And that's why it's awesome
>Crash Bandifluke
the series that had 2 good games and fizzled out in popularity after ~5 years? People have seriously been overrating this game recently lmao.
That’s not to say Nights was any better, but implying that Crash had any impact on anything is laughable.
It was popular for all the time the PS1 was on the market and that's more than enough. It's done its job. Nights wasn't popular for even a month.
The 4 ND Crash Bandicoots games on PS1 sold 20 million copies combined by 2000, which means the series outsold the combined total of Saturn and Dreamcast consoles sold.
You can definitively say that Crash Bandicoot was more popular than the entirety of Sega at the time.
The reason the series fizzled out is because Universal sold the franchise to a shit publisher (Activision) that shackled the series with shit developers.
The biggest mistake Sony made going into the PS2 was not acquiring complete ownership of Crash Bandicoot.
It took one Crash remaster announcement to make people forget about Mario games from the past 20 years.
Black person what the frick are you talking about. Crash 4, the remakes and that spin off came and went like a wet fart and Crash is utterly irrelevant again. The studio making them is going to be dead within a year.
It's actually more complicated than that. Because from the new knowledge we have, Crash 4 actually sold over 5 million copies. It appears that Activision killed it when they couldn't milk it with microtransactions.
t. Plumber Boy
Friendly reminder that the majority of Sonic games are unplayable trash. At least Crash has more good games than bad ones.
>At least Crash has more good games than bad ones.
Kek are you fricking kidding me? There are four good games, if that many, and the rest are utter filth.
Has it really been so long since NST BTFO everyone that people are trying the "Crash was never popular" lie again?
>zoom zoom
b8 post but "bandifluke" got me
There's literally nothing wrong with having a short but sweet run of great games.
>NOOOO! WHY ISN'T IT A NEVER ENDING FRANCHISE!
Because ND got bored of making it, and made Jak instead. Because creativity was allowed in those day.
>annual releases for over a decade, almost all mediocre to terrible
>short but sweet
Lol...
The first three are the "real ones". The rest are cash-ins.
Wrath of Cortex and Twinsanity are good, just not great, while Huge Adventure and N-Tranced are excellent, even the "bad" titles like Titans or Mind over Mutant aren't bad, just bland and not as good as what came before, then the N. Sane Trilogy and Nitro-Fueled were amazing, and the sequel Crash 4, while not as good as the trilogy, was still good despite it's 100% completion issue.
I hope we get a Crash 5 or something like it in a near future, corridor platformers are fun and it's a shame the style died out, there's so much more than can be done with it, Crash 4 showed us that.
I was under the impression it was due to Naka not wanting to make yet another Sonic game, he resents being "the sonic guy". Sucks to suck I suppose, fun game if you enjoy the gameplay style.
For a bit of context, in the previous 4 years Yuji Naka and his (Sonic) Team made 5 Sonic games, and they were sick of it. Not even the yakuza could make them do another one.
so then why personally cancel multiple Sonic games being made by other people?
nah, he was always a narcissistic butthole who thought he shit gold.
he tried to put the pillow over Sonic's head and legit thought people were going to go crazy for Fantasy Zone without the shooting.
I think it had something to do with using Naka's game engine without his permission. If I had to guess, he didn't want any association with Sonic whatsoever for a while, in which case he should have just quit really
>with using Naka's game engine
that was Xtreme. the other two Sonic games were not using anything from him.
>he should have just quit
that is what he threatened to do if Xtreme was allowed to use his engine.
he threatened to quit more than a few times, and SEGA should have let him.
Yeah he should have quit long before he ever got a hint of feeling pigeonholed. I'm going to assume you aren't referring to the traveler's tales games since those weren't cancelled, could you elaborate?
I did elaborate in the replies. see Sonic Mars and Sonic 16.
Oh, those. Yeah, it would have been nice to see those but I also don't think we would have missed out on anything major. It's still a shame someone past their prime was throwing their weight around like that, though.
That never happened
>I really have a problem with people telling lies
Judge said the same thing
He wasn't convicted for fraud, he was convicted for insider trading.
>He wasn't convicted for pedophilia, he was convicted for buying illegalized nudist magazines.
K
>believing a literal criminal
Uh bros, I thought Saturn was a 3D console? Why would one of Sega's best programmers say it isn't one?
So he can posture as if he's special.
He only cancelled ONE Sonic game, and it was for the best.
three that we know about, anon.
google Sonic Saturn and Sonic 16.
Sonic barely in development though, and i don't think that Sonic 16 was a Saturn game.
but I didn't say Saturn games, anon. I said Sonic games. two that were 3D and one that was 2D. and yes, the first was in development because there was screenshots and also footage from E3. google Sonic Mars.
Naka is the reason we didn't get a Sonic game for 4 years, he wanted to replace him with NiGHTS.
Sonic mars/Saturn were cancelled because they didn't seem that good.
definitely more interesting than what actually released
Fair enough.
Chaotix was still a more interesting game, the execution was just bad.
nah, it was derivative in every way except the bolted-on momentum junk.
if the other two had come out, I probably would have bought them.
to be fair xtreme looked like shit and iirc it was cancelled because health reasons not because of naka.
Naka was the nail in the coffin, according to Chris Senn, the guy who had the health problems you mention.
after blundering around it became clear they weren't going to make SEGA's deadline, and so they tried to get the NiGHTS engine in order to save the project. when that fell through, so did the project.
I might be alone in this but I genuinely liked how it looked and I think I would've had lots of fun if it had come out, but it wasn't mean to be really...
i think the model they used for sonic is nice, the animations are charming, the design is cute and it just looks good. the gameplay itself though looks like hot garbage, and probably wouldve killed the series
Sonic survived both Sonic '06 and SEGA going 3rd party, I think it would've been fine in the long run really, it didn't look that bad to me either I guess.
With the power of hindsight, if I was the Sega CEO at the time I would've just outsourced X-treme to Traveller's Tales.
Sonic R is proof that they were capable of making visually impressive Saturn games. Combine that with level design from Sonic Team and we'd have probably gotten something serviceable.
I agree, and I'd go as far as saying that even level design could've been given to TT, since that is, to me at least, one of the big highlights of Sonic 3D Blast, exploring the levels was always enjoyable.
I didn't say the graphics looked like shit, I said the game looked like shit.
and then they made it anyway
and it was shit 😮
what youtuber told you that?
me, but i'm not a youtuber. the game was objectively shit.
Sonic Lost World is fricking horrible (atleast the 3DS version)
>the Deadly Shix was good guys!!
Which coomer artist did you fell for?
Miyamoto's team made 6 Mario games before 64, and you didn't hear him crying because he wanted to make a gay clown game right as they moved to 3D and wanted a system seller. Yuji Naka was just a hack and the sole responsible for SEGA's demise.
So why not just postpone NiGHTS until after the 3D Sonic was made?
Japan may not have given a shit about Sonic at the time, but the rest of the world did
> Miyamoto keeps making Mario- respectedember of the community
>Naka stops making Sonic- going to jail
Yuji Naka went to jail for making Balan Wonderworld.
Dominoes
Sounds 100% justified
Yuji Naka went to jail for making a Nights successor
>Balan Wonderworld
I so, so wanted that to be a good game.
Hey everyone Motherfricker Mike here with another request. This one’s Balloon Wonderland for the PlayStation 5. Ballin Wonderland. It’s uh looks like the digital circus stuff you see on YouTube. Is this supposed to be Nights or something? He’s gotta creepy face. yeah. Ballin Wonderland, here we go. Sorry it’s called BALLIN Wonderworld. Ballin? Ballin Wondedland, what a frickin stupid title. This is some Sonic Mario looking shit. I never played Nights so I don’t know what to expect. Sorry, correction it’s called Ballin WonderLAND. Wait, what is it called?
And rightfully so.
?feature=shared
No, he went to jail for insider trading, even though he didn't actually go to jail.
I liked the dances
He could have just not been an butthole, and blocked the rest of the company's attempts to make another Sonic. He could have shepherded the project, while not directing it.
Didn't Miyamoto say he wished he would have been part of making NiGHTS
Aparently it's from a interview EGM did with Miyamoto. The oldest mention that I found online was from this site:
https://sixtyhertz.wordpress.com/2007/07/10/nights-vid-wii/
I've never seen an actual screenshot from this supposed EGM interview, so it's probably just another fake Miyamoto quote made up by seething Segatards. If it's even real, it's probably just misconstruing Miyamoto just being complimentary in that way Japanese are with competition and reading too much into it.
There is evidence that Miyamoto did ask Naka himself about NiGHTS 2 coming to Dreamcast.
http://info.sonicretro.org/Yuji_Naka_interview_by_Official_Dreamcast_Magazine_(September_1999)
Found it in the magazine itself, here's a link
https://retrocdn.net/images/6/6e/ODCM_US_01.pdf
I wonder if Miyamoto asked Yuji Naka before he went to talk to Tommy Tallarico about Metroid Prime.
Yuji Naka doesn't lie. He may commit financial crime, sabotage his coworkers for personal gain and constantly steal credit from his employees, but he never lies.
https://shmuplations.com/miyamotoxnaka/
Idk anons, it seems more plausible than not in my book, even if Miyamoto was just being courteous.
Same homie that said Sonic's favorite food is MickyD's, not chili dogs.
>Yuki Naka, infamous liar: Yeah guys did you know Miyamoto totally crawled in to my office on his belly, sobbing and crying and shidding while begging to become a member of Sonic Team?
Miyamoto just asked if he was making it, perhaps mockingly.
>phone rings
>Hey Yuji how’s it hanging man? Guys shut up, I’m on the phone. Yeah we just finished Super Mario Sunshine! How’s the Sonic games going? Hey are you making Nights 2? Hahahahahaha. Oh I was just wondering cause Nights was such a great game and all. I love the main character and the gameplay and such as. Guys stop laughing back there, go back to your tatami rooms. Yeah lol I was thinking maybe you could come to Nintendo headquarters and we can talk games and maybe do some sake bombs together. Me, you and the boys and the tea-pourers. It’ll be fun. You can bring your game gear. Dude shh shh. Yeah man I can’t wait to see you. It’ll be cool, bring Iizuka, he’s cool too. Oh and so is Tails and the red guy. Yeah alright man, see you later
>hang up
>hahahahahaha he said he’s gonna make a game for a dreamcatcher XD this guy I swear LOL hey when he comes by the drain on Kobayashi Street, frickin wave his ass, get him all drenched hahhahaha frickin Saturn dude
Reminds of when Insomniac accused Nintendo ripping off Ratchet and Clank's spherical worlds for Super Mario Galaxy, saying they were very flattered.
When Miyamoto got asked about it an interview, he said "I'm sorry, but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?
Have Miyamoto and Nintendo in general ever admitted their sources of inspiration?
It doesn't matter if Miyamoto was lying or not, this interview doesn't make him look "cool".
Miyamoto cited Pac-Land and being impressed with the screen scrolling as the inspiration behind the original Super Mario Bros. while the original PC Hydlide for Zelda 1's general presentation, with a focus on exploration over EXP building and Takashi Tezuka saying Zelda's identity was born of combining his love for Lord of the Rings with Miyamoto's love of Peter Pan.
Not a game, but a power up, the Wing Cap and Mario running with his arms extended from Mario 3 onwards Miyamoto on an interview mentioned being a reference to Arale from Dr. Slump because he loves that manga.
Man also really likes catgirls, hence Peach being playable in the game that introduces Cat Suit
>Pac-Land
suuure. anon, Pac-Land released the same year as SMB so how could it have inspired it?
do you think game companies were in the habit of giving the competition tours of their workspaces?
Here, use DeepL if needed
>https://hamatsu.hatenablog.com/entry/2015/11/30/113438
I went check, Pac-Land released a whole year before SMB1 in Japan, August 1984.
shit, for some reason I was thinking SMB was '84
you win this round, Miyamoto-dono...
Anon, it was 1980s, when games could be shat out in half a year without issue. It helps that SMB was already in production (as a shoot em up) when Pac-land came out, so they could just revamp the current project instead of having to get funding and manpower for a new one.
>Man really likes catgirls, hence Peach being playable in Cat Suit game Super Mario 3D World
He also designed Peach to have "cat-like eyes".
I'm pretty sure RC wasn't even the first game to do mini planets like that. Really, it's just another instance of convergent ideas like the spear, the wheel, dinner tables, etc. Not every game idea needs to be directly inspired by another game's implementation of it.
Miyamoto is under contract to not talk about his ideas or where he gets them from, Nintendo does this for the majority of their staff. Can't blame them when Miyamoto is still seen as a golden child in the industry.
>phone rings
>phone rings
>ITS A ME! MARIO! DOO DOO DO D-DOO DO
>hi you’ve reached the real Mr. Mario himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of all your favorite hit video games like Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid and more! I’m not at the phone right now, but your call is definitely important to us, please leave a message after the beep.
>BEEEP
>uh hey Shigeru it’s Yuji, I’m at a pay phone outside Lawson on Tenth and Kobayashi. Some prick splashed me and my coats all muddy, so it’s getting cleaned at E. Honda’s down the road so yeah… I’m gonna be late. Sorry about that, my whole weekend has been shit. I just got back from America and there was this meeting on the Sonic show and it was just some fat frick talking about Armageddon and his kids or something. So anyway when you get this message, just uh. You know hang tight, I don’t got a cell and my tea-pourers bounced on me, but uh yeah. See you.
>fricking hell man, you gotta smoke, Iizuka-san? Thanks man. Well we gotta minute, you still got my game gear?
>uh no Yuj, I thought it was in your coat.
>….frick
>is one of two Saturn-exclusives considered to be among the best games of all time
>"noooo it's actually bad :("
Lol ok
NiGHTS is a very memorable character design, if nothing else. It's remembered as the mascot of the Saturn for a reason.
>It's remembered as the mascot of the Saturn for a reason.
What was the competition, Bug! and Mr.Bones?
Sonic (3D Blast, R, Jam)
Sakura Shinguji, Clockwork Knight, Blue Dragon maybe?
Just not having a mascot associated with it. NiGHTS did stick as an icon of the system.
Don't forget Woody
That's SEGA CD
The one with an actual Sonic game
>Don't forget Woody
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILD WOODY!
Panzer Dragoon, the car from Daytona, Akira from Virtua Fighter, Segata Sanshiro
This info comes from Yuji Naka, who got convicted for fraud.
either way naka is a criminal and besides that has been well known to go on braindead finger pointing hate rants at people he holds a grudge against. He cannot be trusted as an impartial source.
Yes he can. Just because you do something wrong doesnt mean everything you do is discredited. Stop being like this.
>Akira from Virtua Fighter, Segata Sanshiro
Akira appeared in : VF1, Virtua Fighter Remix, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter Kids, Fighters MegaMix, those weird VF CG things from Japan, and Akira was suppose to be the main protagonist of Shenmue when it was still being developed for the Saturn. Shenmue was planned as a Virtua Fighter RPG initially. Even Segata Sanshiro dresses up like Akira in the same type of gi. I will say, Akira was secretly the true mascot of the Sega Saturn console.
>Sonic (3D Blast, R, Jam)
Two Sonic games that were outsourced to Travellers Tales, one of them being an upscaled port of a Genesis/ Mega Drive game. Along with a token collection of 16bit Sonic games and a bonus 3D world to remind you'what could have been'.
What do you think the atmosphere was like in the Sega offices on November 1995 when Mario 64 was first shown? Do you think it was the most quiet and sad day ever?
They were probably laughing their asses off, the Shoshinkai build looked like trash
Are we absolutely sure Nights isn't cooler than Sonic though?
>Sonic - dated 90's "cool"
>Nights - timeless image of the performing arts, bringing with it a sense of sophistication and tradition
>implying jesters aren't the coolest shit
his design is admittedly fairly weak for jester standards but if they made him shorter with a nice goofy face, that's a ludo b-tier mascot right there
Miyamoto isn't a console-warrior prick that hates every game. He loved Crash Bandicoot 1 when he played it at E3.
Sega were out of control maniacs who made all sorts of oddball games over the years. Nights was merely another chapter in their sorry saga. That said, reinventing Mario into a 3d game required a lot of creativity and invention on Nintendo's part. People ask, why didn't Sega make a 3d Sonic game to rival Maro 64, but that is much easier said than it could have been done.
You do realize NiGHTS doesn't have a gender?
The console wars have been over for years anon. It's time to move on. You can enjoy Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot and NiGHTS into Dreams these days.
Daily reminder that Yuji Naka refused to work on a Sonic game for the Saturn, and then when another team was making Xtreme he denied them the Nights engine under threat of walking out of the company forever.
>gay floating clown
You got a problem with that, chud boy?
Nights is better than crash.
SEGA were too aesthetically advanced for their time. Even now we are just catching up.
Yuji Naka storytime! lol
https://www.timeextension.com/news/2021/12/yuji-naka-killed-dreamcasts-star-fox-says-former-sega-producer
jesus I forgot this story. What a fricking butthole.
What are the odds of this guy having 5 Japanese-speaking programmers together in a room, IN 1999? Sorry but I don't buy it.
you're right japanese didn't get invented until the 2000s. He must just be lying to smear Naka.
Japanese culture hasn't caught on. There weren't hordes of sweaty weebs out there grinding both Japanese and programming. You couldn't find 2 people who could say hai at demoparties. Either this guy spent all of his luck on making this room a reality and should have bought Powerball tickets instead, or he's lying.
>well you see this corporate entity in the 90s in an industry and business that worked closely with japan wouldn't have japanese speakers because something something weebs
brilliant
The only people learning Japanese in the 90s were diplomats and interpreters.
...and people who aspired to get a job in an industry that was largely dominated by the Japanese and localization was one of the easiest ways to get your foot in the door. Like game design, for example.
thank god all those diplomats took the time to sub anime VHS tapes
90s okay - but WHICH 90s?
You think people still rode horse pulled carriages and rode steam boats?
We are not talking about 1870, we are talking about fricking 1998, close to 2000! The NES had come out over TEN years ago, the market DOMINATED by Japanese companies, most of all Nintendo, for over a decade!
If you wanted to go into game developing for also consoles in ANY way you better believe that sooner or later learning Japanese was a given to actually UNDERSTAND your business partners.
Why were both '90s (the 1990s and the 1890s, aka, The Naughty Nineties) so kino, bros?
better than the odds of Naka not being a piece of shit lol
>5
Yeah anon, 5. Not just one or two who realised they were getting thrown under the bus. Instead let's pick a random number out of our arseholes.
nta, he's clearly unhinged and would leap at the chance to lick the sweat from Naka-sama's ballsack, but the guy does say it was 5 lead engineers in the article.
they quit because of what Naka said.
That's my bad, I'm a moron and I should have read the link. I agree with him that it's unlikely that all 5 knew moon speak, but it says lead engineer singular and I'm guessing he spilled the beans to the other engineers. It'd be a stupid thing to lie about for no gain, in any case.
>unlikely that all 5 knew moon speak
i don't see why.
is it because programmers are all such absolute chads they would NEVER bother to learn something as nerdy as Japanese?
Japanese had the same status as, say, Chinese or Korean now. Yeah there's cool stuff going on there like games or music or TV shows, but are you REALLY going to learn Chinese or Korean?
This except unironically. As a kid I was so curious and intrigued about nights. But nobody had a Saturn and psx had final fantasy
Only good thing LW had was
>the parkour
>Zelda zone dlc
