You might have forgotten that Modern Warfare 2(022) was meant to be 2 year game, but they did a 180 at the last moment to repackage the post-launch plans to become MW3. COD sucks, and they can't afford to take any gap.

We already know Sony was planning them from the Insomniac leak since they were planning to cut about 15-20% of Insomniac's workforce and close a studio or two. Bloomberg reported that the leak made Sony push back the layoffs.So it's a case of "When" not "if"
How big are these companies? Because I keep seeing news about X comapny laid off a thousand employees just to see the company has hundreds of thousands of employees and its a drop in the bucket.
