      DVD Player

DVD player to boost sales at start of generation
sub 100$ price tag in third world countries to boost sales at the end of the generation.
The fantastic library didn't hurt either, but it's really just the DVD player thing and the ridiculoulsy cheap price that it was by the very end of it's lifespan. Seriously you could pick up the PS2 slims for like 40$, new.

I am from Russia and I say nobody bought PS2 as DVD player. Like literaly nobody . You forget that 3rd world besides low income and desire to cheap out also was slow on adoption of new tech including DVD. What is point of the DVD player if there are no disks? Everywhere around are VHS pirates street stalls and VHS rentals. No DVDs. And everyone already had VHS. Early adopter gets in the situation of the PS3.

No everyone bought PS2 for games. Ear to mouth street talk was playstation games rock. No that Mario shit for toddlers, real games for hardcore players. And you can mod PS2 for piracy easy peasy.

        >And you can mod PS2 for piracy easy peasy.
So wouldn't everyone pirate DVDs too?

          Anonymous

Market for DVD videos was small. Like i said everyone already had VHS players so whom you would be selling DVDs? l33t gamers with PS2 and TV richgays are small portion of market. 90% of buyers come for VHS, so VHSs are sold and rented everywhere. Circle of no buyers therefore no sellers.

DVDs took off when DVD players started to cost pennies and normalgays started to buy them
Also i say in Russia DVD was nearly as big as VHS, Putin started to chug on globohomosexual values and started to stomp on piracy so DVD street stalls piracy died soon after start and everything moved to the internet, unlimited broadband in Russia took off about at this point.

        >I am from Russia and I say nobody bought PS2 as DVD player. Like literaly nobody
That's to be expected seeing as Russia is behind the western world technologically. The PS2 was the first DVD player for most people in the west, just like how the PS1 was the first CD player for many people in the west. It wasn't until, say 2003 that we started to get really cheap DVD players that it made no sense to get a PS2 just for playing DVDs.

It wasn't usually meant to be the household's only DVD player unless you're talking about REALLY dirt poor families (of which there were a ton who buy Playstations). It was meant to be the "secondary" DVD player for the kids or somewhere else in the house. Instead of buying little Johnny his own player to watch movies when his friends come over, buy him a PS2 and have it serve that function too.

DVD player, but also Sony sold the blueprints to a bunch of south american factories and let them print infinity PS2s as long as they got a couple dollars per unit. The ps2 ended the generation at something like 80 million sales and hit 110 million by the time the PS3 actually picked up, and then spent the next decade somehow racking in an additional 40 million sales entirely from third world markets.

If you stop to think for a moment, the PS1 did something much more impressive than the PS2.
The PS1 came out of nowhere and dominated the market against two giants: Nintendo and Sega.
So all the success of the PS2 comes from the PS1... I mean... you can't convince a PS1 owner not to buy a PS2 later. Millions of PS1 owners migrated to the PS2 during that generation
PS2 backwards compatibility was the second main reason I bought it after the mind blowing games released in 2001

I don't think I ever met anyone with a Dreamcast (if you count them as part of the generation), lots of people had a GameCube but they were shit aside from some first party titles, and xboxs were new so people weren't exactly willing to take a risk, I had all 3 but I used my Xbox the most especially after you could get it modded and have all the game installed on it
also keep in mind this is the early 00s where people finally realized Nintendo's are aimed towards children so everyone wanted edgy games which GameCube just didn't really have whether it couldn't run them or Nintendo wouldn't allow them or whatever I don't know

Kids used to literally say "the PS2 is better because it has a dvd player" on the playground.

And it was mainly between them and the xchads because those kids knew they would be seen as the laughing stock on the playground if they owned a GC.

Somewhere in Iraq, buried deep beneath the rubble of a bombed out bunker, lay the remains of a supercomputer made from a great many PS2's

Just look at all those games. Now there's no point in even owning a console, let alone being an idort.

Gray market Imported PS2 slims that couldn't be easily modded to do piracy were sold for very cheap in many SA countries because the retailers realized they made a big mistake.
Gray Market imports were off the books in regional sales but still happened because of big import taxes that were like 60% of selling price.
the original fat PS2 is still worth a pretty penny in places like brazil because of how moldable they are.

DVD Players were double the price of an imported PS2 in Brazil in the early 00s and piracy was already solid because of the PS1 era, but the market for the Playstation died when the 360 came out and Sony decided to officilally release it here and didn't work out obviously.

I refuse to believe dvd players were so expansive in America. Everyone loved the PS2 because you could play PS1 games and the catalog was the best to this day.
