Wonder how the remake will change things. I don't think the action combat of 3 works with what is a relatively constrained setting.

I tried to play it recently but it felt awful, just so so awful. Was I filtered? There are PS2 and even PS1 era games that felt better to control than TW1.

Did you switch to over the shoulder cam? Controls are fine tbh, much better than games that came later like Dragon Age with floaty movement.
Combat system is... different I'll give you that but after about an hour it just clicks and becomes very comfy.

Can't quite remember, I think so. But it was the combat that got me, so I just didn't stick with it enough you think?

          Anonymous

Well combat is basically couple of different rhythm patterns that you need to match with clicking. Then you have couple of different combat style switches depending on who you are fighting, and different swords for different situations (sword for monsters, sword for humans etc). So there is some choices there but combat is largely very simle. The meat and potatoes part is picking a quest, finding a book/note/lore about the monster, figuring out what kind of potion you need for it (on hard mode where alchemy is necessary), crafting the potion and ointments/oils, doing the exploration and preparation. That's what witchering is all about - and largely what the sequels ignore.

World is not too big, everything is sort of close. First chapter is slow and it has a very annoyingly difficult first "boss", but then you get to the city and game opens up. I'd say give it another shot until you are in the city (Vizima) solving quests. Game then becomes sort of medieval murder mystery/sherlock holmes detective mashup. If you are not enjoying it then, you can quit

I didn't get out of the starting keep, but I think I was nearing (or at) the end of it. A grand total of 42 minutes before I spat the dummy. I'll give it another try sometime, thanks.

I want this back. Instead of huge swarthes of big nothing, devs could do a lot of minor areas with a good chunk of things to explore while not taking long minutes going from point A to point B.

            Anonymous

the issue with alchemy is it requires no skill to figure out so it can't ever be rewarding, you just read the text telling you what they're weak to and then essentially turn yourself immortal against the enemy
it removes the challenge and the threat of every monster

You still need to find the recipee/instructions, as well as the ingredients. You need to put in the work in order to be the most prepared. Or you can half-ass it and get your ass kicked. I enjoy the preparation and being methodical even if its a matter of investing time than actual skill. If I want skill I'll play something thats not RPGs.

i bet you were filtered by the prologue and act 1, like so many. the game starts to be really good after that, but a lot of people won't make it there.

I love the look of 2000s PC games so much. Everything looks like shit now. Stupid post-processing effects like DoF, Chromatic Abberation, motion blur, etc. Not to mention that garbage AI upscaling shit.

This past weekend I dug up an old early 2000s game called Chameleon. Its basically slav jank take on Splinter Cell, made in the same engine as Mafia 1 and Hidden and Dangerous 2. Everything looks crisp as frick, it felt like finding a literally hidden gem.

Playing it felt like someone restored a deleted memory I never knew I had. The reason why the game is so obscure was because it never got released abroad in english language (native is Czech), but there is a mod that adds complete english overhaul.

Never heard of it. But wow, that really looks like some lost memory from the early 2000's. Surprising, considering I'm from the post-Soviet shit hole and I've read almost all of the local gaming magazines.

Its a mix of stealth and a slow methodical third person shooter. Plays like a mix of Mafia 1 (movement, camera, gunplay) and Hitman 2 in terms of sneaking around, grabbing enemies from behind, dragging their boddies away from AI patrol paths etc. Combat is lethal and satisfying but you will quick load a lot to get the perfect shot in order to preserve ammo.

Environments and skyboxes are gorgeous. Voice acting is pretty bad but that can be forgiven. It's a pretty good game and I would recommend it if you like the above mentioned games

How is this game for a person who never played it before? Too dated or it's just a matter of adapting?
I'm always curious about it and it's constantly at a dime for an asking price, too.

I was motivated to play it because the witcher 2 was good, the books were good, and I wanted to experience it before w3 came out.

However it was thoroughly enjoyable experience because of the atmosphere.

Worst thing about it is that there are fairly few npc models and they tend to get repeated a lot. For gameplay see here

Amazing story and narrative. If you are afraid to get filtered just play on lowest difficulty. But even with a bit unorthodox combat its the best "get in the witcher shoes" experience with cool prep.

Great (dated) game, that will be absolutely butchered by the TW3 and CP77 mindset and will end up being not as good as either the original nor TW3. We are in CDPR downfall era, enjoy.

I played W1 for the first time around a year ago. It was pretty great except the combat and all the running around.
Then played W2 and, well, the story was still good, but the combat still sucked dick just in a different way. Also the maps were pretty shitty compared to W1.
I have yet to play W3. I don't expect much.

W2 is pretty much one giant corridor ridden with consolitis cancer and terrible nintendoesque color palette that shits all over the heritage of W1. It was also buggy and glitchy to a level of a Bethesda title.

Witcher 3 combat is terrible. You just spam dodge to the left or right then slap a monster in the ass 2-3 times before it does its combo interrupter then repeat until dead. They also made potions brain dead and nerfed any fun OP combos you could do with them.

W3 combat isn't great but 2's had a jank of its own as well.
Don't know about 1's. Maybe it's weird with the clicking stuff but maybe it also works well withing what it proposes itself to be.
