The entire message of The World Ends With You is "being a pretentious funny doesn't make you cool or interesting." The protagonist goes from being an unlikable butthole to a decent guy over the course of the game's plot. The difference is TWEWY looks cool and is fun to play.

Neku's not unique in that regard until the postgame when you get the secret reports and they tell you that Neku's imagination is high as frick to explain why he can equip any pin during gameplay, but that's literally just a gameplay excuse that doesn't get brought up until he's already gone through his entire arc regardless. Neku's also not the strongest Player EVER, just the strongest Player during the course of the story.

There's something gross about creators trying to brush off criticism when they're making a commercial product to sell to an audience. The difference there is that breaking bad’s characters are still engaging despite being complete bastards. Alex is not. If they made breaking bad a game instead of a show, where it was like some sort of GTA Style or even cooking based game where you make meth, then people would still be drawn to it. Walter starts out as a decent but desperate man who was trying to do get-rich-quick schemes because he thought he was dying of cancer, and it turns out selling drugs are a REALLY fast way to make A LOT of money; the point of the series is that he transforms into a bad person and the viewer is meant to be watching the decline and hoping he turns around
it's a warning tale AGAINST this kind of stuff where we can sympathize with Walter because we saw him be a good person at first and we can understand the desperation that drove him to change (and it didn't pay off for him at all in the end)
YIIK has Alex be a spoiled selfish loser from minute 1 through to the last 5 minutes of the game, where we are suddenly supposed to think he's been redeemed despite not doing anything noble at all; he is a nerdy 20-something who had his mother pay for him to take a fricking useless college course that won't get him a job, then he talks down to EVERYONE as if he's so much better than them
you can make a story about an awful person if you give them a redeeming element, Walter's was that he only ever initially intended to help his family (he wouldn't enjoy the money because he thought he was going to die), Alex has no redeeming qualities, he's just a pretentious c**t

I will say however that Randall is funny and the dialogue was quite snappy, and on top of that it's got a very "early 90's cynicism" appeal that doesn't really mesh well today because things REALLY ARE that bad, as opposed to the 90's where things were quite peachy by comparison

You completely fail to understand what art actually is. Most people do. A painting, novel, piece of music, or even a video game isn’t art. Those are just mediums through which art can be delivered. True art is an alchemical process that distills and transmutes ones’ lived experience and transforms it into a purer, higher form that enriches the lives of those who partake/engage with the work. People assume that just because they made a painting or wrote a story that it is inherently art, which is in no way the case. And the absolute garbage that is produced by the “art world” as a means for israelites and the elite to launder money is the furthest thing from art there could be. The creator of YIIK falls into the former category. He assumes that because he made a quirky, introspective video game that he made art, but he doesn’t know what art is.

Did either of you even read the post? I criticized both. There’s a reason video games can rarely be considered art and it’s because they’re almost always created with the intent of being a product to consume, rather than an experience that enriches your life.
He's dumb shit. An unlikable main character can tank in any media. I'm reading a book series like that right now. A smart author knows that if your mc is a piece of shit your supporting characters need to compensate. Not by being quirky jokes themselves, but by being such rays of sunshine and strength that they make mc's shit his problem, not the game's/movie's/book's.

There's something gross about creators trying to brush off criticism when they're making a commercial product to sell to an audience. I'm not saying you can't make art to be sold, but you have to be considerate of who is buying, even if it's a bunch of mouth breathers or literal children. I'm kind of grateful that I don't see the resentment pop up too often and that people take the L humbly.
I can't think of many times I've seen it in vidya but I've recently seen examples of this in manga. It's uncomfortable to read.

Pretty much every single crime drama. Breaking Bad is one.
The difference there is that breaking bad’s characters are still engaging despite being complete bastards. Alex is not. If they made breaking bad a game instead of a show, where it was like some sort of GTA Style or even cooking based game where you make meth, then people would still be drawn to it. Alex has nothing that makes you want to spend time with him, and nothing that makes you want to engage with t eh story more. He’s the perfect combination of unlikable and unmotivating.
Rule of cool. Evil/Terrible characters are only liked if they are cool. Alex is not, and a glorified man-child whining all game. This character is the worse one I've ever seen. I've read fanfiction write better characters.
I disagree with them needing to be cool. Take zim from invader zim for example. He’s a complete moron bent on destroying the world, but he’s such a colossal frickup it loops back around to being engaging again.
Rule of funny. Same thing. The problem is there's-- and I mean it to every sense of the word-- literally not a single interesting aspect of Alex. None. Null. It's a perfect example to use whenever you want to point out exactly how not to write and or present a character.

Walter starts out as a decent but desperate man who was trying to do get-rich-quick schemes because he thought he was dying of cancer, and it turns out selling drugs are a REALLY fast way to make A LOT of money; the point of the series is that he transforms into a bad person and the viewer is meant to be watching the decline and hoping he turns around
it's a warning tale AGAINST this kind of stuff where we can sympathize with Walter because we saw him be a good person at first and we can understand the desperation that drove him to change (and it didn't pay off for him at all in the end)
YIIK has Alex be a spoiled selfish loser from minute 1 through to the last 5 minutes of the game, where we are suddenly supposed to think he's been redeemed despite not doing anything noble at all; he is a nerdy 20-something who had his mother pay for him to take a fricking useless college course that won't get him a job, then he talks down to EVERYONE as if he's so much better than them
you can make a story about an awful person if you give them a redeeming element, Walter's was that he only ever initially intended to help his family (he wouldn't enjoy the money because he thought he was going to die), Alex has no redeeming qualities, he's just a pretentious c**t

I will say however that Randall is funny and the dialogue was quite snappy, and on top of that it's got a very "early 90's cynicism" appeal that doesn't really mesh well today because things REALLY ARE that bad, as opposed to the 90's where things were quite peachy by comparison

There are many pieces of media with unlikeable main characters, intentionally or not, and many of them are still likeable because of side characters, the MC's development, plot, gameplay, or anything else. Your game is trash my dude.
The key to writing a character that's a terrible person is to still make them somewhat likable, or just really good writing. just look at what it's always Sunny in Philadelphia, or hell i hate to say it, but scott pilgrim vs the world. You can have likable characters or a good product with piece of shit characters.

I find it cool the game has 4 endings, 2 of which as inaccessible.

The cut ending where the protag admits and the robot chick admits they’ve been idiots and will try better after beating the big bad
And the ending that was only shown by possibility one of the devs where they to back in time, stop the big bad before he even starts, and then promises to do and be better moving forward

YIIK's entire battle system is minute long animations with stupid minigames that end up either dealing 3 damage, having the enemies dodge, or your attack randomly ending the encounter immediately
It doesn't matter if enemies in FF7 can't dodge summons: if they take too long and you have to use them multiple times it sucks. And I wasn't talking about YiiK I was talking about the webm.

Not really. Most of the people that talk about it have only seen reviews or Let's Plays of it and therefore haven't been exposed to the actual gameplay, which is its most irredeemably shit aspect.
