Not the guy you are replying to, but they are literally disbanding the entire DEI thing and attempt to restructure everything under a new name, because of the extremely bad reputation it has, plus because of the Supreme Court decision allowing states to ban it entirely.

Youre free now anon. The company was holding you back. Make the game they never let you make.

If these people had any value what we would be seeing is this massive surge in indie gaming. New studios, new 1 dev projects, just hit after hit as the indie world gets swarmed with new talent. Imagine the masterpieces talented devs could make if they were not chained to these dead end jobs where they are just a cog in a billion dollar project like GTA. If you work for such a company you're a nobody, you will sit at the desk making thousands of game models only for 2 to make it in the game. You're a waste.
Getting them out and having them do their own projects cause the biggest indie game boom we have ever seen. The indie scene should overtake the AAA industry so hard that they will beg these people to come back as AAA games can't compete.

But that's not what happened or will happen, because none of these people had any talent or skill.

            >have to compete with 50k other fired devs making their own indie game
That's why you build up a fan base first. And then you survive by serving this base.
I see indies working for 2 or 3 years on their first game and I imagine these guys are insane. How do you make such a big bet right away?
My reality is different from normal devs, because I make hentai games, but even so, it's a bit comparable, I think. What I did was set aside only 3 fricking months to create my first game. I managed to add about 4 hentai scenes and released a super simple game as an experiment. It was only after I started to see some engagement, people donating money to support me, etc., that I realized I could make a business out of it.
I'd say that at most an indie should spend 6 months on their first game, and that's a lot, in fact, the ideal is 2-3 months. A stupidly simple game with a stupidly small scope can be fun and put you on the radar of people who like your style.

Except they don't do that. They kill whatever they can get their hands on. Cook the good parts over a fire, eat till they are full, discard the rest, then chill out for the rest of the day. Then they do it all over again. Worst thing that happens is they don't kill or gather anything and they don't eat for that day. Sometimes they do a night shift so they can ambush some sleeping monkeys.

Europeans have been clinging on to the debt meme since the 2008 crisis but the US bounced back higher while Europeans are still being held back by their own crisis they had back then.

Europeans simply do not understand how businesses work. Or debt. Kek, I remember in the early 2000s when Europeans were self proclaiming themselves to be the up and coming tech giants because America was too volatile with its business and the war was going to be the final nail in the coffin. European tech never took off.

Correct. Management just wants people to believe that they were less efficient working from home when in reality people were far more productive knowing they didn't even have to get out of their pajamas or waste as much money on gas.

Also corpo bigwigs didn't like that they were renting empty offices so they demanded everyone come back so they look more sophisticated.

In general it feels like companies are getting more hip to the fact that a lot of millennial employees are basically worthless and are not contributing anything, they suck out as much as possible out of the company they're working for, while ruining it for everyone else in their surroundings, especially noticeable with non-socially moronic millennial normies who manage to keep the charade going for long enough to get a nice payday and cause damage before being discovered for the worthless bloodsuckers that they are.

Or perhaps my perspective is skewed because I've noticed a lot of it in my immediate surroundings.

Yes I am assmad over something that has affected me personally.

Yes I am happy to see them getting fired and the people actually generating revenue finally getting their just due.

Company see coming recession -> gamers becoming poorer and poorer -> reduce production -> reduce labor force.-> layoff.

we already saw average working hours drops to covid level and companies are actual kind to a lot of workers compared to pervious cycles because they hold them until the end.

All these fake employments were created because of covid PPP loan. Now we just return to the normal and achieve "soft landing". For tech, there are hiring freeze and layoff per 4 years in 2008/2012/2016/2020 and high salaries for coders are compensation for this risk.

They're just getting rid of the fat they hired over Covid. My cousin worked at an IT consultation but also got laid off, not for underperforming or similar but there simply wasn't enough work to begin with. You can see it in every IT industry at the moment. Unless you were hired before Covid you probably will get laid off.

don't think this will make games "based" again, you still have to go through woke middle men like puplishers as well as platforms as well as payment processors, etc.

I don't think we'll get based games for as long as we depend on big woke platforms. I only know one based game this year which was "The Great Rebellion".

and where are they distributed? Steam, PSN, Xbox, etc. all woke platforms which will remove your games if they see it as a threat. and even if the platforms are "based", the hosts and payment processors will be woke.

When it gets low enough people will have enough space to actually raise families again, they don't want to do that when they're all crammed into tiny boxes. Stop falling for the ~~*capitalists*~~ telling you that infinite population growth is necessary.

So, as long as people have enough space, they raise big and abundant families? Are you sure that's your hypothesis?

Then, based on your hypothesis, Russia should have a booming population. Australia and Canada, too. The USA and China and Brazil should also have skyrocketing fertility rates.

The industry NEEDS a winnowing. It's massive, bloated, and stagnant. It sucks to lose your job, but the thing about artistic/technical jobs is that if you're undeniably talented, you WILL get a job. If you have even a moderate amount of creativity you can crowd-fund a game until you get picked up by a publisher; shit's never been easier.
The industry NEEDS to shrink, not grow, in order for us to get a higher percentage of quality products. The people making the decisions about what gets greenlit or not are so far removed from the industry that it's laughable; they're responsible for the slop-shotgun style of development. It's finally failed enough that the industry is starting to move on from it.

homie, AAA games now take longer to develop than console's lifespan.
The graphics race sucks the soul out of everyone working on assets to have the most fidelity and densest pixels possible.
Chasing ESG scores means every game needs to have tired, "industry approved" tropes such as Bodytype A/B character creators (forget about unique mechanics for men and women separately, because everything is equal so for example in BG3 every character is a pansexual sexfreak who is into your character no matter what a circus abomination you make, since sex/gender does not matter anymore).
They ask you to pay 70$ for a game, justifying it with inflation, but conveniently ignore the fact that day one DLC, season passes and Game as a Service model exist (and it's been proven that a games earns more from the post-launch support than the initial sales).
95% of developers admit they want to make a live service game, without realizing the market can only support few of them as people have limited time.
Creativity is so dead, we now have more remakes than ever.
AAA devs now only make gigantic blockbusters because the indie scene is so fricking saturated that the only way they can be safe from the flood of the shovelware is to make a game so expensive no indie dev could ever hope to make it or compete on the marketing field.

And people wonder why industry is going to shit? It's going to only get worse.

The first crashes of the gaming industry in the 70s and 80s weren't from layoffs, they were from lack of purchase. People weren't shoving coins in arcade machines, the home consoles of the era were simply not being bought and the games less so. The mass deficit in consumption vs production in 83 was equivalent to like a two billion dollar loss IIRC. 77's loss was specifically due to console quality, 83's was game quality.
I say all this to indicate this isn't a crash. This is a trimming of the fat of unnecessary and unvalued game devs and consequences of failed acquisitions. They're, at worst, tax write-offs. Income is continuing to successfully outpace costs across the board in the industry because the average consumer is a moron who whales for MTX and ad revenue. No crash is gonna happen until people actually stop playing these games, and that simply won't happen. India and China alone are propping it up and unless the Ganges floods and the Three Gorges Dam breaks, there will never be a deficit in income.
I wouldn't get very hopeful for a crash - but if you're business-minded and are willing to take really dumb risks, starting your own vidya dev companies (even if you primarily work in their accounting and finances sector and let the nerds do their creative shit) can get you a surplus of low-income (since they'll look for any work they'll get) recently laid-off experienced devs and start pumping out slop for a guaranteed profit since you can fund the initial projects through software dev venture capital since that shit still exists in ABUNDANCE - plus you'll make western devs suffer a little, and that's based.

The problem with starting a new company is a couple of things
      >A single AAA game dev makes around 80-120k per year. With contract work only it's still a lot, and contract work is mostly stuff anybody can do
      >The average successful game that gets over 1k reviews only makes 100-300k after Steam cut and taxes
      >Mobile game dev is has much more risk to get people addicted, and is facing the same layoffs AAA gaming has
Any vidya company that hires people with good wages to attract good devs instead of trash would have to accept losses and be run off loans like a zombie company to constantly supply itself before death. Most other tech companies are much more viable. Even running a restaurant is more viable.

      Anonymous

Arcades were actually doing just fine in the early 80s, the crash really only applied to home consoles but you're right we won't see something like that again. However, you're wrong about revenue because the game industry is beginning to reach maximum saturation and we are at a point of diminishing returns. AAA as we know it might not survive because budgets are rising but revenue is stagnating.

companies across the whole industry doesn't just fire people when their games are done for shit and giggles, they do it because it makes the books look better and thus the profits are better, hench short term profit, if they were thinking long term they'd keep the people they know work well together because that has proven to speed up development of games, FF7 Rebirth is a prime example of being made faster because the team knew each other and knew they have job security.

You're just using circular logic. Mass layoffs are happening because of short-term profit. How do you know? Because if it wasn't short-term profit, then mass layoffs wouldn't be happening. This is fallacious and doesn't actually answer the question of how to distinguish mass layoffs as the result of short-term profit or long-term loss.

Depends on who runs the company. A company run by white or east asian people more than likely would think about long-term profit - israeli ones don't, and they're now seeing the consequences. Only thing left is to deny them a bailout at all costs.

American companies that do mass layoffs from long term loss, go into bankruptcy

And are they not? Would you say these companies are closer to bankruptcy now than not?

                >When a judge recuses himself
economic system is cruel because it want high efficiency.

For tech, there are hiring freeze and layoff per 4 years in 2008/2012/2016/2020 and high salaries for coders are compensation for this risk.

                >economic system is cruel because it want high efficiency.
Not at all. The prisoner's dilemma says the safest move is to betray your compatriot, but it also says the most profitable move is to trust them. This is the secret to the success of white posterity - they are more highly trusting. But what happens when a highly trusting person encounters a conman? What happens when they encounter a race of conmen? This is why those conmen were expelled from 108+ countries.

Research in Motion, reeling as its BlackBerry takes a beating from the Apple iPhone and assorted Android smartphones, is expected to lay off anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 employees to cut costs and turn around its financial fortunes. While the exact number of layoffs from RIM’s 16,000-plus staff remains to be confirmed, the restructured company appears headed for a high rank on this year’s list of tech industry layoffs.

So what you seem to be implying is that companies are just black boxes and we can never tell when they're actually going through long-term loss or are closer to bankruptcy than not, but at the same time we know just enough to always know - it's short-term profit. How very convenient.

                >How convenient.
No. it is not. it is based on how companies issue debt. For Fed, they controls short-term interest rate as 2Y. to control economic while most companies only issue 4-5y debts for their business. this is why we can see 4y as a cycle.

While the specific details of economic institutions are somewhat important, they can also be highly arbitrary. I believe the essence of economics is behavior. You know companies report profits every 3 months right? Firing people right before a game comes out doesn’t do shit to juice the numbers, all those salaries have been on the books the entire development cycle, if anything paying a bunch of severance all at once makes launch profits look worse

Layoffs are long-term savings being prioritized over short-term costs, there’s a reason that stockholders like it when companies make cuts

Working 9 to 5 to keep your home and be able to eat and then coming home, working on the game and then going to bed until you either release something good that people like or flop hard. And you gotta build a team that can accept such a hail mary approach too, especially for a 3D game. It's a little more complicated, games take too long to make now, which means more hours in development, to say nothing of advertising so your game doesn't get drowned out by the 1000 other things happening right now. A game has to sell astronomically well to offset this, "good game" doesn't cut it.

Who are the people being fired? It's not the programmer, because the company could not continue making games without him. It's not the graphics designer, because the company could not continue making games without him.

It's the non-essentially people who are being fired. It's the gender studies girl who adds nothing to the company, and only drags them down by ensuring that new content is woke. It's the DEI hire who parasitically takes from the company while working to ensure racial justice or some other nonsense. It's the woke weirdo writer who inserts LGBT content into the story.

Good riddance to the lot of them! Learn to code, arseholes! Non-essentials can GTFO!

No, it's mostly customer service type roles. Have fun waiting on hold for an extra hour per call.

        Anonymous

It's really simple. Companies who limit their staff to core essential roles can produce cheap, good, and profitable games at a fraction of the cost, as long as they have not been poisoned by woke ideology. Palworld is a prime example of this.

The companies that are going under here are mostly big bloated AAA game producers with huge budgets, filled with non-essential personnel. Cut out the DEI hires. Cut out the gender weirdos. Cut out the massive PR team. That's the key to success. That's how you make good games on the cheap.

The firing of non-essentials is a necessary correction.

          Anonymous

This. Also, when those doing real game development start to get fired, it usually means the company is about to go bankrupt anyway. Companies that intend to continue producing games rarely ever touch essential staff.
