It was the last time an os was ever released that was genuinely ahead of its time. It was nearly windows 7 but on 2006 hardware. That’s why Microsoft makes sure you can run windows 11 on shit ass netbooks now, because everyone complained.

Just a reminder, Windows 7 is 14 years old, it was released in 2009. Using that nowadays is like using Windows 95 when Windows 7 is available.

Update your OS you fricking autist, it doesn't hurt. You probably use tons of spyware on your PC anyway.

edge is unironically obkectivelly better than google chrome (it removed all of google telemetry to replace it with microsoft's but somehow still has less data collection than chrome, and is faster)
But yeah, ungoogled chromium would be the best.

I used firefox for years after another handful of years using chrome. In my experience, the longer you use a browser, the shittier it gets, specially if you don't wipe clean your OS installation reasonably often. Right now I'm using Chrome with little to no problems, and I expect that to change in a year or so.

Before any Steamdrones come and try to defend this, Valve could easily plaster a massive banner on every Steam client page with "Steam is not officially supported on [INSERT OS HERE], any issues will not be supported." instead of intentionally removing your ability to run software which is perfectly fine.

      Anonymous

they won't because the client is used for financial transactions and they're not going to bother supporting old os and old version of chrome that can be exploited.

      Anonymous

      1) No longer patch Steam for Win 7 or 8. Tell everyone it's "as is," no warranty, computer can get a virus or crash, etc.
      2) Someone finds an exploit in this unpatched Win 7/8 client which easily lets people download, install, and play any game for free.
      3) Have to cut off all Win 7/8 players anyway, or else game companies will pull all their games from Steam.

It effectively "freezes" your steam client to the day to apply the cfg file. You just won't be able to play any games that have hard requirements of windows 10+ that can't be circumvented with the usual github methods.

If you're so mad at modern windows, why not linux? I've seen plenty of games working in the linux thread whenever it pops up. Some madman even got games on his gentoo build.

                Anonymous

Two games that won't work properly, one of them was fixed 100%, and I wasn't even the original poster that wanted it fixed: Marvin's Mittens, a meme game in the linux threads. The other one was the Kingdom Hearts collection from Epic, it could only run by emptying out the entire folder containing cutscenes due to Jap moronation with how video files were played.

GPU driver works on linux. I didn't have to install anything as it was baked into the kernel. Also helps that I'm using a gaming distro that had almost everything useful for gaming packed in it already.

One problem that would really piss anyone off on linux is how Nvidia keeps fricking up their driver updates. Nvidia you will have to install the GPU drivers. I can't remember how many times I've seen Nvidia GPU guys falling back to 525 because 535 is a piece of shit. Makes me glad I'm on AMD.

Wait a sec, are you saying KH3 can now be played easily on the Steam Deck?? cause it wasnt working without some crazy ass workarounds on the Steam Deck just a few months ago...

I ran it through bottles after listening to gentoo anon write about the cutscene problem. Don't know about the Steam Deck, I think the crazy workarounds are the same thing I used to make it work.

Damn, well good for you anon.
Im a Linux noob, i only add the non-steam games to Steam and run them with Proton-GE and around 60-70% of them just werk, but others like FF7R and KH3 or Dragonball Kakarot, Horizon ZD, Monster hunter among some others just dont pop up at all.

And i dont understand jack shit about bottles and Wine and all that mumbo jumbo lol.

Which Monster Hunter? World? Because the Steam version worked ootb. I find pirated non-steam added big title games are very hit-or-miss when it comes to getting them to work while their legit versions just seem to run.

All the games i test are cracked versions yes, I own tons of games on Steam and almost everything works.. but surprisingly around 60-70% cracked non-steam games also work just fine with ProtonGE .. others like MonHun World cracked do not work for whatever reason..

I like to backup my bought games just in case some crap happens to Steam (like what this thread is about) or to my Steam account. Future preservation if you will

Hmmm.. that's interesting, i didnt think about Steamless and Goldberg for Steam Deck and its OS. I admit i never tried those even on Windows but it could be one solution for my backup plans. Thanks

Don't trust me on it, you should test it yourself. I can count the number of games I have with Denuvo in one hand yet I'm pretty sure that's a big obstacle to game preservation without relying on cracks.

Linux comes with a firewall, you have to configure it yourself. Anti-virus is unnecessary, you'll probably be trying to run windows exe files and any viruses in those won't work properly or simply corrupt your wine install which is easily turned over by crudely reinstalling it. You can still get viruses the same way mac os users can get fed malicious .dmg files by being a moron with your downloads.

Remember when people were saying they'd never move from XP and even Vista because 7 was absolute shit for years because of the changes it made with Aero and a bunch of other stuff? But it did. Hell, we had constant threads on Ganker, not to mention Ganker, where people were b***hing about the bloatware, Aero dropping performance compared to the "Slick and clean XP interface", people complaining about the compatibility with older games, people complaining about Microsoft having backdoors even before W8 was a thing, I can't remember if complaints about forcing updates was with 7 or 10 and the same deal was with the shift to the Microsoft Store, and more.

People were constantly b***hing about 7, then 8, then 8.1, then 10, because they didn't want to move on from XP.

I honestly thought they pulled this move years ago, I'm surprised people don't see the writing all over the wall for W7 because MS has been trying to get rid of it for years now by making no new shit compatible at all and same thing is gonna happen to W10 after 12 launches

      Anonymous

People did see the writing on the wall, but 7 is still the best and just werks 99% of the time for everything. The real writing on the wall that 7 users see is that windows will only keep getting worse and worse. It's not about selling users a good OS anymore, it's now about monetizing the users. Microsoft has a massive stranglehold on the OS space, they know it, and they're abusing it to slowly boil the frogs as it feels more and more like you're renting your pc from ms instead of owning it.
Everyone who's laughing who's still on 10 is going to be same position and forced to 11. By 12 there'll likely be no way out of creating an account. More ads will be shown, more data collected, and who knows what else. You already have zero control over updates. And by that point people will be so accustomed to the abuse they'll defend it all the same.

Steam develops a pretty excellent compatibility layer that Just Works most of the time. Use the site protonDB to check for support for your favorite games. The problem is some multiplayer games with anti-cheat rootkits, as well as pirated copies/cracks that are usually windows exclusive.
Honestly, if you value a smooth and non-intrusive computing experience, many linux distros are better than windows at this point. And if you run into an issue, there's a ton of support online.

I use Linux. New IP btw.

About 15% of Steam games run natively on Linux.
Most of the other 85% work anyway because Valve threw money at Wine+DXVK development and integrated those tools into Steam with Proton.
It's clear at this point that Linux can run all kinds of ganes including modern graphics etc. so virtually all instances of games not working on Linux are the fault of game devs, e.g. they use anti-cheat that blocks Linux or they encode their cutscenes in formats requiring codecs that Valve can't ship with Proton, and all games would work going forward if devs stop doing dumb shit.

I don't think you understand how insecure software poses a risk to firewalled machines. It's not going to stop a vulnerable web browser that hasn't been maintained for years from requesting and executing malicious web code because all the firewall does for the average home network is ignore unsolicited inbound connections (i.e. active attacks). Then you potentially have a compromised machine inside your network where it can request whatever the hell it wants from the wider internet and poses a direct threat to everything else on the network.

I'm so fricking glad proton is where it is right now. Not only does KDE Plasma give me a customizable experience I've wanted out of a computer again since fricking windows XP, but I'm just generally happier on linux now that I know a majority of my games "just work" and I don't have that anxiety of microsoft just forcing a shitty update on me. It reminds me of putting custom firmware on my old PSP to make it a better platform than it is if you just simply used regular firmware.

I know this makes a certain group of windows purists very angry for some reason that I'm actually happy with a decision to do something that they don't have to however.

They have no control over what microsoft does to their OS, like, say, moving it over to the cloud, which microsoft has openly stated they want to do. If something is open source and run locally, then they aren't at the whims of microsoft. That's why they do what they do with linux. They should start prepping a chromium alternative too honestly since that's part of the reason 7 won't work anymore, electron is a piece of shit and manifest v3 has some big issues for end users.

        Anonymous

        >They should start prepping a chromium alternative
The reason why almost every web browser is chromium is because developing a browser is an inhuman amount of work. Harder than developing Proton.

          Anonymous

The best time to start attempting it is now, so that in a decade we might be free from google's bullshit.

If you told me 10 years ago that I'd be able to play any game I wanted on linux minus those with anticheat that isn't enabled (which I don't play on windows anyway) then I'd have said that was impossible too. Look where we are. I hated linux back in 2013, now I think it's legitimately better than windows.

            Anonymous

Yeah but why would Valve do it? Proton is part of their core business, but becoming a browser company would be a massive pivot. Even Mozilla, who's entire job is browsers, can't figure out a way to monetize them, so I don't see Valve cracking that one. It would be easier for them to port the whole store and community to something like QtQuick.

              Anonymous

              >Yeah but why would Valve do it?
Because steam runs on chromium now. One of the main reasons they have to deprecate windows 7 support is because the latest version of chromium doesn't work on 7. If google just decides they don't want chromium to work on linux anymore, all their work on proton goes to waste.

                >If google just decides they don't want chromium to work on linux anymore, all their work on proton goes to waste.
For what it's worth, this isn't very likely. ChromeOS is Linux, plenty of Google devs use Linux internally, and there are commercial interests in Chromium on Linux other than Valve, like for smart signage and in-vehicle entertainment systems.

Not to mention that both Google and MS are heavily invested into Linux themselves.
Hell, many MS developers use Linux internally cause its easier to work with than their broken ass Windows platforms.
Google and MS need Linux in order to operate.

I remember an "article" from some years ago, that stated a lot of MS developpers used a Mac, because macos is that much better than windows for development, and the managers were not happy about it, so they tried to convince people to switch by giving surfaces for free.

You will still need a harddrive for this for now but in the future hard drivers in general will be obsolete as this can easily be put on memory within your system itself.

It's a funny idea, but no company would ever want to move to that model when the current one lets them offload a lion's share of the energy and performance costs to the customer.
A Cloud OS means Microsoft has to buy millions of $2000 rigs, instead of the current system where the public will buy those $2000 rigs themselves.

Nah, they will buy a ton of shitty rigs that can run a bunch of virtual desktops at shitty performance. You will pay for this on a monthly base because no other option exists anymore.

Despite all the shilling about how it's different and easier now, Linux is still garbage so anyone who doesn't want to switch to newer Windows will have the same issues with Linux on top of a whole heap of garbage that comes with everything being made for Windows.

GE has done a decent job keeping nobara noob-friendly, but if you do things like download shit off github you're probably still gonna need to do some google searching at some point as you will find that most linux guides online cater to ubuntu and arch users.
it does set up a whole ton of useful stuff out of the box and does have a good guide on startup for misc. stuff you might want to install.

As with every linux distro, you'll be presented with a list of challenges unique to you and you alone, but Nobara is likely the easiest way to get your foot in the door right now.
It will auto install your codecs and graphics card drivers but there will always be a couple snags included with that. For example: The Nvidea drivers included only worked with 900 series or newer cards. Installing Nobara on a 700 series card will result in massive headaches. ask me how I know. Another thing is that browser hardware acceleration will not work out of the box and appears to conflict with the codecs they provide.

          >It will auto install your codecs and graphics card drivers
oh that sounds very nice. I'll make sure to keep a link to a download for this distro somewhere for the future when i scrape enough for a new PC, thanks anons

If you do plan to build around linux, keep in mind that Wayland, despite being standard in RedHat distros for almost 8 years now, still refuses to play nice with Nvidea. You will eliminate half of your inevitable issues by going with an AMD card.

To be fair, novideo are massive dicks for dropping support for Kepler despite its Vulkan capability. Even if you install the legacy drivers you won't get Vulkan 1.3 which means no modern DXVK for you.

Last time I gave linux a serious shot my entire desktop was locked at 60hz because I have a 60hz secondary monitor, making my computer feel like shit. After a day and a half of troubleshooting, the conclusion was that there is no fix for it.
Linux is a meme for people who have a troubleshooting fetish. There's not even the excuse of needing it for dev workflow because you can just use WSL.

wayland didn't work at all and at that point I didn't feel like troubleshooting anymore and just went back to windows.
It's always something. The time before that I had an issue where the desktop would take 3-5 minutes to load. Before that my ethernet adapter wouldn't get detected about half the reboots.

People really should stop falling for these meme "distros" that are essentially just a couple of tweaks applied in advance. It's like if people were distributing a dozen different Windows .isos all with a different debloating script that runs during installation and then calling it their own version of Windows.

No longer works with 22H2. You are now required to have an internet connection before you can proceed with set up.
To get the pre-22H2 setup you need to open a command promt and type OOBEBYPASSNRO. It will then reboot into the old version.
        post hand.

Just a reminder, Windows 7 is 14 years old, it was released in 2009. Using that nowadays is like using Windows 95 when Windows 7 is available.

Update your OS you fricking autist, it doesn't hurt. You probably use tons of spyware on your PC anyway.

                >Bro just sell your soul to MS and worship Gates bro.
That shit pissed me off and was one of the big reasons I switched over.
Yeah Winaerotweaker exists but I learned of it when I already had linux. Troubleshooting is preferable than using MS and even then I had to do bunch of troubleshooting on MS.

                >You probably already use spyware bro so just get more spyware bro.
Yeah, unironically. It all gets routed to the same two companies anyway. For example, what's the point of using a spyware free browser if Microsoft already collects tons of your browsing data and data about basically any other thing you do on your PC? Just fricking use Edge and Bing at this point.

If you genuinely give a shit about privacy, stop using half measures, use Linux and avoid spyware like Google or basically 80% of software that exists. But that would be too hard right?

                >Yeah, unironically. It all gets routed to the same two companies anyway.

The only way I could set it up without adding an account/mobile number was to not give installed internet access. And even after the install it would still beg for those shits once the pc got internet connection. It only stopped doing so after winaerotweaker was used to disable it.

Also unlike some morons I wouldnt just completely ditch the OS because I dont like change.

MS account is more secure, doe. You can do PIN/fingerprint/picture entry, which only works locally, so if by some weird chance you get a keylogger, your system password won't be compromised.

Actual question to people who still use Windows 7, what the frick do you do on your PC's aside from browsing the internet? Half of new software doesn't even fricking work or barely does, do you even get GPU driver updates?

Do you work on your PC's?

inferior as in, if companies still supported 7, there would be no reason whatsoever to migrate. you are basically admitting that the only reason to move is because you're forced to for artificial compatibility reasons.

          >Actual question to people who still use Windows 7, what the frick do you do on your PC's aside from browsing the internet?
AMP stack test server / webapp development
          Native app development
          photo/video processing
          spreadsheets
          streaming

piracy without ms looking over my shoulder

          >Half of new software doesn't even fricking work or barely does, do you even get GPU driver updates?
fun fact: GPU updates don't really do anything unless they were buggy to begin with. it's a placebo just like your OS updates. the only new software that doesn't work on 7 are games, and most of the new ones are shit. if i really want to play one i can get a PS5, but i'm old enough that i don't give a shit about fomo

          >Do you work on your PC's?
see above, i graduated with a bachelor's in CS. i also still have a 16:10 monitor, because i didn't believe the 16:9 hype, and i was right about that too. most games actually support 16:10 just fine unless the devs are little b***hes that force black bars to make it 16:9 to "balance" it for the suckers who actually bought into a shitty aspect ratio designed for blu-ray players. god you people are so dumb, i wish you had the IQ to understand computers.

I don't even have to explain why it's moronic because you already admitted that new games don't work. spoiler: it's because of the API extensions that are in the driver updates. You fricking moron.

Cascading effect. Won't happen immediately, will be gradual. And arguably already happened.
Also I and most people never did the surveys.
Third worlders with outdated pcs will also get dropped.

          Anonymous

The cascading effect already happened. Linux has individually surpassed OSX and Windows 7+64 bit+8.1 combined.

As for not doing surveys, this logic was also applied to Linux yet here it is climbing the chart.

          Anonymous

The cascading effect will be the result of multiple factors.
Disagree with the linux and survey likelihood though, I don't see a connection.
People migrate to linux because they no longer feel worth it to pay for official windows+the win7/8 time running out, but a subset of the people on win7/8 won't migrate or update, they'll just stop using steam, as it becomes less convenient.

By cascading effect I mean people will find fewer reasons to game at all when it becomes more prohibitive. People migrating to linux might stop buying games when they discover performance isn't as optimal which will be another discouraging factor.

Overall a dumb decision by nuValve.

                >No one is upgrading hardware to support more demanding software in this economy.
people are upgrading hardware regardless to play new games. The average steam user has a 6 core and an rtx 3060. Windows 10 isn't demanding either, any CPU in the last 12 years will work just fine.
If you buy any CPU made from ~2016 onwards you can't even install windows 7 if you wanted to without some silly workarounds.
                >Steam's rise occurred during windows 7.
And yet, now it's less than 2% of the userbase. Even if that entire 2% of people never touch a videogame again as a direct result of this, it will have no effect on steam at large.

no, they should drop it because supporting it is a waste of time and money. There is no reason to support something so few people use and that has a direct successor.

The whole reason w7/8 is being dropped is because of a chromium requirement. It doesn't matter if steam had chromium before, it didn't have such a requirement then.
Again old valve would have dropped it's chromium dependency once it had this new requirement instead of offloading the problem to the userbase.

Nail in the coffin. Not the final nail, but all of a sudden other clients are looking less bad.

And I guess they should just never update the client in any way so that people using ancient software who refuse to update for no particular reason can use it?
            >Nail in the coffin.
Why do you keep saying this? It's less than 2%. Nobody cares. This will affect virtually no one other than a couple autists who refuse to upgrade their systems.

Duh. The process of distributing games relies on some of the oldest technology ever that even ancient computers could perform - downloading files off the internet and installing them onto the hard disk. It's about as complex as a wget and less complex than ffmpeg which runs on even older software.
It's basic brainless function. The only reason they're updating the requirements is because of superficial auxiliary bloat - their store somehow needs chromium to dispay their fancy images to advertise games, which is a bullshit corporate reason, you know it, I know it.
              Nail in the coffin.

steam is more than just a client to download game files though, whether you like it or not.
                >Nail in the coffin.
I would really love to hear your schizo explanation how losing 2% of your userbase (worst case scenario) will affect steam in any way at all.

                >omg it takes so much tech to download gifs to advertise games and run a payment platform older than sin
                Nah I reject your premise.

if you ask the average steam user what they like about steam their answer won't be "it lets me download my games", because the client is more than that.
are you genuinely incapable of understanding that new features require newer technologies?

                >because the client is more than that.
No one for a minute is fooled by all the bloated fluff that steam has added to the client over the years, least of all the average steam user (private profile, doesn't use any of the community/social shit). They use steam for pure utility and convenience (which this update is an attack on).

The people with elaborate tranime profiles and long walls of text are the vast minority.

that is very far from the average steam user. You're completely disconnected from reality.
The average steam user might not have a riced out profile but they absolute do use things like achievements, guides, look at community posts and definitely enjoy having a fancy library view. If you look at reddit, the most normie website in the world you'll se plenty of examples of people posting their customized libraries and getting thousands of upboats because people love that shit, just like they love organizing their physical media on shelves.

If you buy into the idea that that's what makes your platform fundamentally attractive at its core, you will suffer the same fate as countless other businesses.
Never forget what your main service entails.
Let me tell you the people predominantly using all those things you describe are more fickle than the people who support a business for its utility.

lol you're talking like steam is removing the ability to download games and not removing support for an os that 2% of the users use. TWO PERCENT. That's like, two weeks of natural user growth.

No, it isn't. Steam gains like 5x that in a year. It's not an amount you should worry about
