I really do hope they differentiate how each of the current tanks mitigate damage before we get another one. Right now we basically have the lifesteal tank and then 3 face tanks.
DRK and GNB really need their own identity. Keep Paladin as the full on face tank that just says no to damage and Warrior as the lifestealer,
Gunbreaker should integrate what they did for the Clive event. The perfect dodge tank could be a really cool play style and it fits well with GNB style. I don't really know what they could do with DRK though, Warrior already does what I would pick for a DRK and just having some CDs that only mitigate magic isn't much of a playstyle.
DRK is the DPS tank, it's supposed to use his own health to do damage and for his defenses to increase the lower his health gets.

I think trading your tank invuln for more damage is a pretty good trade. They could increase the CD of it too if it's a bit too good and make the decision a bit harder.
This would be sick, they should also make it that the black night now aoe bursts for damage when it breaks and it does more damage that faster it's broken, so you trade your big defensive for a massive AOE.
I feel like GUB should do more damage than DRK in my opinion since it has so many oGCDs during burst you're likely to get fricked unless you plan ahead and shift things to make room.
There's not really any reward for getting good at it when DRK does more damage for less brain.
There should be parts that challenge people and force them to learn though, otherwise it increases the jump to high end content and makes starting extremely difficult because up until that point the game has allowed you to get away with whatever you want and then very suddenly you have to obey mechanics and meet DPS checks.
If the normal mode content had actual challenge to it, it could reduce the severity of this difficulty spike.
It shouldn't be ball bustingly hard, but the most recent alliance raids for example, are a fricking joke. I don't even pay attention to the mechanics because unless they stun me it's usually more of a DPS loss to move than to ignore it and mitigate or self heal the AoE, they barely tickle.

I just want it to go back to how it was before stormblood. It was interesting back then. Stormblood was the start of the end but it wasn't too terrible there. Shadowbringers basically ruined shit and because its all you've ever known you think its fine. Its really not.

initially I was in favor of tank stance because so many games make threat management entirely dependent on how good your gear is. I have to come to accept that tank stance is just a symptom of bad game design where encounters are entirely predicated on damage checks, in which all roles and skill are judged entirely on a numerical value wholly focused on damage output.

XIV legitimately demands more from you (not a lot, but more) to get anywhere. You can't progress to the end of the game without beating those requirements.
When I was new I beat shinryu normal despite dying literally 15 times, and the game used to be a little harder back then.
The real "ease" in XIV comes with how forgiving deaths can be. With technically limited in-combat resses. That's what usually makes normal trials, dungeons and alliance raids way easier than they would be without them.
Because trust me: people do still eat shit in all of that content. All of the time.

Following the crowd can get you through 99% of encounters. But 1% of the time you'll cause a raidwipe and people will get kinda mad.
Eating shit definitely can be good. I recall eating shit when Golbez did the attack where he summons those clones in a specific order. It was fun.
Definitely not saying normal stuff can't challenge you a bit, but that it needs to be sensible. And that most of the lack of difficulty is probably in the fact that there's theoretically infinite resses.

Less so from Shadowbringers to Endwalker, since we've kind of hit a plateau there, but I wouldn't say I find Titan (Hard) more mechanically complex than, say, Warrior of Light, Zodiark or Golbez. Tuning numbers YMMV.
Kind of irrelevant? It still doesn't mean you're signing up for ballbusting content simply to progress through mandatory content in the game. Extreme (sorta), Savage, Ultimate, Criterion and Criterion Savage exist for the explicit purposes of challenging people.
I'm not saying make stuff too much harder. But people are able to sleepwalk and be carried through any normal mode content, even at level 90. If someone is in a level 90 dungeon and is unable to understand their basic toolskit there should be some kind of required check in a quest before then to stop them from progressing.
I think people who just started playing are having plenty of difficulty with ShB and EW dungeons, though.

If you're dying you take that as your personal opportunity to learn and improve. One or two morons making constant mistakes shouldn't punish everyone else and force them to start over or spend a whole afternoon clearing an AR. They should be difficult, yes, but competent players should also be able to carry less competent players. That's the solution to low end content. You allow good players to carry bad. That's the difference between normal and savage.
But this means you CAN make normal difficult, because you can count on people to carry.
In WoW you can't do this, because of the combat res limit, LFR needs to be absolutely brain fricking comatose easy with the worse tuning imaginable to account for any possibility of failure and stomp that out so drooling morons that aren't even looking at the screen can clear.

I literally have a friend that is like this. He eats shit in expert and level 90 dungeon roulette and by that I mean he dies every other mechanic or lives with 5 vuln stacks. In Barbie EX he was permadead, it got so bad that the healers were refusing to res him and left the group after we wiped. Did I mention that this friend of mine tried to do savage? Imagine dying whenever something happens that's not the boss just sitting there lmao. But still he says the game is EZ.

True. This is why I was hoping they'd just remove caster rezzes, but maybe that would cause a healer strike because it definitely is more stressful when when no one else is helping you rez and you know the run is over if both of the healers die at the same time.
The problem with the "difficulty" argument is that I don't think people know what they don't like about combat, and that difficulty isn't actually their issue. I've done plenty of difficult combat challenges in all manner of game types, and without even stepping foot in a single Savage in this game I can safely say: "yeah, this game gets hard." Even some EX stuff I've done has been a fun challenge, whether it was Current content or legacy MiNE stuff.
But for the vast majority of the playerbase, including me, who is a Certified Gamer™, we're expected to do a lot of relatively low-level content over and over and over regardless of your approach to the game. Need tomestones? Roulette. Specific glams? Specific low-level dungeon queue. Leveling alt-jobs? Roulette or Bozja (which is honestly a great mix-up, but would have the same feeling if it was the main/only thing you were doing.)
The core encounter design and the jobs that informs, as well as wanting to cater to every mouth-breathing frickwit who wants aesthetic job fantasy without any sort of barrier to entry, has created a very dull baseline experience. Unfortunately, the people complaining about "difficulty" give the hugbox defenders and easy strawman they can deflect from the real issues to.
I find it very ironic reading that youtuber's video description sardonically going off about content and perspective manipulation as if he's above it all, when he's contributing to exactly what I've talked about.

From Square's perspective, that doesn't matter because subscription numbers are still record high. There is no incentive to make any great changes. You say this like a threat but honestly I feel an entire new game from the ground up is what's needed since MMOs have an issue with being bloated, overwhelming and stale. There's obviously a major limit to how much we can revamp the current game and there is too much damage to a lot of the mechanics and design because of either outdated philosophy or lack of consistent direction.
I honestly think the CB3 needs to reorient around what they found to work well in the game and implement those from the onset, with the added understanding of what a 10 year long project looks like this would help forecast a lot of issues they ran into a long the way with balance, parity and bloat.
I'm very much of the opinion that unless they can do something amazing, again, like they did with A Realm Reborn that XIV is in borrowed time until they can conceptualize the replacement.
It's not a threat, a new platform and fresh start is sorely needed.
MMOs are a dead genre. Their entire gimmick was "look at how many people are in one place". That was impressive in the 2000s, not so much anymore. Every fricking multiplayer game is capable of supporting well over 20 people now. Worse yet, most of their content now involves less than 10 players. Why do we keep calling them massively multiplayer?
The only people still playing MMOs are sunk cost addicts. You can see this in action by how fervently they tribalistically defend their own games in every fricking thread. The literal existence of rival games is an offense to them. You have to fight tooth and nail to get them to give up the decade+ of accumulated pixels to start over, or hope the rival shoots themselves in the foot bigtime - and even then you're probably not even making a dent in their population.
Oh, FFXVII is definitely going to be the next MMO.
And I'm 100% sure it'll be even more homogenized, casualized, and watered-down than XIV. Probably bordering on being an idle game.

Early access isn't really "early access." For most people, it's just the actual release date, as you don't have to pay an extra for it. It's just promotional speak, probably enforced by Square.
And the graphical update, while it hits with Dawntrail, is independent from it, as it affects every zone and every character (not yet all gear though). It's being pushed alongside everything else and will apply to everyone regardless of what version of XIV they're playing.

And it achieved stuff just fine.
Got the First involved again, as well as put Zeromus in Ryne's care. Working on a way to fix the Thirteenth and also learn about what caused it to get so fricked in the first place and what Igeyorhm did to screw the pooch.
Stormblood's patches were way the frick worse on content, but 95% of the current playerbase wasn't there for it, so they get it all consolidated into a few hours without the agonizing seasonal wait in between the most boring political garbage imaginable and watching princess braindamage do nothing until turning into a primal with zero story consequence just to get her off the screen permanently. The 6.x patches will be the same thing, only remembered for being shit by the people who played it at the time, forever "not that bad" for future players who will just breeze through it all at once.
oh, the post-MSQ stuff comes in waves? that explains all the "I'm so glad you're back, I have many recent developments to share with you" dialogues whenever I hand in a quest and accept a new one without moving a single step
You should have noticed much earlier considering you get an achievement when you complete the MSQ for a given patch.
I was mostly focused on just grinding out the MSQ and I never really paid attention to the achievements, but you right.

You got me there. As someone who came in after all the Stormblood patches were done, I keenly remember disliking 4.0 but being pretty fond of 4.x (beyond 4.1)
But thinking about it, having a big chasm of time between each patch definitely would have soured it for me.
I did already think people's opinions on 6.x would mellow if not lean towards the outright positive upon being able to go through the MSQ in one go, though. There is still a story there to follow, it just kind of had a very deep scar running through the middle in the form of half of 6.3 feeling like filler and half of 6.4 feeling like filler.
It had to be patch MSQ, Trial series and future new player experience. The latter especially mired it all down, instead of delving into the void, estinien and Y'shtola did all the work in the background and you had to introduce Zero (and the new player) to the cast.
It's the first time I will skip cutscenes in the MSQ, I don't care about the furry hokage.
I better be able to call her a fricking moron every time I'm allowed to pick a dialogue option.

I've been in wait-and-see mode with the new story, it will either be decent or suck shit, but I don't want to judge it before experiencing it. I'm definitely on the more pessimistic side though, because they clearly shifted gears just this past year and it's not a good sign. Yoshida originally said that 6.5 would introduce events that kick off the new ten year story arc, but that didn't happen at all, and he has completely stopped talking about "the next ten years" altogether. Then most recently he specifically mentioned that he's working on the 8.0 story, which suggests that things aren't planned as far ahead as they used to be. This, combined with how he has implied 8.0 will be a launching point for combat and job rebalancing, suggests that Dawntrail is more of a filler expansion than anything and the real shit that was supposed to be starting now won't be happening until 8.0. My concern is that by then it will be too late.

It's likely that the story of dawntrail was already written years ago to be used as a self-contained story given how the weapons we just saw in the trailer leaked in 2016. They probably just rewrote part of it to fit with the current canon, most likely the end to give an idea to where we're headed.

Some people really think more buttons = good gameplay. I genuinely don't understand how the dev team can say that this reduces it though.
I think the best thing is fewer buttons but more flexibility in usage.

On the bright side, you can experience the stuff with the updated graphics. The only reason to care about rushing to the current "endgame" is if you're doing the savage raids day 1 and expect to clear first week. Even then, savage raids are a month after launch.

I still think trials like Zodiark, Hydaelyn, Endsinger, Barbariccia, Golbez and Zeromus are perfectly serviceable normals. Personally, I'd also include Rubicante, but of all of the EW trials, he sticks out as the most... Easy, I guess? Laid-back? By the book?
