My strategy is wait a few months for any patches because I've lost more or less all hope in 3D realms now, and then pirate it for a spin. I remember the very early demos when the game was first announced on realms deep looked and sounded great but was actually pretty unsatisfying to play and the fact that it's been stalled at mixed reviews for the past however many years it's been in EA just isn't very reassuring.
Shame about 3D Realms to be honest.

As far as I can tell, the last update of any kind it got before this 1.0 release was a hotfix patch in November 2022.
