That's to be expected seeing as Russia is behind the western world technologically. The PS2 was the first DVD player for most people in the west, just like how the PS1 was the first CD player for many people in the west. It wasn't until, say 2003 that we started to get really cheap DVD players that it made no sense to get a PS2 just for playing DVDs.
It wasn't usually meant to be the household's only DVD player unless you're talking about REALLY dirt poor families (of which there were a ton who buy Playstations). It was meant to be the "secondary" DVD player for the kids or somewhere else in the house. Instead of buying little Johnny his own player to watch movies when his friends come over, buy him a PS2 and have it serve that function too.

I had 2, bought a second one when the lens of the first one died for the second time, when the lens of the second one died I had a PC strong enough to run pcsx2 so I didn't bother to buy a third one.

I don't think I ever met anyone with a Dreamcast (if you count them as part of the generation), lots of people had a GameCube but they were shit aside from some first party titles, and xboxs were new so people weren't exactly willing to take a risk, I had all 3 but I used my Xbox the most especially after you could get it modded and have all the game installed on it
also keep in mind this is the early 00s where people finally realized Nintendo's are aimed towards children so everyone wanted edgy games which GameCube just didn't really have whether it couldn't run them or Nintendo wouldn't allow them or whatever I don't know

The GC was a meme console for bingbing only as always, the Saturn was much more expensive and got canned in like 3 years anyway, and nobody was buying xbox as their only console, so it didn't have any real competition either

I don't think I ever met anyone with a Dreamcast (if you count them as part of the generation), lots of people had a GameCube but they were shit aside from some first party titles, and xboxs were new so people weren't exactly willing to take a risk, I had all 3 but I used my Xbox the most especially after you could get it modded and have all the game installed on it
also keep in mind this is the early 00s where people finally realized Nintendo's are aimed towards children so everyone wanted edgy games which GameCube just didn't really have whether it couldn't run them or Nintendo wouldn't allow them or whatever I don't know

anyone saying DVD player I disagree unless you were really poor, most people already had DVD players at that time, we weren't rich just average middle class and we had 2 (we did get one free with our tv) but still probably watched VHS more just coz we had more videos and they were cheaper to rent, it was nice having a PS2 in your room though to use as your own DVD player if you also had your own tv

Gray market Imported PS2 slims that couldn't be easily modded to do piracy were sold for very cheap in many SA countries because the retailers realized they made a big mistake.
Gray Market imports were off the books in regional sales but still happened because of big import taxes that were like 60% of selling price.
the original fat PS2 is still worth a pretty penny in places like brazil because of how moldable they are.

DVD Players were double the price of an imported PS2 in Brazil in the early 00s and piracy was already solid because of the PS1 era, but the market for the Playstation died when the 360 came out and Sony decided to officilally release it here and didn't work out obviously.
