The funny thing is that Genesis had no reason to think it would hit Sephiroth that hard. He himself had been called a monster for two years by that point and when he first found out, he was isolated in the labs with a mad scientist, very sick, and got a triple whammy of being revealed as a monster, terminally ill, and spied upon by his own parents for his entire life. I imagine that in his degradation-riddled brain, he just thought that he was putting Sephiroth into an equal position, forcing him to face him rather than run away in fear and disgust.

According to background info, their conflicts never really went beyond casual shit talking. They would then fight it out, destroy some Shinra property, and things would be good again. We know that Sephiroth enjoys being smug and violent and for most of their training room duel they were clearly enjoying themselves - Sephiroth only stopped grinning when Angeal tried to stop them. Ultimania also made it clear that they were very close, with Sephiroth and Genesis trusting nobody except each other and Angeal.

My language calls this type of a relationship "Italian household" - there are episodes with shouting, flying dinner plates, slammed doors, an occasional mutual violence, but it always ends as fast as it began and both parties seem pretty happy with it overall.

To a certain extent, yes. Genesis genuinely had a deep-seated sense of worthlessness his whole life despite being objectively extremely successful. Sephiroth had always felt that his "was a special existence", and it seems Genesis had a similar sixth sense about his own status as a short-lived failure. But like most complexes and fears, it's not something you have on your mind all the time until that fear becomes reality.

They were. Giving Sephiroth a genuine human connection was basically the reason why Genesis decided to join SOLDIER, and he kept the memento of that dream with him even after desertion and until what he thought would be his death. You don't do that for someone you don't care about very deeply.

What EC is doing with him is a lot better executed because it is showing a younger sephiroth where he wasnt as jaded and then giving him friends. I think at CC's point he shouldnt be as connected with friends or his humanity, and that's what makes him break.

I think even the devs realized how he shouldnt have that many connections or friends, that's why he doesnt give a frick about zack in rebirth.

I've always interpreted this part as Sephiroth's current grief and feeling of betrayal coloring the memory of his past. You know, the usual "my wife left me, so she must have never cared about me in the first place" type of thinking people slip into when they're upset.

That aside, Sephiroth's reaction to emotionally difficult situations seems to have been avoidance and passivity. If you watch CC cutscenes closely, there are many scenes where Genesis tries to hold Sephiroth's gaze and Sephiroth turns away instead. His general strategy when he's upset is to isolate himself. People like that often have their relationships fray because their loved ones get tired of having to guess what's going on in their head. Cloud and Tifa's situation in AC has shades of the same problem.

The whole point of Sephiroth is how he never had people supporting him as Cloud got, it makes their parallels work a lot better. If you give friends or partners to him in all the phases of his life it just makes him look like a schizo who never truly wanted any support.

In the OG several things are different. For starters in the OG Cloud chased after Sephiroth out of anger for the destruction of Nibelheim and that was it. Sephiroth rarely appeared so Cloud was mostly on autopilot until Sephiroth was able to burst his bubble in the Northern Crater. The time Sephiroth mind controlled him in the Northern Crater, Sephiroth was able to turn Cloud's brain off and use him like a doll. Which freaked Cloud the frick out because he knew Sephiroth was controlling him but he didn't know how and so he begged his friends to watch over him and keep him in check.

In Remake Sephiroth is FAR more involved. Like he won't stop showing up. In Remake Sephiroth is more actively gaslighting Cloud and distorting his perception of reality. Like making him believe Tifa isn't real. Even Tifa showing her breasts didn't break the illusion. That's how strong it was. Cloud also starts losing his mind and stops believing in death. After all it's just a homecoming. That's the sort of shit Sephiroth says. So since Sephiroth is now active in Cloud's head that means Jenova has to work harder in the Remake to keep him behaving the way they want.

Well Cloud just double teamed Sephiroth with Aerith prior to the end. Whatever SE has planned for Aerith's role in part 3, Sephiroth's game is going to be driving a wedge between Cloud and Aerith by using her image to take advantage of that trust and then twisting the knife when the inevitable Northern Crater breakdown happens. So when actual Aerith does whatever she does, Cloud won't trust her. Why would he. Jenova can be anybody. Hell you could be Jenova for all I know.

I only mean it in the sense that because whether they intend it or not, people will have their own vision no matter what. The clusterfrick is too big, and pulling from every source just reinforces everybody's combined vision and encourages arguments stemming from said source materials. I.E., X was featured in RT (Remake Trilogy), but Y wasn't, but since X is from Z that means Z is "canon" so Y must be too, even if it's not explicitly featured. They're not retconning anything in order to unify a coherent (as if anything Square has ever produced is coherent) universe of themes and events, they're just adding to it.

Just to reiterate that I haven't played Rebirth and am currently on hold playing Remake (Chapter 9), but is there any explanation as to why? Like what triggers Sephiroth to do this, and what's his endgame? No pun intended.
