in a decade or more

    >skyrim dumbs down oblivion
    >outperforms it
    >fallout 4 dumbs down fallout 3, which is honestly impressive
    >outperforms it
    >fallout 76 isn't even fallout, and it's launch is one of the worst in gaming history
    >as if defying fate, it rises from its grave years after the fact and hits its peak concurrent player count
I remember when Fallout 4 was released, both consumers and journalists basically said, "Enough is enough, get your shit together with whatever you release next, Bethesda." That was in 2015. Not even Fallout 76's launch or Starfield is enough to kill this studio. People will just keep buying their products forever because Bethesda will forever be the only fish in the small pond that is their specific sub-genre of open world games. They'll hold TES and Fallout hostage forever, releasing mediocre product after mediocre product, and doing it so slowly that people will forget that they promised themselves not to buy the next Bethesda game a decade ago.

Because Bethesda captured a big portion of the wants/needs for gaming market that nobody else is trying to tap into.
They're the only company until relatively recent time who actually tries to do "immersive" open world RPGs. I'm talking games that you can fully play in first person, complete open world, complete left to you how to build character and so on.
Most other RPGs are either narrative RPGs like BG3, Witcher games etc or they're hub-based immersive games like Deus Ex. Only recent cases like Cyberpunk or The Outer Worlds started to go into that niche.
It's similar with Rockstar and their massive success with GTA and RDR2. Because genuinely nobody from the big companies dared/gave a frick to do like proper action game set in a modern world with gangsters and shit, or like a proper triple-A western game. Nobody is even daring to challenge them anymore.
Like if I ask you to name an alternative to Fallout itself, maybe you will say STALKER (no game released in 15 years), Metro Exodus or maybe some of that zombie shit. And all of them are more shooters than RPGs. So that's why they get away with so much cursed shit, because they're one of the few companies will deliver that basic high fantasy "fantasy", or that "post-apocalyptic" fantasy. The rest don't even try ...

Would rather they kill Fallout and Elder Scrolls and make more new IP, it's been too long. But it's Microsoft and it seems like their strategy is to sell games to fans with the name on the box and disappointing them again and again with underwhelming to terrible games.

Yeah, all of Microsoft’s RPG studios are currently busy. Bethesda are obviously working on TESVI and Starfield updates, Inxile are working on Clockwork Revolution and Obsidian are working on their next two mediocre flops (Avowed and OW2). So who’s gonna make it? I guess Microsoft could tell Bethesda Austin to stop working on 76 and start on a new mainline game? Seems like poor timing tbh.

Only way you could get another Fallout game out soon would be to have someone make a spinoff using F76 assets as the base. That would probably just piss people off because it wouldn’t look modern enough.

This is the turnaround I was expecting, MS invested billions buying up all these companies that take a decade between games with no ROI for years, there was no way they were going to let that just continue. To appease these companies they'll be allowed to continue with the "main" entries of their franchises, but you're going to see a shitload of spinoff games over the next few years, for good or bad.

Fallout 3 is okay-ish if you think of it like it's a fan-made mod of Fallout. It has some awful writing (probably bottom of the barrel for Bethesda in the 2000s) but it's also hilarious in how bad it is.
Fallout 4 I just couldn't stomach, most people like the gameplay and story more than for 3 and NV but to me it just felt soulless and boring. I've tried 2 or 3 times and I've uninstalled every time before I even reach the major city hub.

FO4 doesn't even feel like fallout anymore to me. It's like Skyrim, honestly. Vanilla kinda blows but it's a good modding platform.

When did devtime bloat start? Early 2010s?
It's fricking insane, hyper succesful games that have no sequel 10 years later. Witcher 3 got two big DLCs not long (comperatively) after launch and since they we had a mobile game and nothing else.
I envy you old fricks who got a game from your favourite franchise every few years in the 2000s.

2015 or so, that's when it gone to shit for all companies simultaneously.
I was just looking at Bioware releases just now, they used to have a big game back to back every year. Even if it the game was kinda shit like DA2 or ME3, at least you always knew there was something to play further ahead.
Then they did DA:I in 2014. Then the Andromeda/Anthem shit happened in 2017/2018. And then they just fricking gave up. We've gone from a point where we had Dragon Age every 2/3 years to maybe we're getting a sequel a decade later.
I wonder if late 2010s/early 2020s were just a massive crash for gaming and nobody just talked about it.

        Anonymous

No, it's exactly the opposite. Gaming has become big, too big to fail. These companies are incredibly risk averse and their releases are tuned entirely to the market.

Investors made CDPR release cyberpunk a lot earlier than the devs wanted to, iirc. People assume it was being made since 2013 when the CG trailer was released, but by then it was just concept art. The work began after the w3 DLCs, so 2016-ish. Four years is actually decent devtime for a huge game, but they clearly needed more time.
That's the worst time, the bloatee dev time is warranted. And this is with them paying a billion pajeet codemonkeys.
Maybe we just need to return to Xbox 360 graphics, it wouldn't be a big loss in exchange for actually fricking having games to play before I become middle aged.

                >Phantom Liberty
Doesn't compare anon, they've regained a little bit of goodwill but most people are still skeptical now of the company overall. See pic related and check also the achievements in Steam for Phantom Liberty stuff, it's at the bottom of the list (like 10% did all Phantom Liberty endings combined).
The initial Cyberpunk 2077 hype was insane, it was the hype from all the goodwill they had from Witcher 3 plus the way the game itself was advertised. It had possibility to reach GTA levels of popularity if they didn't faceplant with all the bugs so hard.

I swear Ubisoft has wizards working for them, they never let up with releasing new games.
I just wish it was an actually good studio instead.
Now CDPR has confirmed their next game is another Cyberpunk, the closest thing we'll get to a 'new' witcher anytime soon is the remake of the first game.
Do these homosexuals literally hate money? Witcher 3 released 4 years after 2 and was massive, both in scale and sales. It literally made them into the biggest studio in europe. Now, nothing. Better make a sequel to the embarassing frick-up instead!

I don't really get why people say "Obsidian is shit now." They're fine. Outer Worlds is mediocre, not shit. Pentiment was a fun and compelling little adventure game.

I wouldn't call it a 4, I'd give it maybe a 6 or 7. There were compelling bits even if it didn't come together and it got closer to satisfying my FPSRPG itch than FO4 or anything else I've played so I gave it some leeway.

Outie Worlds got a lot of hate from culture wars homosexuals because all the women in-game look like dykes and the entire plot is some reddit wet dream, they've practically combined rick (from rick and morty) with bernie sanders and that's the most important character in the story.
It's an okey game, pales in comparison to Obsidian's best like KOTOR 2, Mask of the Betrayer and New Vegas but it's also way better than their other slop (OG Neverwinter Nights 2, Dungeon Siege 3). Shit, I'd probably put it above Pillars of Eternity too.
But it's just nowhere near as good as New Vegas, so I'm not hopeful for their future ...

I feel like it'd be like 3rd person in any bethesda game. Something you use to check what your character looks like in a new set of armor, not actually good enough to play.
Also, switching between fast paced FPS and turn based would basically mean they'd need to make two games.

Fast-paced FPS is not a good fit for Fallout anyway. The only reason that shit was tolerable was because of VATS in the first place, the complete opposite of fast pacing.
