Nah, p99 is too archaic for my tastes and with how limited content it has compared to the game's 20 yo history. So I'm playing on retail.
Never played the game before so the nostalgia factor is out for me.
That's exactly what captivated me in EQ. The fact that levelling process isn't a drawn-out tutorial for solo-playing drooling morons but actually poses a real threat and urges playersto cooperate.
every time i've played on a live progression server in the past few years it's always just been hordes of people botting or multi-boxing. plus a lot of shit uses the later zone layouts even during the expansions that didn't have it. i just couldn't enjoy any of the live servers, barely anyone wanted to group because they were running around with their multibox parties.
Multiboxers sure are a dime a dozen here but people it's not as rampant as you describe. People are more than happy to include a real player instead of another of their box. At higher tier content at least. And besides, with GoD there are quite some zones and instances where driving more than 2 characters is such a hassle that real players are also more than welcome.
Dunno, I'm enjoying the game a lot. More so than any modern MMO the market offers right now.
maybe it's just because i started playing on mangler as soon as it was open so it was just a huge low level fest and everyone was popping xp potions with their giant starter 0 weight bags and shit. idk i started playing EQ before Kunark even came out and played until around LDoN or GoD before moving on. so i guess i just like p99 for the nostalgia factor or the difficulty. live has so much stuff in it that trivializes the game, but it's still EQ which makes it better than a lot of other MMOs you can still play today.
Hmm I dunno about Mangler but on Aradune I could always find a group for me (a SHM) and my buddy (a NEC). Also, there's a rule on Aradune that you cannot box more than 2 characters at the same time and both of them should be launched from different PCs. The GMs were pretty strict upholding this during Classic, Kunark and Velious (well, as much as they could be) so that may have helped too.

Indeed. I tried getting together a group for Ikkinz 1 the other day and we spent goddamn 90 minutes just trying to get to the dungeon entrance, something always went wrong with collective brainfarts. When we finally got inside the very fact that we made it felt like a fricking accomplishement.
Then I found out that all this time we tried to invis-levitate skip where a bunch of see invis mobs were placed strategically. All the while there was an obvious route without any invis breakers.

shaman and nec is a good duo combo. that's good that aradune is maybe a bit better with the boxing. also the other thing with the progression servers is I don't really like how fast they go through the content. I play a decent amount and am in a raid guild on p99, but I feel like the progression servers don't give you enough time to go through all the content before the next expansion comes out.
That was my gripe with TLPs as well. Especially for a new player. You just learn the ropes of the expansion, gear up and a new one is already behind the corner. Planes of Power though ran for 5 months and already began feeling like a drag by its end. So I don't think there's middle ground on this. Honestly, the 3-month release period is more than enough for a single expansion.
Good thing there are at least Luclin elevators by that time. But the run would still be quite long and dangerous.
On the flip side, almost every progression server i've seen has built in XP bonuses and doesn't keep some of the really hardcore classic bullshit. plus you have things from the store like XP potions and weightless bags, so i guess experiencing all the content in that time period is a little bit easier to do.
On p99 i started an iksar necro when Kunark came out and I was able to get to level 54 and was raiding by the time Velious came out.
idk i play on p99 which just got velious on the green server like a month and a half ago. that's the furthest expansion they do though. wouldn't mind if p99 eventually did a server that went up to luclin even though it totally changed the game.
Indeed it is. But you also should understand that given the strict time constraints for the expansion release schedule it wouldn't be possible to keep the original xp and instance ruleset.
Then again, it's not like you're skipping all the work that players of yore had to do. The grind, camps, dungeon run, time dedication as a whole are all still there.
oh yeah that's right, i forgot live has instancing too. is that in from the very start or does it come in with one of the later expansions like PoP or LDoN on the progression servers.

On that note, Velious would've been one of my favorite expacs if only not for the meddlesome faction work that screws you over lots of content if you're a member of a guild that raids everything. Good thing there's at least faction hit dodge method where you should be offline by the time the boss dies.
Aradune just got Gates of Discord released and I'm pretty content with the expac and what it offers. Why was it shit on hard back in 2004?
